Reviews Grade 1 concepts and teaches through reading, writing, and comparing numbers to 1000; adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers; solving addition and subtraction word problems; time, money, and length; reading graphs, 2D and 3D shapes, and simple fractions. Requires household or easily found items and the following manipulatives: base 10 blocks, 50 small counters, coins, play money, clock with hands, 1 ft (30 cm) ruler, 2 packages of playing cards, and six-sided dice (2). A manipulative kit is available for your convenience. While no placement test is available, the second grade Math with Confidence is designed for students who are 7 years or older, can count to 100 by 1s, 2s,5s and 10s; understand tens-place and ones-place in 2-digit numbers, write simple addition and subtraction equations and solve simple word problems with single-digit numbers, know most addition facts up to 9+9, know most subtraction facts up to 10; know the names and values of coins and identify combinations of a few coins. This is reviewed at the beginning of the Grade 2 text, but assumes the student is familiar with the information.

Category Description for Math with Confidence:

Are you looking for a “Goldilocks” math curriculum? You know, the one that is not too hard, not too easy, but just right. Math with Confidence may pass the Goldilocks test for your child! Not only does it provide the right level of challenge for most children, but it also passes the Goldilocks test for parents with well defined goals, sequenced lessons, open and go scripted lessons, and easy to implement activities. The curriculum focuses on mastery with topical units and spiral review. Currently four levels are completed (K-3), with Grades 4 through 6 expected by 2026. The Instructor Guide and Student Workbook(s) are required to successfully teach the course.

Instructor Guides begin with introductory information and a helpful “how to use” section which gives parents the tools to confidently teach math. Scripted lessons for the teacher and easy to implement activities that use household items, along with a few common math manipulatives, the Instructor Guide equips parents to be successful. From Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, there are four teaching days and one optional enrichment or review day, for a total of 32 weeks. Weekly lessons have the same format: Overview of the week, lesson notes, and materials list for activities. Each lesson includes interactive teaching time and independent workbook time. The amount of time spent on each lesson will vary depending on the grade level. Kindergarten lessons will take about 15-20 minutes with First Grade requiring 20-25 minutes. Second Grade takes 20-30 minutes. Enrichment or review activities focus on games/activities or a suggested read aloud math book of the week. Beginning in Grade 3, the lessons have been grouped into units rather than weeks to provide more schedule flexibility. There are 16 units (128 regular lessons) in Grade 3, and each unit concludes with an optional enrichment activity and suggested picture book to read together. Lessons will take 25-35 minutes per day. Instructor Guides also include Answer Keys and Blackline master’s which are reproducible for your immediate family.

Colorful, consumable Student Workbooks provide independent daily work. In Grade 3, the Student Workbook is divided into 2 parts: Part A covering Units 1-8 and Part B Units 9-16. The Student Workbooks are reproducible for immediate family members, although the publisher has made great effort to keep the student workbooks affordable for families.

Sets are available that include the teacher and student books. Manipulative Kits are also available for your convenience.

Want to move into level 3. Wondering if any children didn’t get the double digit mental math down and or have all facts memorized? If so, are you planning to move forward with the third level.

BEST ANSWER: We're moving forward with the 3rd level even though we didn't finish the 2nd grade one. The reasoning is that math with confidence does a really nice recap, which helps ease into the next levels and can fill in gaps or provide more practice where needed. That being said, if your child is struggling with half of the content or more, I would think about some kind of practice program between levels. Hope this helps!
Could this be used as review over the summer without the teacher volume? We're almost finished with MUS Beta.
Beth on Apr 24, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I think the workbook alone could be good review for a lot of the topics covered in that level. A lot at the beginning would probably be very, or even too simple though. You don’t need the teacher guide in order to use the workbook, but if you need an answer key it is in the teacher guide. If you’re looking for more of the math games vs. workbooks the same author has another “facts that stick” series that uses many of the same games but in a more concise book. That is meant for summer review or just focused practice.
