Beginning in grade 2, Bob Jones offers a complete English program at all levels to train students to communicate effectively. Both oral and written skills are developed, with increasing emphasis on composition at the upper levels. Everything that you would expect in an English program is here from mechanics, to word types, grammar (including parts of speech and diagramming), and all types and forms of writing - including analysis and composition. As with all Bob Jones materials, the course integrates Christian themes and references. Teacher's Editions contain daily lesson plans and answers to the student worktext exercises. Student worktexts are consumable and are centered on different themes at each grade level. Testpacks are made up of ready-to-use tests for each chapter, and answers to these are found in the Testpack Key. Brief overviews of skills by grade level are below. Required materials are listed first, followed by asterisked (*) items that are considered optional. Supplemental materials used at multiple grade levels are listed after the grade-level listings. Home School Kits contain Teacher's Edition, Worktext and test material at a lower price.

I have used McRuffy and BJU and really like them. I already had one kid do these, and therefore, and just following from positive past experiences. I recommend McRuffy most because it seems the most fun.

Accompanies the Bob Jones English 3 homeschool series that we are doing this coming year. I like how they do a part of speech/grammar in one unit, and then move to a writing unit the next unit. It helps break it up a little and keep it interesting. Many other curriculums do grammar first and all of it, and then writing second and all types of writing. My kids get burned out doing that.

BEST ANSWER: It is published by a Christian publisher, so it has contents related to Christianity and Bible. But it is not a religious book that preaches to you. We like it as it is gentle, thorough and also rigorous.

Didn't Work For Us...
I really wanted to like this program, but it didn't fit the learning style of my student. We switched to another english and writing program that was a better fit. In general, I will say BJU produces high quality materials. The worksheets are all in color, which is enticing for students. Nothing wrong with the program... just not a fit for us.

Easy to Learn Grammar
I do enjoy these English book series. I've started from English 2 all the up. My last child who doesn't like English doesn't seem to mind doing this. It is plain and simple to understand, I'm learning right along with him. English wasn't one of my favorite subjects either. I would recommend this to anyone who has a child that doesn't like English and to refresh your memory as well.

My daughter and I just completed Bob Jones English Grade 3 this past week I have used Bob Jones in the past and I am very pleased with their elementary English books The books lay a solid foundation for Grammar without overkill that would smother the fun of learning The text addresses mechanics the parts of speech as well as including quite a bit of writing practice as well In fact the writing portion is one of my favorite parts of Bob Jones EnglishEvery other chapter is a composition chapter In the Grade 3 book my daughter learned how to write a letter a persuasive essay fictional story a book report a poem a short research report and a compare/contrast essay The text shows the student step by step how to think of ideas and get them on paper Lots of planning diagrams are included to help with the process There are sixteen chapters in the book with each chapter taking about a month to complete Each page has an instructional teaching box at the top and some practice exercises at the bottom One is to teach the concept to the child and help them complete the exercises together at the bottom of the page Then the child is expected to complete the exercises on the back of the page on their own If additional practice is needed the teacher's manual includes a CD-ROM with extra practice pages on it The teacher's manual is an essential part to this program in my opinion It includes reduced copies of the student workbook (with the answers written in) with the teaching instructions and suggestions in the margins of the page The CD-ROM is quite helpful Instead of buying the separate test and quizzes packet I print tests and quizzes from this CD Grammatically the book covers capitalization and punctuation most of the parts of speech diagramming some easy sentences types of sentences subject verb agreement contractions and research skills (dictionary encyclopedia and thesaurus)I am very pleased with my purchase of Bob Jones English 3 and plan to use it again next year for my daughter's fourth grade year It is definitely worth the money
