Overall I like this curriculum very much. They use well known works of literature and authors. The tests, however, disappointed me a little. Every 4-5 weeks the student either takes a vocabulary or literary terms test. While I think those are adequate tests of those areas, there are no tests over the actual works themselves. So, for example, they would test the student over concepts like personification, rhythm, point of view, etc., there is no actual questions over Frankenstein, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, or The Lady of Shalott. At this age most students should be able to work independently, so teacher involvement is somewhat limited. The teacher is needed to check answers and grade tests, but not needed so much for teaching per se. We only used this as a literature curriculum, so the writing assignments and culminating activities were something we never tackled. We did like the curriculum enough to plan on using Write With The Best next year.
