Category Description for Five in a Row:

These literature-based unit study curriculum guides cover social studies and character, language arts, math, science, and art. Literature selections contain positive moral values reflecting Biblical values. Use as a stand-alone curriculum for preschool or supplement with phonics and math for older children. Curriculum is so named because you spend five days in a row (a full week; one day for each subject area) using a particular children's book as the theme. There's plenty of text here as the author provides all the reference material you'll need right in the volumes as background for your studies. Hands-on activities and projects abound and there are plenty to choose from each day, using the literature selections as a springboard. The varying difficulty of the activities makes it easy to use with a range of ages. Very little teacher preparation is required. Once you have the needed literature selection, you can open the book and begin! Each book also includes tips for teaching the curriculum, instructions for creating manipulatives, a topical index, a sample planning sheet with a blank, reproducible lesson plan sheet, literary glossary, story disks, and suggestions for finding the reading books. Volumes 1-3 do not incorporate Biblical content, as this is found in the optional Christian Character & Bible Study Supplement, available separately.

Category Description for Five in a Row Literature Unit Studies:

These literature-based unit study curriculum guides are so named because you spend five days in a row (a full week; one day for each subject area) using a particular children's book as the theme for multiple academic subject areas. Five in a Row (FIAR) Volumes 1-3 cover social studies and character, language arts, math, science, and art through 15-21 children's books. The literature selections, primarily picture books, contain positive moral values reflecting Biblical values. Christian content is not incorporated in Volumes 1-3, but is available separately in a Christian Character & Bible Study Supplement. Five in a Row Vol. 4 is for slightly older students (Grades 2-4) and features fewer books, some of which are stretched to two weeks of lessons. Christian content is included in the Volume 4 guide.

Before Five in a Row takes the same concept, but simplifies it for ages 2-4, with multiple activities provided for each book, but not as structured between days of the week.

Beyond Five in a Row is the next step up (for Grades 3+), and these guides are structured around chapter books. Activities at this level incorporate history, geography, science, language arts and fine arts with Christian Character and Bible content available separately.

Category Description for UNIT STUDIES:

What is a "unit study"? Briefly, it's a thematic or topical approach to teaching as opposed to the traditional by-subject approach. Rather than teach each subject separately, a unit study attempts to integrate many or all subject areas into a unified study - usually centered around a particular subject or event. Obviously History (the study of events) and Science (the study of "things") are well-suited to unit studies, and usually form the "core" around which other subjects are integrated. Subjects like Bible, Geography, Government, English (writing), and Reading/Literature, Music, Home Economics, Life Skills, and Art, are usually easy to integrate around a core topics. Remaining subjects (Math, Phonics, Grammar, Spelling) can be integrated to some extent via related activities. Each, however, has its own "system" (progression of skills, mastery of "rules") which must be followed to some degree. Since one of the additional advantages of a unit study curriculum is the ability to use it with students of varying ages and skill levels, these subjects are generally taught apart from the core curriculum. This may be as simple as assigning pages in a grammar or spelling book, or using a separate "program" for Phonics and Math. Unit studies also tend to be more activity-oriented than the traditional approach, a real boon to kinesthetic learners. Advocates of the unit study approach site studies showing that children learn best when learning is unified rather than fragmented and when learning is more participatory than passive.

I'm a 47 year-old mother of two teenage boys. I didn't know about Five-in-a-Row when my boys were young, but I've fallen in love with its easy, nurturing approach to teaching. I'm buying it now, just for myself. I intend to enjoy perusing the pages of ideas over my morning coffee now and enriching the lives of my grandchildren with these stories and activities in the future..

My research led me to FIAR as a good fit for our family. It's my 1st year homeschooling, I run my own business and I've got 3 kids under 6 so I need a program with minimal teacher prep.

Started using Before Five In A Row and enjoyed it. Used a borrowed Volume 1 guide and still was enjoying it so decided to continue using Five In A Row for the next few years for homeschooling. Gentle, fun curriculum for a young boy.

I was going to get Volume 1 and the Bible volume, but decided to get the starter kit for about $50 more. I looked for used copies and had trouble finding what I was looking for. Now I have the whole set and it will be brand new!

I chose this particular item not only for the value of 3 volumes but the additional Bible Study to complement. Takes the work out of correlating biblical applications on my own and gives me more time to focus on bringing lessons to life with hands on activities/music/etc...

What is the thickness of this book? A few people have complained that it's too bulky to use all the volumes in one book and ended up ordering them all separately instead. Just wondering how thick the book is to gauge whether I think it would annoy me.
A shopper on Oct 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The book is about 1 and 1/4 inch thick. It is a little floppy but with the spiral/coil ring binding, once it's laid out to the page you are teaching, it is easy to use, at least for me. Even when we switch to the couch to read, I just have the book open to the lesson we are discussing and keep it in my lap. With the spiral/coil binding, the book can be folded completely back leaving you with only an 8 1/2 x 11 size book to flip over. It's does not need to be completely laid out. Personal preference I guess. Hope this helps!
Do the volumes correspond with each "school year" such as volume 1 can be used for kindergarten age, volume 2 first grade age, volume 3 second grade age?
A shopper on Mar 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: In my opinion, I think these volumes are interchangeable and best suited for children at least 3yo through early elementary years. They do not correspond to a specific grade level, but they are great for guiding parents on using read-aloud books to have conversations about many subjects. You certainly could use vols 1-3 for years K-3, and tailor the conversations according to your and your children's interest. You could also start using the volumes and skip around the books as you have access to the books or interest in certain ones. It's really so flexible!
So does the cooking book come with this starter kit?
A shopper on Nov 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. It is an add-on item you can purchase.
The title of this starter kit says the Christian character and bible supplement are included, but the description then says those are sold separately. What am I getting in this starter kit? Everything for 3 years besides the books to read??
A shopper on Sep 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello! This product includes vol 1-3 and the "Christian Character Bible Supplement". That supplement is one whole supplement that comes bound in this volume; there are four volumes total in one binding. I have found it helpful to have all of these volumes in one binding rather than purchasing these volumes separately. The "Christian Character Bible Supplement" provides additional discussion material for stories that are covered in volumes 1-3, so you would potentially use that supplement each "year" (we didn't follow a calendar plan but have just followed the material when we are ready to read another book). This guide does NOT include the actual stories to read. YOU WILL HAVE TO FIND THE ACTUAL STORYBOOKS TO READ SEPARATELY. I found most of our books in our local library, and I have ordered others used on Amazon. Some of the story books in this material are out of print, and so if our library doesn't have a copy, we just skip that one since I cannot invest in the books at higher prices.
I am wondering if the books come with this kit or do I need to buy them too?
User on Jan 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The story books for the weekly units do NOT come with this kit. I have had very good luck finding them at my local library though.
I'm just wondering do any of the books come with the start kit or do I have to buy those too?
A shopper on Jan 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello! No, the books do not come with the Starter Kit (which is a pretty expansive resource). I am able to borrow many of the books in this FIAR program from local libraries, and I have bought several used books from online book sellers. A few of the books in the FIAR program are out of print, and without access to them through a library, they might be costly. Because of the number of books covered in this three-volume-plus FIAR kit, I am able to borrow or buy affordable copies of enough books to still get a lot of value out of this curriculum.
So does this come with books or do you have to buy the books seperate?
A shopper on Jan 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I also bought the Vol 1 literature package which contained all the books. Much easier this way for me! I find these living books hard to find at our local libraries.

There’s too much book for the spiral binding it’s on. I know the cover and a few pages are going to get ripped off. These really should be spiraled individually!

Too big and not very usable
I did not really like the three volumes and Christian supplement in one book. There were no markers to show where one volume ended and one started. It was big and bulky. I ended up returning it to get everything separate.

Five in a Row allows you to be creative.
I am new to five in a row but the creativity is awesome. I love looking through Pinterest or Blogs where people show you some of the things they are doing. We have added our own ideas to make the learning fun. My children love to be read to and they enjoy the same books over and over again. We touch all subject matter and love the easy guide. We began in winter so of course we are starting with the "snow" books. the Bible verse is nice also and we like doing a bit of vocabulary as well. Good choice if you like to do your own thing (or not).

This Book is Big!
I love the Five in a Row curriculum, but this book is BIG. I didn't realize when I ordered it that it would be so bulky and unwieldy (especially with the spiral binding). I wish I had bought the individual books instead.

Less Fighting and more Learning
I have just switched to FIAR this year after having used a more structured curriculum for the past 2 years and having my daughter fight against "doing school." It is so much better! While it has been an adjustment for me with it feeling completely different than how I "did school" growing up it is really working for us. She is paying more attention, enjoying it more and I feel like it is bringing us closer rather than pushing us apart. We do supplement it with some other activities and math since she is in second grade but it has really been amazingly different and I have to say I love the depth of the books!

The Five in a Row curriculum has been a huge blessing to our homeschool We are in our second year of using this literature based unit-studies program with 3 children ages 3 1/2 6 and 7 If you love to read great children's books and if you love to ask your children questions as you are reading then this might just be the curriculum for you Each week you choose one story to read for each of the five days and each day you cover a different subject using ideas from the book (social studies language arts science art and math) This curriculum is great for multiple ages for people who want their homeschool to be relationship based and for those who value a gentle approach to homeschool without a lot of paper or busy work The advantage of buying the starter kit vs the individual volumes is that you can then choose stories from volumes 1-3 The stories do not have to be chosen in any particular order so as you plan your year you may decide to spend several weeks reading books that feature animals With the starter kit you would then have the freedom to pick animal books from volume 1 as well as volumes 2 and 3 In the manuals is where you will find all of the wonderful activities that go along with the stories The Christian Character and Bible Study supplement will help you study the Five in a Row stories from a Christian worldview We use the supplement to help us choose our weekly memory verse and having that verse be tied to a wonderful story really helps my kids apply the verse's teaching to their lives One last reason why we love Five in a Row is the encouragement and support available through their online forums where the authors themselves will frequently answer questions and give praise to families for making their homeschools a fun and loving place for children to learn! You can access those forums at wwwfiveinarowcom

We began with Before Five in a Row and LOVED those books! This set is just as TERRIFIC and perhaps a bit more so with the character/Bible attachments as well as the cookbook!!! These books bring life to our home education!!!

We used Five in a Row for our first and second graders together and we had such a great year! It was simple but so effective as we snuggled on the couch each day and soaked in some great children's literature I found it a very good fit for our budding readers and helped instill in them a love of reading
