The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.

The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.

Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.

Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.

Category Description for Explode the Code:

A phonics program, utilizing workbooks, covering letter sounds and most phonograms. Ample practice using a variety of exercises helps children to both learn and reinforce reading skills. These are particularly well-conceived, with alternate (incorrect) choices containing most probable letter or word confusions. This will assure well-honed phonetic reading skills. There is plenty of practice here, so if you use these in conjunction with another phonics program (for reinforcement), you will want to pick and choose exercises or pages to complete. The "1/2" level books provide practice for the skills learned in the whole-level books Please note that Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code no longer include teacher's guide inserts. A much-enhanced teacher's guide is now available separately, that contains teaching information and answers for these three books. Teacher's guides are available for upper levels as well, with each teacher's guide covering two levels.

The new second edition features some small changes from the original, including revised student instructions, some updated content and artwork, and revised stories in Book 7 and 8. There is also a new chart on the inside front cover of the teacher guides which shows the overall lesson routine.

My 4 1/2 year old went through Explode the code 1, 1/12, and 2. She has begged for the rest of the books and can hardly wait till they get here. She frequently started into the books without any prompting and directed herself through the lesson. An excellent, fun program to help anyone be an eager learner.

I love these books. It is methodical for reading. You can go as fast or slow as you want. I recommend pairing these with either Craft Right Brain readers with sight word cards or with Sing Spell Read and Write readers on online sight word cards.

One of my students needs a little more confidence before moving into long vowels. This should be perfect. My parents have commented that the kids are reading better and have progressed further this year than when we used another popular Christian curriculum. By the end of the kindergarten year they will have gotten through books 1,2 and 1/2 of three and be off to a strong start in reading.

We are going back and working on making sure we have a solid understanding of the basics. We've made it 1/2 way through the first 4 books in the series (ETC 1-4) and are working with a tutor who recommended going back to the beginning to really hammer in the concepts for a firm understanding and for confidence building.

According to the table of contents, Explode the Code 2 1/2 covers more ending consonant blends than Explode the Code 2. Could someone please verify?
Jamia on Jun 1, 2021
BEST ANSWER: That is correct. All of the half books are an extension of the whole number books. Book 1.5 is more work on short vowels as in Book 1, etc. They are not required, but are helpful for the child needing more time with a concept. Some parents will even use the half books to extend a single sound - short "a" for example, rather than finishing book 1 and then doing book 1.5.

I totally recommend Explode the Code. I am a first grade teacher and I use it as a supplement to our curriculum. This would be great for homeschool too. The format is simple and kids can do it independently after it has been modeled a few times. It is an excellent program and highly effective. I have only used the phonemic awareness/phonics portion from books ABC to 21/2

Excellent phonics supplement
Fantastic extra practice! Highly recommended for any older learners still struggling with blends. I like that this edition introduces some new activities that are slightly more advanced than book 2 without being too difficult. Using this with my 8 year old twins with dyslexia along with All About Reading. They go together great!
