Description

Introduce your children to God's natural world around them with this hands-on exploration into God's creation. Interactively written in a child-friendly narrative, the first half of the book is well illustrated with splashes of color, photographs, and lively cartoonish illustrations. Designed to spark curiosity, the program focuses on simple exposure to the science that is found all around us. Topics include creation, planet earth, solar system, botany, zoology, our five senses and anatomy, motion and energy, gravity and buoyancy, sound and light, and more. The approach is a gentle introduction rather than a ‘deep dive' that encourages little ones to observe the world around them. Unlike other programs, the activities are not inserted into the readings which allows for a natural reading flow perfect for the child who wants “just one more page.". As you read together, icons direct the parent to the activities found in the second half of the book or Parent Guide.

The Parent Guide provides introductory information about the program and how to use it, along with a password to access additional resources to supplement the program. Lessons are separated and include the icons and related activities, as well as helpful background information. There are two types of activities included: Hands-on activities to help children learn more about the science topics in the readings and the project activity. Hands-on activities vary from simple science experiments to simple card games (templates included). The Project Activity is more involved with the child working on it throughout the course. The project activity will require a trifold presentation board, and other craft supplies to complete. Additional supplies are required for the activities and a complete lesson-by-lesson supply list is included at the front of the book. Supplies are common household or easily sourced items – like construction paper, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, lima beans, vegetable oil, banana, craft items, wax paper, celery, etc. Contact us for the full list. Apologia has done a stellar job providing a God-centered, gentle exploration of science for our youngest learners. Focusing on exposure and wonder, the child's interest and attention set the pace, and not an artificial schedule. Spiral bound. ~Deanne

Category Description for Apologia Science

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.
