I felt the program was a bit too repetitive and dry. I thought the focus on calendar, temperature and money everyday was tedious. We used for a few months but my son, who loves math, did not look forward to the lessons. We ended up going with Beast Academy which seems to be a better fit for him. My daughter is working through Saxon 6/5 and it’s been fine for her. It really depends on the student.

Saxon Math 3
We have not done alot in this course yet, but I love this course. Easy instruction, and your child actually learns something. Easy exercises, and my son can do some of the work on his own.

Saxon Math 3
My daughter will soon be 8. She is technically in 2nd grade but is currently going through this level with a bit of extra help from mom. She is grasping it very well. I'm very happy with this curriculum.

A good choice
We switched from Singapore because my daughter needed extra practice and more review. As someone who often skips the basics, It helps me become a better teacher and go over things that I wouldn't normally do. I do get tired of how long this program takes but it has been exactly what my daughter needed

Works well
This is our first experience with Saxon and it has worked well for us. While the daily lessons introduce perhaps too little new information, we do love the circular nature of the materials. Revisiting topics over and over solidifies the material. We find ourselves doing 2-3 lessons a day and that pace seems appropriate. Recommend without reservation.

Love it
We are in our second year of homeschooling and this is our first year using Saxon. Both kids, 3rd and 2nd grade are using Saxon and love it. So happy to have found it.

I think Saxon Math is a very complete math curriculum but very dry There is lots of review and I think that is really good You want to master the basics before you move on I have 3 boys and I intend to continue to use Saxon Math The oldest will use 5/4 and the middle one will use Grade 2 Even though it is completelike I saidI think it is dry so I plan to mix it up and supplement with Life of Fred and Beast Academy

My son and I absolutely LOVE Saxon Math! My son had been in public school until this year and had been deemed to have a "slight learning disability" in math I ordered Saxon Math 3 and was a little worried because I had heard it was more for advanced children I was worried for nothing! The teacher's manual explains everything in order for you teach your child in a way that actually makes sense! It teaches by association therefore you child is constantly using information from previous lessons in order to learn the new concept! All of the lessons are thoroughly planned out and ready for you to teach All I do is go over the lesson the night before then we're ready to go the next morning The flash cards that come with the program are awesome They are used almost daily and with that repetition comes memorization The manipulatives are surely needed for this program and my son absolutely LOVES "getting" to use them They make the lesson fun! We do use the meeting book especially for the calendar and counting strips but not every day As far as this math being for "advanced" children I feel that AFTER using Saxon then he is and will become even more advanced He enjoys math now because he UNDERSTANDS! My nephew who is in the same grade but in public school is just now learning things that my son learned months ago yet the way he (nephew) is being taught these concepts aren't in a way he'll likely remember them This is an AWESOME program I feel like it teaches in a way that makes sense to the child Honestly had I been taught math in the way that Saxon teaches then I would've actually enjoyed learning I can honestly say I can't imagine using any other program for teaching my son math It is well worth the money! I just wish Saxon would come out with a program for every subject That would make choosing curriculum SO much easier! I HIGHLY recommend Saxon Math!

My Son did Saxon Math 1&2 while home schooled and now that he is in public school, he is asking for Saxon 3. His 2nd grade teacher tells me he is doing 3rd grade math in school currently BUT my son said he is bored and wants to do Saxon math. Go figure!

I teach Special Education and love the Saxon program for my struggling students. It is developmentally paced, spirally progressive, and has ideas for using manipulatives which enhances concrete understanding.

I used Math U See last year for my daughter, and though I love the way concepts are presented, I'm not thrilled with its mastery approach (as opposed to the spiral approach) to math because my daughter seems to be losing some of what she knew. Though Math U See does have review problems from previous years and concepts, it does not review how to do those problems. I'm going to use a mix of both Math U See and Saxon this year, and see if we can find the right rhythm for math for her.

We have been a part of a classical charter curriculum and have seen wonderful awesome results. We are planning to home school and keep the same curriculum because it was so great. My husband grew up with this program as well and is great at math and now a CPA.
Lori T on Jun 28, 2018
After much research and reading review after review, I felt Saxon would be the best fit for my family because, it gives step by step instructions on how to teach your child/children the lesson as well as what to say and it makes it fairly easy for the inexperienced homeschooler, like myself.
shawnique s on Jun 22, 2018
After trying other math curricula for years and failing, I have finally switched to Saxon for good. I believe it is by far the most thorough math curriculum available.

I am a retired math teacher and Saxon is a wonderful math program. The repetition is the best. Each lesson always goes back and reviews lessons previously done. If followed, a student continuing with the Saxon program in elementary school will have an excellent math background. I purchased Saxon 1st grade and Saxon 3rd grade for my granddaughters. My 2nd grade granddaughter will actually be doing the 3rd grade book.

My daughter has had a hard time picking up math concepts at school. I want to use this to teach her in a slower more complete way so that she can understand what is being taught.

In the middle of Math 3 and loving it.
Pamela P on Aug 14, 2017
Well developed program that is cyclical in nature, constantly reviewing concepts already learned throughout the whole year. It does require more input from the parent/teacher, but is a much more thorough program. We have 6 children and have been using it for years. We are both engineers and feel it prepares them best for a STEM future.
Lisa R on Aug 3, 2017
Early Saxon curricula is a superior spiral math product before Houghton-Mifflin got their filthy mits on the higher levels of Saxon Math and changed it to common core, which was the kind of math taught to the serfs of the middle ages to keep them under-educated and poor. History does like to repeat itself.
JILL C on Aug 1, 2017
My son has been doing Saxon math since pre-K. It is the best math curriculum I could find and was the recommended math curriculum by the makers of the Robinson Curriculum. We combine Saxon math with Life of Fred math and my son, who is 7 and just finishing 1st grade is at least a grade level ahead of his peers.
Leah W on Jun 25, 2017
Have used Saxon over the years with older children. Works the best.

is this meant for homeschool children ?
A shopper on Sep 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I used Saxon 3 math 2 years ago. It worked very well for homeschooling my 3rd grader. He did very well in his math scores on CAT for 3 rd grade required for PA. I love teaching with this curriculum. I do remember borrowing some math manipulative from the library. I hope this helps. I have been homeschooling for 20 years and have never considered switching to another math curriculum.
What exactly is in this kit? Does it come with the fact cards?
A shopper on Sep 19, 2017

A shopper on Oct 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 3 is the first edition. There is a newer edition found in the public schools but the homeschool kit is the first edition with an early 90's copyright.
