This book includes around 50 simple activities that will help students build some background knowledge of Ancient Greece, explore the genre of myths, and learn important vocabulary. Activities can be completed sequentially or individually to supplement a study of Ancient Greece. The activities are broken up into five units: Getting Started with Myths has activities that show students where myths came from and explains the culture of ancient times, Mighty Mount Olympus has activities that teach about the ancient gods, Heroic Heracles offers projects that teach about the legendary hero, Who Started the Trojan War has assignments that teach about the war, and Making Connections gives activities that show how Ancient Greek aspects are present in our world today and how people are still affected by this ancient civilization. Each unit opens with a brief introduction that shares a bit about the ancient culture, and teaching tips are included throughout. A list of materials for each activity is given (often it is just the supplied reproducible worksheet and a pencil), along with step-by-step directions. Sometimes the activity is as simple as reading some text, filling out a worksheet, and discussing answers. All of the activities are fairly easy to complete and require no real outside materials except scissors, glue, and writing utensils. Activities besides simple worksheets include a mock interview with a god or goddess, having students write a myth of their own, creating and playing “It’s Fate” (a simple board game that shows beliefs about the afterlife), a few mapping and charting worksheets, vocabulary worksheets, and more. The activities are designed for classroom use but could easily be used in a homeschool setting. Access to the Internet, a dictionary, and a map of ancient Greece are helpful (and sometimes necessary) to gather information to complete the activities. This is a great resource that will get students thinking beyond the mythology. A light supplement for any ancient Greece study. Black and white reproducible, 80 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel
