You probably gave a small smile at reading the title of this book, perhaps accompanied with a small twinge of guilt at having uttered those same words, or at least something equally ineffective, such as “You just wait till your daddy comes home!” or “You don’t want me to have to come in there!” While it is easy to get upset and absentmindedly spout off phrases like these, they do not encourage a change of heart in children, and a crucial aspect of discipline is missed. The issue of discipline is a much-discussed, controversial topic for Christian (and non-Christian) parents. This book guides mothers through the process of heart-oriented discipline, a method focusing on helping children change their hearts towards God instead of merely making their actions fit your will. Drawing on the wisdom of Ephesians 6:4, the author emphasizes instruction as well as discipline - that is, we are also called to instruct them in the ways of righteousness, which often gets left out of the disciplinary process. The book is written with a personal flair, and it is scripturally based, extremely enjoyable, and often humorous. The author does not pretend to be a perfect mother; she constantly reminds readers that she is teaching from God’s word and not out of her own accomplishments. However modest she may be though, the book is very well written and full of practical, sensible advice for disciplining with a focus on your children’s hearts. Although written directly to other mothers, I believe any parent would benefit from the principles discussed in this book. 155 pgs. - Melissa
