Description

This is just a fascinating study of the ancient Egyptian language, both written and spoken. For the fan of ancient history or the lover of languages, it is an interesting challenge to learn a pictorial language well enough to read it in context. I liked how the book begins with the symbols and sounds. In fact, I would use index cards to memorize these if I were a student. It is hard to equate this to a modern spoken language course that would be a high school credit. This feels like an addition to a study, or possibly an elective credit if completed in one year. There is plenty to read in English about the history of the symbols and such. Much of the book is spent on learning symbols and their origins, putting them together, translating these “sentences" and ultimately creating your own. I think a student would really dig into this program and get a lot in return. 300 pgs, pb. ~Sara
