Description

On April 14, 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sunk two hours and forty minutes later. In this story, the reader is aboard the Titanic and learns facts about the Titanic from the viewpoints of three types of passengers. Readers can choose to immerse themselves in the book as a passenger, crewmember or stowaway with the goal of escaping the Titanic. There are choices to make along the way and options to take a different route with more choices if they are not successful at first. Along the way, the reader learns what it was like aboard the boat between the time after it hit the iceberg and the ship sunk. For instance, there were a limited number of lifeboats and in their panic, many people left the ship before these lifeboats were even full. Alternatively, they learn about how being brave, helping others and making calm decisions can end in a better result. During the adventure, the reader runs into J. Bruce Ismay, who was the Manager of the White Star ship line to which the Titanic belonged. The book reveals that his decision-making contributed to there not being enough lifeboats on the ship because he felt more lifeboats would just clutter up the ship. Another challenge in trying to help others escape is the fact that there were people on the ship from all different countries, so there was a language barrier. Although based on a fictional narrative, this reader is packed with activities ranging from folding, cutting and drawing, to playing word challenges. This book really helps the reader learn more about what it takes to manage a ship, feed and communicate with the people aboard, as well as how to make better decisions when faced with challenges.
