Handwriting Without Tears
We have always used the Handwriting Without Tears (12 years of homeschooling!). It's easy and to the point. Even my son who has some fine motor skills problems likes it. We did delay his learning cursive a couple years, but now he is whizzing through the book!

We love HWT!
My oldest has done every level of HWT, and it's the one book I know I will buy every year when I get curriculum. The teaching method is solid, and there's plenty of practice in the workbook alone. The copywork passages are typically rules of grammar, so this can also double as a Language Arts suppliment in that regard. It's B&W, so if your student likes to color, there's plenty to add color to in these books.
The cursive style is simplified, so it's not as fancy as other programs, but it's still a nice, basic cursive style for kids to learn.

This is a decent handwriting book but not traditional cursive Words are not written with a slant and letters like "r" are written with a flat straight top Also individual letters are not taught with a leading curve Easy to use no prep time needed

This book does not teach the traditional style of cursive that I learned. However, it is useful in my situation, since I work in Japan. They do not use cursive in this country and find it hard to read. When I teach a student this way of writing cursive it is easier for them to write it clearly and neatly. The parents are happy because they can read it.

I am not very fond of the simplified look of the letters or the format of the lines used in this program; my students do not like it, either. But HWT does a good job of giving clear visual instruction to students new to cursive. So, after using this for a less frustrating introduction to the individual letters, we will continue on with A Reason for Handwriting cursive workbooks.

Cursive Handwriting Student Workbook

Cursive Success Student Workbook
BEST ANSWER: The cursive handwriting book is considered 3rd grade or the first book of cursive. It introduces cursive slowly. Where the cursive success book is considered 4th grade or the second book of cursive. It re-introduces cursive letters and moves a little more quickly through the letters and has more words and sentences than the cursive handwriting book.

The pink one introduces cursive. The blue one recaps. Both seem to have many of the same lessons. Success uses slightly smaller letters. I actually used both. Both of my kids started in Handwriting one year. Then the next year we went through Success. It was a nice way to help them remember cursive without going over the exact same book.

Cursive Sucess is a second year of practice in cursive handwriting. The letter formations are reviewed but at a bit faster rate and then there are some paragraphs and other writing exercises :synonyms/antonyms, reports to finish etc. to give the student practice in using the cursive writing for more everyday writing.

"Cursive Handwriting" is an introduction to cursive and shows how to write letters in step by step detail. "Cursive Success" reviews how to write the letters and give additional practice. I recommend using these two books in succession.

Cursive Handwriting is beginning Cursive. Cursive success had more practice and longer sentences and more in depth material for older students. Cursive success is the perfect follow up to cursive handwriting.

However, it is useful in my situation, since I work in Japan. They do not use cursive in this country and find it hard to read. When I teach a student this way of writing cursive it is easier for them to write it clearly and neatly. The parents are happy because they can read it.Jaycie L on Jul 4, 2017Preparing kid for 3rd grade cursive.Mittal P on Jun 28, 2017Was hoping it would help my son with handwriting.Laura A on Jun 22, 2017We like the simplicity of the cursive.Melissa P on May 26, 2017I bought this to introduce my boys to cursive writing (7 and 8). But HWT does a good job of giving clear visual instruction to students new to cursive. So, after using this for a less frustrating introduction to the individual letters, we will continue on with A Reason for Handwriting cursive workbooks.Nora L on Oct 19, 2017This is a great curriculum. The pink one introduces cursive. The blue one recaps. Both seem to have many of the same lessons. Success uses slightly smaller letters. I actually used both. Both of my kids started in Handwriting one year. Then the next year we went through Success. It was a nice way to help them remember cursive without going over the exact same book.- Reply

Cursive Sucess is a second year of practice in cursive handwriting. The letter formations are reviewed but at a bit faster rate and then there are some paragraphs and other writing exercises :synonyms/antonyms, reports to finish etc. to give the student practice in using the cursive writing for more everyday writing.- Reply

"Cursive Handwriting" is an introduction to cursive and shows how to write letters in step by step detail. "Cursive Success" reviews how to write the letters and give additional practice. I recommend using these two books in succession.- Reply

Cursive Handwriting is beginning Cursive. Cursive success had more practice and longer sentences and more in depth material for older students. Cursive success is the perfect follow up to cursive handwriting.- Reply
