In this series, mini lessons give targeted instruction in language and writing by breaking them down into manageable chunks in a structured format. The writing books teach students how to organize and practice different genres of writing such as argumentative, explanatory, and narrative. A variety of fiction and nonfiction texts are made available to teach students how to respond to one or multiple texts followed by prompts and graphic organizers that require a close reading of text and text-dependent responses. A grading rubric for each genre of writing is also included. Language lessons focus on grammar usage and vocabulary practice. Each standards-based lesson gives step-by-step instructions (which should take about 10-15 minutes). The lessons are followed by guided practice pages with instructional support and independent practice pages to reinforce each concept. An answer key and assessments are included in the back. If you are looking for a resource to teach standard-based writing and language, this series provides purposeful mini lessons and guided practice to build your student’s competency in these areas of language arts.
These materials are also comprehensive in scope but are supplemental as opposed to more complete programs.
