Category Description for Saxon Math Intermediate Grade 3:

Intermediate 3 can be used in lieu of the traditional Saxon Math 3 and covers the same topics - addition/subtraction facts, fractions, probability, estimating/calculating area, multiplication and division facts, dividing two-digit numbers, multiplying three numbers, arrays, congruent shapes, capacity, polygons, classifying angles, adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers, estimating lengths and distances, etc. There are 110 lessons and 11 "Investigations" which explore math concepts in-depth. Manipulatives are mentioned (but optional), and assessments are written only as opposed to both oral and written in the traditional Saxon Math 3.

Category Description for Math Intermediate (Gr. 3-5):

Now available from the publishers of Saxon is the Math Intermediate Series (their public school line). This textbook-based program offers an alternative for parents who want to stick to Saxon, but want a colorful, hardcover text written to the student, rather than an overwhelming scripted teachers manual there are no teachers manuals in this series.

Intermediate 3 can be used in lieu of the traditional Saxon Math 3 and covers the same topics addition/subtraction facts, fractions, probability, estimating/calculating area, multiplication and division facts, dividing two-digit numbers, multiplying three numbers, arrays, congruent shapes, capacity, polygons, classifying angles, adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers, estimating lengths and distances, etc. There are 110 lessons and 11 "Investigations" which explore math concepts in-depth. Manipulatives are mentioned (but optional), and assessments are written only as opposed to both oral and written in the traditional Saxon Math 3.

Intermediate 4 and 5 can be used instead of Saxon 5/4 and 6/5. These include 120 lessons each, along with 12 "Investigations" in each. Early Finisher Problems found in the Intermediate edition offer enrichment and real-world application. Intermediate 4 includes word problems, elapsed time, inverse operations, multiplying two and three-digit numbers, mixed number and improper fractions, fractions/decimals/percents, geometry and measurement, division with two and three-digit numbers, estimating perimeter/area/volume, probability, etc. Intermediate 5 includes word problems, add/subtract/multiply/divide whole numbers/decimals/fractions/mixed numbers, equivalent fractions, convert between fractions/decimals/percents, estimation, variables/expressions/equations, geometry and measurement, probability, etc. Manipulatives are referenced throughout these levels (unlike 5/4 and 6/5), but they are optional. The same methodology is employed in both the Intermediate and traditional Saxon Homeschool math courses, but Intermediate goes more into detail with the 4-step problem-solving process: 1) understand the problem, 2) devise a plan, 3) carry out the plan, and 4) look back (evaluate).

Homeschool Kits include student text, test book and test answers, solutions manual, and "Power Up" workbook. The "Power up" Workbook (similar to Meeting Book at third grade level) is consumable and offers practice with math facts, mental math, and problem solving. Please note that no answer key for the Power Up Workbook is included. There are also Activity Pages referenced in each student text which are available only as PDF downloads (see our site listings for the Homeschool Kits to download).

Additional materials are available separately Written Practice Workbook, Adaptations Student Workbook, and Student Reference Chart. Adaptations Workbook is now available for each level, which provides an alternative for students with special needs. This consumable workbook contains adapted versions of the practice problems found in the student text, with plenty of space provided for working the problems in the workbook. The adapted problems offer more visual prompts and clues for doing the problems. Written Practice Workbook includes consumable worksheets of the Written Practice Problems found in the text. Student Reference Chart* is intended for easy access to formulas, helpful hints, and other reference tools.

This is a great opportunity for those who love the Saxon Math approach; you can now choose your program at these levels.

*same chart used with both Gr. 4 & 5

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

I like the spiral method of Saxon. I need it to be more student led than me sitting and going over everything. Hoping this meets our needs while still giving the strong basics that Saxon is known for in their programs.
Suzanne L on Apr 26, 2019
My daughter has been working on Grade 3 level math already but forgetting key concepts. I think a spiral review will help her. While looking through Saxon Intermediate 3 it seems to have less focus on addition and subtraction and concentrate more on multiplication and division.

Does this set contain flashcards? We are finishing up with Saxon Math 2, which includes flashcards for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts. Only the book ends with not learning all of the multiplication facts, so I'm wondering if the rest of the multiplication/division fact cards are included in this Saxon Math Intermediate 3 set.

BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 3 Home Study Kit includes flashcards. I'm not sure about Saxon Math Intermediate 3.
Is there not at "teacher manual" to this set?
A shopper on May 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, this edition teaches the student directly in the text. Each lesson begins with a “Power Up”, kind of like a warm up, and then jumps into the “New Concept”, the new teaching for the day. Each new concept includes several examples worked out for the student to see exactly how it works. And then it’s followed up with 4-8 practices of the new concept. All of it (the “New Concept” being taught and fleshed out) is worded very well for the age/grade being taught so my daughter would generally do and understand the complete lesson on her own. After each lesson, I would ask her to tell me what the new concept was to gauge how well she understood it. Half the time, I will come alongside her at the beginning of the lesson and just read through the new concept with her and have her do the practices with me as well, letting her finish up the remainder of the lesson on her own. It’s been no problem not having a teachers manual for it. It’s all in the book! Which means the student is able to go back on their own as well and review a concept they haven’t understood very well. It’s worked very well for us!
Is there a teaching CD-Rom that goes with this curriculum line like there is with the Homestudy line?
A shopper on Dec 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there are Saxon Teacher CD-ROMs for the Math Intermediate 4 and 5 but not for Grade 3.
What is the difference between Saxon Math Intermediate 3 vs Saxon Math 3 Home Study?
A shopper on Mar 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 3 in completely scripted for every Lesson, includes prompting hands on activities and when to use flash cards, graphing, daily calendar. I Saxon Math Intermediate 3 follows the Saxon 5/4 and up model and does not include scripting.
Is the manipulative kit necessary? We are switching from a manipulative intensive program and I am wondering how manipulative intensive this program is. Thank you!
A shopper on May 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My daughter completed this course and only wanted manipulative when it came to division-and we used dried beans. Hope that helps!
Is this the same content as Math 3 of Saxon? we will be finishing Math 3 this year
A shopper on Apr 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The content is about the same, but the format is more similar to the 5/4 and then 6/5 saxon math books. I would use the intermediate 3 book for a student who will be continuing on the saxon math series and who can begin to work through concepts and notebook paper practice. You should be able to jump right in to saxon 5/4 after completing either saxon 3 ir saxon intermediate 3.
I am getting conflicting answer on whether this is Common Core aligned. Is this version aligned with Common Core standards?
User on Jan 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is in line with Common Core standards - but is taught in a way that actually makes sense (compared to what schools in NY state teach anyway). You can find details on the hmhco dot com website (I can't include links in an answer). Then come back here, because Rainbow has the BEST prices and really great shipping!
Is the activity pages link still working? I can't seem to access the PDFs.

As I've been searching, I've found student books dated with the year 2006, 2007, and 2008...what edition year is this set?
Stacy H on Oct 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The set that we carry has its own isbn and a publication date of 2011. However, each of the components - text, solutions manual, Power Up book, and test - have a 2007 publication date.

Saxon Intermediate 3 Math is written to and for the student. The student begins with the daily power up section wich is a review of math facts and concepts taught in previous lessons. The. The students move to the new concepts and has several examples to understand the new concepts. The student has a lesson review to go over the new material that was just learned. Lastly the student completes the workbook practice which is a review of previous lessons and the new concept.
This is a spiral approach . This curriculum also uses manipulatives and is great for kids with multisensory learning. My son is ADHD/ODD and is doing so much better with this curriculum. We did purchase the separate workbook ( which has the same problems is the text book) so that he would not have to copy the problems down on a separate piece of paper.

Great book for Grade 3
I love Saxon math, it’s a fantastic way to determine whether your child has learned the math concepts by doing mixed lesson practice at the end of each lesson. I know I can count on each lesson to challenge my kids memory from all lessons they have worked on from the beginning of the book.

Great math curriculum for kids to do independently
We zoomed through the first 10 chapters our first 2 weeks. It’s simple enough for my kids to tackle without much help, but they’re learning a lot of the basics they’d been missing before we started homeschool. Highly recommend!

Great for an independent math curriculum
My son loves this curriculum. He did lesson 100 today so he is almost done with the book. At the beginning, he did the Power Up workbook but then it got to be too much so we stopped it. He only did the practice problems in the book and there are usually 15-20 of them per lesson. We never ordered the Practice Book because it was never necessary. He does math 3-4 days a week and it's worked out great. This curriculum has a great way of making the student skip count and then eventually memorizing the facts without much effort. I have him do the lesson and then he tells me what he's learned in the lesson and then check his work. The Solutions manual isn't all that great and there are some errors. It tells you to "see student work" so I have to get the book to see what the directions told my student to do. It would be so much easier if the book just wrote "student draws a rectangle 3 in long by 1 in tall" as an example. It's a minor irritation but it does get annoying. We did eventually go back to doing the Power Up Workbook because the drill and mental math sections are fantastic. My child does the Power Up workbook about every 2-3 lessons and that is working out great. I just gave my child a practice test for a standardized test and he got a 100% out of 68 math questions. My child has requested do level 4 next year and we will continue with this series. It is a spiral method of learning so they teach a new concept but the questions also cover everything else your child has learned in the book up to that point. There are tests every 5 lessons and I love that the book lets the student know what chapter a concept was taught in for each practice problem so if they are having trouble, they can easily go to that chapter and look it up. I love that math is an independent subject except for me checking his answers. I highly recommend this solid math curriculum.

Some errors in solution manual
I am very pleased with the Saxon Int. 3 program. It suits my daughter and she is excelling in her studies. I am only a bit disappointed with the solutions manual. There are many errors in the solutions manual. For example, many times the text will list a problem for the student to solve in cents. The solution will list the problem and answer in dollars. Many of the discrepancies are of little consequence and easy to identify. It would just be nice not to have to correct my solutions book so frequently.

Excellent
Saxon math has saved my daughter. I had to pull her out of school and homeschool for various reasons, math was a big one. While she was very behind in math, Saxon does an excellent job at getting her caught up. Although a lot of the information included should have been taught the past two years, Saxon takes their time in re-teaching and building upon knowledge as you go. Complete the power-ups because they help with memorization of facts. Each written practice covers only what has been previously taught in this book this year. Quizes only cover what has been taught in previous chapters this year (and include where they were taught, so you can go back to re-teach if necessary). Someone else stated this kit doesn't include the written practice workbook however this is NOT necessary as the written practice problems are all INCLUDED in the text. Simply make photo copies of text pages, or have your child write their answers and show their work on lined paper. The only thing I sort of wish I had was an actual teacher text, but it's totally doable without it. Go to Saxon's website (hmhco) to find additional links to online resources that go with the text as well. It's not a super organized math program, as there's not a teaching textbook included - but everything you really need is available in this kit, and more if you search online.
