Category Description for BJU Press Heritage Studies Grade 1:

Updated in 2014, this study begins with Creation and goes through Plymouth. There are eleven chapters – God’s World, Your Family, Your Community, Your State, Your Country, Your Country’s Capital, Native Americans, Christopher Columbus, Jamestown, Plymouth, and Today and Long Ago (contrasts the past and present). The goals of this level are to strengthen knowledge of God and encourage Christian growth, develop an interest in history, geography, citizenship, economics, and culture, present a balanced overview of American Heritage, understand connections between events, organize information chronologically, and build silent and oral reading skills. Students will be engaged with hands-on activities, poetry, artwork, maps, graphs and photos. The Teacher Edition includes the Toolkit CD, which contains Activity Manual Answer Key, teaching visuals, maps, instructional aids, and activities. The Home School Kit includes Student Text, Teacher Edition w/ Toolkit CD, Student Activity Manual, Tests, and Tests Answer Key.

Category Description for BJU Press Heritage Studies:

This complete social studies curriculum assumes a strong Christian worldview that is meaningful and relevant in today’s world. It reflects a conservative evangelical perspective and would be a good choice for many Christians because of its Godly perspective. Heritage Studies uses a narrative approach making the books more interesting and provides a look at how God has interacted with human events to establish His kingdom, and give students an opportunity to study historical figures and events through the lens of God’s Word. In addition to the historical aspect of Heritage Studies, students are invited to evaluate concepts, cultural values, economic issues, and government systems using Scripture. By teaching the past, students become aware of the present and are better able to understand and think critically about issues they will face. Heritage Studies strives to present a balanced view of history and challenges students to think for themselves.

Many of the texts have been updated and revised in recent years. Student Texts are colorful and non-consumable. Teacher Editions are full of resources (these will vary between editions), and usually include reduced student pages, teaching tips, background and supplemental information, and answer keys. Newer editions also include a Toolkit CD, which includes maps, visuals, instructional aids, Activity Manual Answer Keys (in some cases), and more. Activity Manuals include full-color pages to review and enrich lessons. Activity Manual Answer Keys are student activity manual pages with answers filled in – in some cases the Activity Manual answers are found in the teacher edition for that level.  Tests are non-reproducible and come in a packet with one test per chapter; Tests Answer Keys are student tests with the answers filled in. A Visuals Packet is available for grade 1 (optional) and includes a timeline, maps, pictures, interactive figures, and full-color charts. Home School Kits include the required materials for teaching Heritage Studies at each grade level, and usually includes a Student Text, Teacher Edition, Activity Manual, Activity Manual Answer Key (where needed), Tests, and Tests Answer Keys.

We really enjoy BJU history... the kids love how the Bible is incorporated into their lessons. The lessons are colorful and thorough - they really have learned a lot through all of the elementary grades.

It looks easy for my first grader to comprehend and it doesn't appear to be extremely time consuming.

1st grade activities seem too easy to me
My biggest complaint about first grade (other grades are not this way) is that the worksheets and the tests are entirely way too easy! I consider them K level, not 1st grade. Some worksheets were okay, but most did not enrich the lessons or provide much help to my student retaining information we had read and studied. If I had to do it again, I would just stick with the text and teacher's manual for this for 1st grade.
