Category Description for Breaking the Spanish Barrier Level 1:
Level 1 (Beginner) requires no prior language experience but getting used to new sounds and spellings can take practice. This level, therefore, spends a lot of time on pronunciation.
Category Description for Breaking the Spanish Barrier:

Category Description for Breaking the Language Barrier Programs:

The Breaking the Language Barrier (BLB) program provides a core text/workbook/reference (aka the worktext) all in a one-on-one conversational format for the student. While other programs focus on listening and speaking alone, BLB provides in-depth grammar, writing and culture. Start out with conversation right away as part of Level 1’s Ten Steps. This section provides the student time to get familiar with the sounds of the language without any stress of grammar. All grammar will be explained in the lessons that follow. Your student will write directly in the non-reproducible worktext. Parents, don’t worry as you won’t need to know the language.

New for ‘20-21 is the Online Instruction for the student (1-year access). The online access code provides 12 months of access to the online version of the print textbook, with integrated audio, video, cultural articles, answers, beautiful pictures of sites of interest, and notable people from the country being studied. The exercises are interactive. A student can click on any single answer, see immediately if he/she is right or wrong, and view the correction. There are also responsive flashcards with sound files, oral questions, and video instructional capsules. But the content -- explanations, exercises, and dialogues are the same as the print book. Activities closely follow the worktext, but the online does not replace the worktext, rather they work together to create a complete learning experience. New for 2022 in the online access: answers now autosave and track student progress, composition prompts can be emailed to a teacher for review, and each student receives 90 minutes of coaching time for oral practice with Time2Talk!

Level 1 (Beginner) requires no prior language experience, but getting used to new sounds and spellings can take practice. This level, therefore, spends a lot of time on pronunciation. Level 2 (Intermediate) starts with good review of Level 1 before presenting new material. Level 3 (Advanced) reviews the first two years, adding more advanced grammar concepts, expressions, and geography.

Each course is one year in length and should qualify for a high school credit. The Homeschool Package is required to successfully use the program. Digital Access Homeschool packages include the aforementioned website access, and the following print resources: Student Worktext, Answer Key, Test Packet, and a small pocket, laminated pocket guide (Oasis). Worktext and Tests are consumable, but not reproducible. Access Codes can be purchased separately for 12 months. Online access has replaced the audio component formerly on a CD, however, there is so much more content here! ~Sara

I read a good review on-line from a homeschool mom with a PhD in teaching Spanish. I also like that it has 3 levels, which is a bit hard to find.

Sarah recommended it! I have not had good luck with Rosetta Stone for my older children and was looking for a different spanish curriculum that is solid and well written.

My son is showing interest in learning Spanish. I have been recently trying to learn myself and already know the basics. I am hoping I can use this to teach him the basics.

Two people recommended this course. Looking through it, I think is going to be a good choice. Colleges like written elements.
Wilma N on Sep 7, 2021
From what I could find, it is one of the only language programs that a parent did not need to know the language to still allow the student to have success in learning it without a hands on teacher.

We have used duolingo for the last two years, and while fun and easy, my kids haven't progressed at all. I am hoping this more structured course will help my homeschooled 8th grader get a firm grasp on Spanish, and I'm planning on relearning with her, since it's been 20+ years since I studied Spanish in college. This one looks thorough and interesting.

What age or grade level is this curriculum recommended for?
A shopper on Sep 16, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I've started this program with my son's in grade 9. They enjoy the online option. Tests are well designed to ensure retainment, compression, and accurate assessment. We are also supplementing online with the ulat, and the free app Duolingo.
If I have 2 students doing this program at the same time, can I just purchase 1 package with online access plus extra consumables, or would each student need their own online access code?
A shopper on Aug 16, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The course is designed to be each student with their own online access.

Meh. Teacher needs to know Spanish to make this curriculum user friendly.
Too rigorous. My daughter aced Spanish 1 in local high school. We jumped into intermediate level BTB Spanish edition and it's going straight into heavy memorization. But there's no online lecture component and the lessons aren't very detailed. It's just a bunch of facts laid out. And some of the verb conjugations aren't laid bare. They need lessons to go along with it…the online portion is basically a replica of the book.

Response from Rainbow Resource Center
The program is designed for an independent learner with the worktext and online access. The issue may be the content she covered in class was not what is covered in the first year of Breaking the Barrier, thus, she was not prepared for the grammar.

Starts too hard
We purchased this program as a follow up to having used programs for younger students and apps so my student was not new to Spanish. However, it still started WAY too fast for us. There is a Level 0 that comes before lesson 1 that expects students to know and quickly learn new words, conjugate verbs, and read and write in Spanish from day one. If you make it to lesson 1, there are flash cards and some support in the computer program to assist, but those are not present for this section that the text believes will be review. These words include not only typical family words like madre and padre, but the words for brother and sister in law. Words that are not typical to see in other programs you may have used to prepare for this program.

The program does say to expect to take a few weeks to do this level 0 part, and if you are willing to figure out with your student how to divide these intense topics up into smaller chunks and review them, it may work for you. When I spent the money on this program (purchasing all the parts) I did not expect I would need to plan to make our own flash cards and create more materials to support my student like this would require of me.

I love the concept of this program with the workbook based lessons and if your student is already fluent in Spanish and just needs formal instruction for credit, this could be a great option. However, if you student has never studied Spanish or has any learning disabilities, I would not recommend this program. It is just too aggressive out of the gate unless you, as the teacher, are willing to put in a LOT of time and effort to help your student use a program that does not really have a teacher's guide (though there is an answer key if you purchase it).

The material before level 1 is called the 10 Steps. The purpose is to introduce the student to the sounds of the new language without asking them to produce anything. They are to notice the differences in how words look in Spanish vs English, but do not have to DO anything just yet. A student might spend a week on this section, or several weeks if necessary.

Too Confusing!
We tried this program for several weeks before giving up. I wanted something my daughter could do completely independently and she was unable to make sense of it. She said the main problem was they were being asked to write out answers in Spanish to questions asked in Spanish before having learned anything. Not even the alphabet had been taught yet. We are going back to La Clase Divertida. It's not as polished of a program but at least it progresses in an order that makes sense.

Hi Melissa, I'm sorry she didn't like it. You might just take more time with each step of the lesson online to help things make sense to her. Keep in mind the La Clase Divertida does not qualify as a high school credit in foreign language.

Very memorization heavy
Perhaps this is a Classical style curriculum, but my teens and I found this to be extremely "memorize this long list of words" heavy -- and not even the most useful words. Within the first two weeks of an introduction to Spanish, the students are expected to memorize the word for sister in law. Almost no reading exercises -- just memorization and some speaking.

The one thing that I did like was the online portion where the students can listen to native speakers. Everything in the textbook is duplicated online. It's odd, however, that the beginning pronunciation rules do not jive with the way the native speakers then pronounce the words!

As much as I invested in this curriculum, we have decided to cut out losses and use it as a secondary source.
