McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers Set (Primer - Sixth Reader)
Over 100 years of educational use and still making a worthwhile contribution to homeschooling! Well-Trained Mind suggests using the McGuffey’s as read aloud material for students starting with the Third Reader after completing phonics instruction. And why not? The introductory material in each reader is an elocution course in and of itself. That’s “elocution” as in “the skill of clear and expressive speech”. To give you an idea of the breadth and scope of the readings in these books, here is a sampling from the Fifth Reader: history - The Battle of Blenheim (Southey), poetry - The Village Blacksmith (Longfellow), character education - Do Not Meddle (unknown), science - The Passenger Pigeon (Audubon), and literature - Squeere’s Method (Dickens). There are delightful period illustrations such as The Fish I Didn’t Catch throughout (albeit sparsely) the books. Don’t be fooled by the “Revised Edition” on the front cover. The revision happened somewhere between the original copyright date of 1879 and the last copyright date of 1920. These hardcover reprints from John Wiley & Sons are authentic. ~ Janice

Ronna M. from Ogden, Utah wrote the following on 11/05/2007:
I have always desired to go back to the day when morals and virtues were taught by the literature children read. These books fulfilled that need. Good old town values, like respecting your elders and appreciating God’s hand in our lives. My children have learned to read while supporting their religious standards without any tone of preaching. These books are set up in a progressive lesson format, with new words and sounds outlined in the beginning and periodic reviews. Each lesson also has adorable pictures to illustrate the stories. My children enjoy their personal time reading to me from their McGuffy’s books. These are the type of books you will want your children to see on your shelf!

I absolutely love these books. My kids read them. They learn words that challenge their vocabulary. The stories have a Godly perspective that teach my children morality. So they learn vocabulary and morality in one setting. It is great. I think these are an absolute must-have for every homeschooler.
Tracy M. from North East, Maryland wrote the following on 11/30/2007:
I love these books. My second grade daughter loves to read them. I enjoy knowing that she is reading a part of history. Not only is she reading but she is also learning vocabulary and spelling in the same lessons. She looks forward to reading them daily. We usually do more than one lesson a day.
