Standards-Based Connections: Reading - Grade 5
Standards-Based Connections Reading for grade 5 offers focused skill practice in reading comprehension. A skill assessment will point out students' learning gaps. This allows teachers to choose appropriate student pages for individualized remediation. The student pages emphasize five important reading comprehension skills: summarizing, inferring, story elements, comparing and contrasting, and cause and effect. The book includes high-interest fiction and nonfiction, with texts about pandas, the eye, the Liberty Bell, Bessie Blount, elephant preservation, and more.
Each 96-page book in the Standards-Based Connections Reading series includes a skill assessment, an assessment analysis, targeted practice pages, and an answer key, making this series an ideal resource for differentiation and remediation. The skill assessments and assessment analyses help teachers determine individualized instructional needs. And, the focused, comprehensive practice pages and self-assessments guide students to reflection and exploration for deeper learning!
Aligned to current state standards for reading comprehension skills (story elements, summarizing, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and inferring), this grade-level series from Carson Dellosa often provides a unique perspective or twist on familiar stories. For instance, the landing of the Mayflower is viewed by a young girl watching from the side of the boat and by a young Native American boy watching from the shore. Or, the familiar rhyme Jack and Jill is rewritten from Jack's perspective and from Jill's, each with a subtle, unexpected twist (Jill only followed Jack down the hill to see if he needed a bandage).
The book starts with a skills assessment (one-page worksheet for each skill). The answer key for this assessment is followed by an analysis chart that identifies the CCSS standards for literature and informational text. Details are then given that clarify which practice pages focus on those skills. Reproducible, black and white worksheets provide practice sections for each of the reading comprehension skills: story elements, summarizing, cause/effect, compare/contrast, and inferring. Skill practice is divided between literature and informational sources. There's a lot of variety in the worksheets, which are sometimes one page and sometimes continued over multiple pages. The number of exercises for each skill varies, too, with 10-14 exercises per skill. A complete answer key is included.
