Product Description:

This classic edition features detailed renditions of Shakespeare’s Tales in a way that is comprehendible to children, while still keeping many of Shakespeare’s Elizabethan-age English terms. The story is frequently accompanied by illustrative pictures, helping the reader to paint a mental picture of the scenes and characters being read about. Although created to assist younger readers, this book may still be very enjoyable to older audiences. 449 pgs, pb.

Publisher Description:

First published in 1807, these simple retellings of the plots of Shakespeare's plays have delighted generations of children, while serving as an excellent introduction to the dramas of our greatest playwright. Shakespeare's own language is used as much as possible to accustom children to the English of the Elizabethan age and so make easier their transition to the reading of the plays themselves. Numerous black and white illustrations by Louis Rhead complement the text. Ages 10-14

Category Description for Tales from Shakespeare:

Although first published in 1807 with the intent of being "an introduction to the study of Shakespeare," these prose retellings by Charles and Mary Lamb have stood the test of time. Because the plays are told in story format, they can be somewhat easier for children to understand than the play format, and give a good basis for understanding the complete play when read later. These unabridged editions feature twenty retellings of Shakespeare's plays, including The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice, King Lear, Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello and more.

I homeschool my daughter and I like to follow the Charlotte Mason reading list by year. This book was on the year 2 list. All of the books from that list have been incredible. With the literature from that list added to her usual subjects, I feel like she's getting an education that is broad, deep and beautiful. She will need it to grow up in the world we live in now.
