It’s time for the 9th Annual RRC Summer Book Contest 2022: This year’s theme is write an Underdog story! Purchase this kit to enter the contest… while supplies last. One kit per author only. This kit includes: 18 story pages; a cover page; and 10 washable markers; contest instructions and rules; and your kit’s tracking number (needed for entering). After mailing your completed pages to Lulu Jr., you will receive one hardcover version of your book in 2-3 weeks. Be sure to follow all contest rules and requirements. Note the checklist and the judging criteria (Rubric) we use—listed above. Official launch for the contest is May 1. Contest Entry Deadline is September 1. Winners will be announced November 10 at noon CT. To receive free economy shipping on this kit, simply make a note in the ORDER COMMENTS BOX on our shipping page stating, “for Book Contest,” and we will adjust shipping for that item only. Can you use this kit without being in the contest? My son was hoping to make a second book on a topic of his choice.
BEST ANSWER: Yes! You can! In the past I purchased more than one contest kit, because they are cheaper at this time of year. I believe that each child can have only one ENTRY per year. However, you can purchase more than one kit. Every kit comes with the material and code needed to go to the printers. Good luck!

Can you buy this kit and make a book without entering the contest? My son was interested in a second kit to make a story about a topic he picked.
BEST ANSWER: Yes! You can buy this kit to make your own book, and you do not have to enter the contest!
If you want to enter the contest there is a code to include with the book when you send it back in for printing. Also take note that the colors in your art will not print as dark, but will come back quite a bit lighter.

We have an old kit from a previous year that we never used. Can it still be used to make a book?

What do you mean by "kit is only useable in the U.S."? We are presently abroad but have a U.S. address. Is there something about the kit that requires physical presence in the U.S.?
BEST ANSWER: We can only ship to the US, and you have to mail in your pages to Lulu Jr.

My girls both want to participate but it’s too late for this year. Will the contest kits be available as Christmas gifts for next years contest if they just wait till summer to use them and get the new theme?
BEST ANSWER: Hello, the contest kits are available at this price until we sell out. We do carry the same kit all year at a bit higher price. You may want to get them now for Christmas gifts!

Do the authors of the overall winning books get a portion of the money made from the book's sales?
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will create a revenue stream from Rainbow and you will receive payment once or twice a year.

Do you have to use the markers that are included in the Illustory kit to color in illustrations, or can we use other materials like colored pencils etc.? Also can the illustrations be black and white?
BEST ANSWER: You do NOT have to use the markers that are included. You may use your own markers, colored pencils, etc.

Will Rainbow Resource or Lulu Junior own the copyright for the story/characters if the book is entered in the contest? For example, the story I am hoping to enter includes characters that I created which I have other stories/comics about, which I want to publish some day (not just in the story contest).

I have a child with a disability, he cannot print very well, but can type. Is there anyway someone can print for him, or can he type it? Only asking because he does want to write a book, but his pruning is very hard to read.

The child only uses the front of each page to lay out the story, but I understand that the interior of the book will be printed as two-page spreads. So will pages one and two be printed as a spread so that page one is on the left and two on the right? Or will page one be on the right and page two on the back, creating the first spread with pages two and three?
BEST ANSWER: The very first page in the book is the dedication page. That means that pages 2 and 3 with be the first spread with page two on the left and page three on the right.

Is the shipping free for the summer writing contest kit?
BEST ANSWER: Yes, shipping will be free for the summer writing contest. However, the free shipping will not be in effect until the contest kicks off on May 1st. Also, if you order online, you will have to pay the shipping initially and then we will refund it back to you after the order is processed. If you place a phone order, the shipping can be taken off before your card is charged.

Do you need to purchase a kit for each child or can a family share?

BEST ANSWER: For the contest, there can only be one child per entry. However, if you wish to create a family book without submitting for contest, then that can be done.

BEST ANSWER: You will need one box per child. Each box/kit is for one book and for one child.

Can you add pages to the kit if you run out of space?
Is 18 pages the max you can have or is it the minimum?
BEST ANSWER: Both. If you submit more than 18 pages, only the first 18 will be printed. If you submit less, your book will have blank pages.

I have three children, ages 7-10. Would it be possible to have them work on a book together and submit it as a group project, without my help?
BEST ANSWER: In terms of the contest, it should be one author per book. If you are only interested in having the book printed, then you can decide to do it any way you wish but for the contest submissions, there needs to be only a single author submitted under a single name.

If we bought a few of these for next year would they be able to be bound still? Is there a time limit on bounding the books?
BEST ANSWER: There is an expiration on the kits. The date varies depending on when we receive them into the warehouse. All are active and won't expire prior to the contest deadline but we couldn't make any guarantees for next year. I'm sorry.

Does this price include the book being printed and shipped back to you? Also, do the kids get to keep the printed copy, or do they have to mail it into the Summer book contest (if participating in the summer book contest)?
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the kit price includes the printing and shipping charges. You keep the printed the copy, we will read a digital copy for the contest.

Great way to learn storytelling
This was my daughter's first time entering Rainbow Resource's Illustory contest. She is all about contests and art, and since using NightZooKeeper's story prompts, has been gaining interest in writing her own stories. This contest took her to a much higher level! It was pretty challenging at first and she felt like quitting, but but we came up with a plan to work on it just a little bit every day. When we saw she was making progress and that the end was nearing, she really threw her heart into it and got it done much sooner than we anticipated. Even if she doesn't win, she is very excited about getting her first book "published," and wants to order more for gifts!

We loved it!!!!
I think this was a great idea for kids that want to write! My son hates to write but I got this for him and he completed it! We are still waiting on his book to arrive but other then that it was very fun for him and his story is so great!

My daughters are so excited to use these! Love the book contest idea! Only thing is I wish they could be typed. My girls think it would seem more like a “real book” if they could have typed print in their stories. We’ve been making our own hand written books using your Blank Books, but they think a “real book” should be typed.

Really just paper . . .
One could easily do the same thing with any of the photobook companies (Shutterfly, etc.) and have far more options and control. The idea is good and the contest is cool, but other than that? Not my cup of tea.
