Revised and expanded by My Father's World, this publication builds upon the beloved Emma Serle's Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons, with grade appropriate lessons, additional content, new (col­orful) graphics, and parental teaching support and student lessons, all in one book. While the instruction is not comprehensive, there are helpful teaching directives at the top of numerous lessons which are not self-explanatory. Answers are included in the back of the book.

Mrs. Serle's philosophy of oral and written lessons is evident. Lessons are diverse and include oral (later written) composition, picture study, poetry memorization, copywork, dictation, poetry and literature studies, oral narration, and diction­ary usage. Lessons are interactive and will take approximately 15-20 minutes per day. If you are intimately familiar with Mrs. Serle's work, you may notice the 2nd grade book is the truest to the original, with significant additions to grade 3 and up, including hymn studies, picture studies based upon Biblical events and persons, and literature excerpts. While the books are considered grade level, there is some flexibility available and parents will eas­ily be able to 'tweak' these books for children of close ages or abilities. Since many of these les­sons use classic readings and poetry, they could also be easily adjusted for struggling students, while preserving the child's self-esteem.

Overall, the changes made to this series have only served to improve upon the gentle, exploratory language arts instruction found in Mrs. Serle's classic work. Written activities will require a 3-ring notebook and notebook paper. Also, recommended in for grade 3 and up, is the Merriam-Webster's Elementary Dictionary (#12621). Each book contains 102 lessons. My Father's World updated the covers in 2018, but made no significant text revisions.Currently, our stock is updated to the new covers with bound bindings, except for a couple remaining spiral bound of Level C. ~ Deanne

Is there a teachers book that goes with this? We are jumping in grade 4. 1st time for Father's world. Is that OK?

BEST ANSWER: There is no teacher's manual. Information for the teacher is included in the book. The lessons are intended to be "short, interactive, parent-led," not just handed to the student to complete independently. We've enjoyed the Charlotte Mason approach in this series. I don't think you'd have any trouble starting with this book in grade 4 even if your student hasn't used the books for grades 2 and 3. Just be sure to read the introduction first so you understand how to teach the different types of lessons. You can also contact My Father's World with any questions you have. They are very helpful.

This series is great.
This series is great. It is gentle yet it provides lots of good ideas and the lessons are short yet very enjoyable. Love that it is more Charlotte Mason focused.

Great language arts resource
This book covers so much but in smaller daily pieces, which are really manageable and enjoyable for my fourth grader. The quality of the works used are superb and I like the Christian worldview presented.

Our favorite out of the 5 we've tried in the past 2 years.
It took us a few years to find what we have been looking for in a language arts program. I did not want to bring public school into our home, but still wanted something that I felt was teaching my children thoroughly. This is the first one out of 5 that we seem to be sticking with. Our child is very good at getting her work done, but not understanding what she just did and learning from it. The way this is set up, that seems to take that away and she seems to retain the information.
