Publisher Description:

Computer video lessons to accompany each section in Paul A. Foerster’s Algebra 1: Expressions, Equations, and Applications. (The text must be obtained separately.) The videos were designed to accompany the Prentice Hall Classics version of the text, but it will work well with earlier editions from 1999 onward.

Pair a well-loved high school math series (Foersters) with video instruction and you have a winning combination. Math Without Borders Home Study Companions provide an element of confidence; the conviction that a challenging high school math course is completely manageable. Why? You have a teacher in your corner. One who calmly and clarifyingly teaches math. Initially programs were on thumb drives, but all have transitioned over to digital downloads. The videos provide electronic whiteboard presentations to accompany the textbook lessons plus worked solutions to selected assigned problems.

The Paul Foerster math courses are considered an excellent choice for college prep math, but were not as readily available. Sometimes, it was even hard to get an answer key. David Chandler and Math Without Borders changes all that. These excellent courses (the geometry uses "Geometry: A Guided Inquiry") provide a quality, college-prep, high school scope and sequence and they are do-able in a homeschool setting even if mom is a mathophobe.

The idea is to read the day's lesson, then watch the video. Use half of the lesson problems as a daily assignment; use the remainder if additional practice is needed. The Math Without Borders videos include explanatory videos plus worked problem solutions for either select problems or the even problems. These solutions can be used to get over a roadblock. Many of the courses include a Resources File which provides spreadsheets and material referred to in the lessons.

Each course includes material on how to set up the course, what texts to use and how to use them, as well as links for obtaining suggested free software downloads. Some courses include printable pdf material.

Although a mentoring approach to assessment is encouraged, Mr. Chandler does provide suggestions for material that can be used as self-tests or assessments. ~ Janice

Algebra I text is Algebra I: Expressions, Equations, and Applications by Paul Foerster (Prentice Hall Classics edition). The odd-numbered problems have answers given at the back of the book (use these for homework). Lessons are useful with older editions of the text.

Geometry text is Geometry: A Guided Inquiry by Chakerian, Crabill, and Stein. (several publishers and different printings but all with identical content). Demonstration files from the lessons require a free program Geogebra - (available as download).

Algebra 2 with Trigonometry text is Algebra and Trigonometry: Functions and Applications by Paul Foerster (Prentice Hall Classics edition). Mr. Chandler notes that trigonometry is rarely taught as a separate course anymore but rather paired with either Algebra 2 or Precalculus. Paul Foerster includes it in both courses. Math Without Borders strongly suggests that taking both courses (don't skip the Precalculus course) is recommended because work leading up to calculus is foundational for later math courses and mathematically based professions. Lessons are useful with older editions of the text.

Precalculus text is Precalculus with Trigonometry: Concepts and Applications, 3rd ed. by Paul Foerster (copyright 2012). Lessons are useful with older editions of the text.

Calculus text is Calculus: Concepts and Applications, 2nd ed. by Paul Foerster (copyright 2005). Lessons are useful with older editions of the text.

This purchase goes along with Foester Algebra 1. Math Mammoth 7 (a terrific math program) recommended Foester Math. This video series will be wonderful for my current student as well as as for her younger sister in a year and a half. We have loved MM so much that we are comfortable accepting Maria Miller's suggestions without a second thought. Math W/O Boarders offers much guidance to teaching parents as well.

I researched this on a Mammothmath review onlline and they gave Prentice Hall along with the ome Campanion algebra 1 thumdrive an excellent review. I believe this will be a great fit for my son who has struggled with algebra at his homeschool co-op.

I chose this product after reading multiple reviews on how great of a companion this thumb drive is to Forester's Algebra 1 textbook. I am not a math wiz, so I have now come to the end of the road with my 8th grade home schooled son when it comes to Algebra. I don't think I could complete this curriculum with confidence without such a great tool and instructor. Thank you for this product in advance!

I've been having difficulty finding an Algebra 1 curriculum that works for my son. Foerster's Algebra comes well-recommended by Maria Miller of Math Mammoth, and I very much value her opinion. I purchased the textbook, and am very happy with it. This Home Study Companion course is recommended to accompany it. I have viewed samples and I'm very pleased. I'm looking forward to this high-quality introduction to higher mathematics for my son.

Maria from Math Mammoth highly recommends Foerster and its Home Study Companion by Math Without Borders. I greatly value Maria's opinion as both, my son and I, love and appreciate her curriculum. I also read many other favorable reviews for Foerster/MWB. I thus have high expectations of this program. I so hope this will turn to be a good match for my mathy son.

I was looking for a thorough and challenging program for my math loving son and read the review for Foerster's Algebra 1 on Math Mammoth. I bought the book first and it looks great, so I decided to order the companion for video support. Homeschooling higher grades is a little intimidating for me and I'll feel more comfortable knowing I have a resource to cover my weaknesses.

This is video instruction on each lesson in the Forester's Algebra 1 textbook. It was recommended by Maria Miller of Math Mammoth. I foresee it helping my kids learn their lessons with a teacher giving them instruction prior to doing their daily work.

BEST ANSWER: No, not every problem has a worked solution. The Math Without Borders videos include explanatory videos plus worked problem solutions for either select problems or the even problems. These solutions can be used to get over a roadblock. Answers to the odd-numbered problems are in the back of the student text.
Where can I find the answers to the Chapter Tests? I have searched the thumb drive I purchased and cannot find any. also the back of the book doesn't include any answers to the chapter tests either. Thank you for the help!

BEST ANSWER: You find these in the solutions Algebra 1 , by Paul Foerster.

can i copy the files over to the hard drive (and run them from there) so i don't have the thumb drive sticking out my son's laptop?
A shopper on Apr 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. As a matter of fact, the author suggests transferring documents from flash drive to a hard drive, and just using the flash drive for other files you might like to store on it. I opted to save on the hard drive, plus keep it on the flash drive - in the event our computer crashes.
Is this the same as the companion thumb drive from Math Without Borders? Is this the one with video lessons?
User on Jun 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We get these thumb drives directly from Math Without Borders and yes, they are the video lessons.

Good to have a teacher
Just started using the home study guide and I love that David gives little pointers that helps you understand little nuances in the problems that you might miss as well as different ways to solve a problem. He provides the solutions to all the even problems so you have complete solutions manual to both even and odd problems between David and the text. Love the test chapters also have explanations and solutions to the all the problems.

Very helpful
I picked Foerster's Math in part because I knew I would have the Math Without Borders to fall back on if we got stuck. I am decent at algebra, but my daughter gets so frustrated with math that she has a hard time making any forward progress when she can't figure things out completely on her own. She started Foerster's math and did well for 6 chapters. In chapter 7 she got lost. So I ordered this, and she watched the video for each lesson in the chapter. (She hates video lessons. We have tried others. But she says that this guy is very easy to listen to, and the lessons are nice and short!) She got grades in the 80s and 90s instead of 50s when she retook all the lessons in Chapter 7 using these videos. I will have her watch lessons as needed as we progress through the book. Even if she doesn't need it for any other chapter, it was worth it just for this one!

This is awesome to have with the book. Sometimes when I'm explaining a formula to my home-schooled son and he just wont get it. I can have him watch the lesson from the thumb drive and it gets explained to him in another way that will make sense to him.
