Further Up and Further In
Although this unit study looked interesting, I found it too scattered for us. The topics were all over the place! I wanted something with a little more continuity for my children.

I used this with my fourth grade son who declared that this year was his "best year ever" He learned much more than I expected he would with this study and so did I I found the guide easy to use and the planning took a minimal amount of time It is easy to gather the supplies needed for projects and most of the suggested supplemental books can be found at the library or purchased relatively inexpensively Also the internet can be used when researching more about various topics This study works for visual learners as well as kinesthetic and auditory learners There are many activities from which to choose and the activities fit the range of all learning styles I feel this product is most definitely a good value and I highly recommend it

Further Up and Further In is a full-year curriculum based on the study of The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis It brings together English literature social studies geography Bible and character building cooking and art with a bit of science and history at times However to complete this curriculum parents are strongly advised to supplement with more history math grammar and spelling Specifically aimed for readers of grade 4-8 level Further Up and Further In can easily be adapted for younger children Each book of the Narnia series is covered in this literature study You will find recipes directions for activities other books to read and poems I personally used it with my 2nd grader and he enjoyed the time we spent together reading The Magician Nephew and learning new words I must admit that I too learned interesting things while using Further Up and Further In the past few weeks We took it slowly as we were discovering this together We had discussion about Scriptures and about we had read in the chapter we learned new words and their definition we applied these new words in a different context to make sure we understood them and so on I must admit that I skipped some activities that I found too advanced for a 7 year old but generally speaking we had fun We are both looking forward to continue reading the Narnia books and to learn more new words Too often I find that we dont stop to look at the words when we dont understand it This study helps us to slow down and discover new vocabulary

I purchased the unit study "Further Up and Further In" for two reasons: 1 My child was interested in doing a unit study based on the CS Lewis' series "The Chronicles of Narnia" 2 I am scheduled to teach an enrichment class on "The Chronicles of Narnia" for elementary and Jr/Sr high students"Further Up and Further In" is a unit study with each unit corresponding to one of the books in "The Chronicles of Narnia" series Topics covered in this unit study are: Bible art music cooking English reading health and safety geographical/social studies history and science I think the concept of using the CS Lewis' series is a fantastic idea However after reviewing this curriculum it does have some problematic areas:1 The curriculum has not been updated since it was written 2 A high amount of prep time is required by the teacher The teacher gathers all of the materials needed prior to starting the week This may include searching for library books and planning for each of the subjects taught 3 The description of assignments is vague The instructions are not written precisely as to what you are suppose to be doing I think the concept of this curriculum is a fantastic idea but it needs to be updated and fleshed out
