Publisher Description:

Geography is essential to a child's education. And basic to that study is a simple outline of states, countries and continents. In Draw the USA I have tried to give students an easy introduction to committing the map of the USA to memory. Through simple, step-by-step instructions, students learn to draw each state as it connects to its neighbors and, with a little practice, will be able to draw the country as a whole.

Category Description for ArtK12 Draw the World Series:

Kids hear and read names of places in connection to history, people, events, books, vacation plans - everywhere! But without an understanding of geography, all places only mean "somewhere." This series aims to help children commit maps of regions to memory. With simple, fun instructions, children start at one end of a region and work their way around until they can easily draw the whole region from memory. Pages have the featured state or country name at the top, tan backgrounds and a colorful border across the bottom featuring buildings, landmarks, animals, and vehicles representative of the region. The middle of each page holds the surrounding states/countries/features learned so far, bordered in black and labeled with their abbreviation (states) or name (countries, major bodies of water), and the one being learned bordered in red along with memorable instructions for drawing it. For example, Learn to Draw Africa begins with drawing the Red Sea: "At the top, right side of the paper (not too close to the edge), begin with the Red Sea. It's easy to draw; it looks like a slug oozing its way up toward the top of the page." From there you'll add countries moving westward and then south, one at a time, until you can draw the whole continent! Text is a handwritten font and outlines are simple sketches. Though an actual map is always a nice resource, these simplified shapes will be much easier for young students to draw than all those little nooks and bumps! To contrast this series with the Drawing Around the World series, this book's sole focus is being able to draw the region and uses simple shapes, while Drawing Around the World also includes state/country facts and information, review of state/country names, blank map labeling, and more exact borders. Drawing Around the World is a write-in series, while you will practice these books with your own paper. Books run approximately 65 pages, measure 8.5"x11", sc. - Steph

We used the Draw Europe book first and found it really helpful to put all those countries into our minds. We had fun practicing drawing the countries on our large glass windows with a white board marker and look forward to learning the 50 states in the same way! This seems to be an excellent series.

Does this include drawing or learning the topography of the land and/or key cities or capitals?
A shopper on Feb 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is a great book to help kids visualize each state, but it does not reference capitals or topography, other than significant lakes, bodies of water, and mountain ranges. The main purpose of this book is to help you draw the states in relation to the other states. We found it to be enormously useful, and it was easy enough to add in the capitals/features after the fact. Hope that helps!
Does the edition of Draw the USA sold by Rainbow Resource contain the state abbreviation errors that were present in the first edition?
A shopper on May 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure what edition we have. Ours has a 2015 copyright. I found one abbreviation error which I would classify as a typo. In one page of the text, the Arkansas page, the parethetical abbreviation was AK instead of AR. The map on the same page (and all subsequent pages) showed the correct AR abbreviation. In fact, all abbreviations on the map pages were correct. Frankly, this one error would be easy to correct and hardly detracts from this delightful and engaging geographical drawing lesson.

Fun learning
My children and this teacher really enjoyed this! We combined it with U.S. history and did it one time a week. We then used their own map to drill them on the states each week. Later, we added a few of our own geographical touches like mountain ranges, lakes and oceans. The finished product was wonderful and the kids were very proud of it.
