Conceptual Physics, Full Version Self-Study Online Course
This online course, when combined with the Conceptual Physics (12th Ed.) text, comprises a high school level physics course. The online course contains video instruction and demonstrations, reading assignments, quizzes, worksheets, chapter summaries, exams and study guidance.
There are 41 lessons in the online course, which is a year's worth of material, especially if using at the high school level in combination with other academic courses. There are several options for labs, depending on how much of a lab component you would like. The simplest option is completing the labs provided in the end-of-chapter activities in the textbook, while more involved "PhET" labs can be accessed with the course contents. (There is a lab book that correlates for the Conceptual Physics textbook available from other textbook resellers for the most complete lab experience, although most labs will require classroom physics lab equipment.) For more detailed information on the course, download the PDF "User's Manual" above.
This self-study physics course walks the student through Paul Hewitt's favorite content, which, no surprise, is practically the entire book. This is ample content for a two semester course of study. Highly recommended for students needing an introduction to the essential concepts of physics, whether it be to fulfill a science requirement or as preparation for further studies. The material is presented in 41 self-paced lessons. In addition to video tutorials and reading assignments, eight unit exams are provided along with study aids, such as worksheets, simulations, and automated quizzes. Importantly, for each lesson, the author provides his personal comments and guidance regarding the material. Also includes a complete set of meaningful and engaging labs using only materials available from home or a discount store. To learn more about this course, please review the Conceptual Physics users manual.
The Conceptual Science textbook series along with Conceptual Self-Study Online courses provide a wonderful option for science at the higher levels. These thorough texts are a super option for a secular science text. a La Carte editions of these texts are unbound, 3-hole punched (you provide a binder) versions of the full text that let you take out only what you need (rather than carrying the whole text), and the margins are wider for notetaking purposes.
Conceptual Academy is an online option that offers flexibility, rigor, and content-rich courses for a solid science curriculum. The authors of the Conceptual Science textbooks have created these video tutorials to complement their texts and are a great option for independent learners. These are self-study courses in which the author becomes the instructor. "FYI" pages within the course help with frequently asked questions. There are worksheets, chapter summaries, and unit exams with directions on how to take them using the collaborative "pyramid" format. Hands-on activities within the textbook can serve as the labs. The courses can be accessed from laptops and desktop computers, and 'mobile links' are posted with each video lesson that allow play on mobile devices. The textbook must be purchased separately.
The sequence of these texts and courses are as follows: Physical Science Explorations and Integrated Science Explorations at the junior high level, then Conceptual Physics, Conceptual Chemistry, then Conceptual Biology (still in development. If beginning this series at the high school level, then the student should begin with upper level Conceptual Physical Science before going on to physics, chemistry, and biology. Please note that the complete course requres purchase of the textbook AND the online course. Older edition textbooks can be used with some modification.
Items listed in this section tend to be complete science programs with a teacher and student component, requiring few supplements besides science supplies.
