I was looking for a way to encourage my children to love writing and came up with the idea for them to write their own book. They loved this idea and immediately went to work on it. I am glad that this will bind the book for them and they can see their hard work in an actual book.

My son participated in the book contest last year and it was fun for the whole family as we watched his creativity develop during the creation of the book. I'm so glad that he wants to participate again this year. The book we received last year was high quality and many family members and others ordered it. It practically "went viral" in my mother's independent living facility.

It is a great way for my daughter to cultivate and develop her writing skills. I did not realize how much she enjoyed participating in the competition until last year. She did it 2017 and 2018. Last year I did not by the kit and she was not happy. She made me promise to get the kit this year.

Do the authors of the overall winning books get a portion of the money made from the book's sales?
J&T on Jul 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will create a revenue stream from Rainbow and you will receive payment once or twice a year.
Do you have to use the markers that are included in the Illustory kit to color in illustrations, or can we use other materials like colored pencils etc.? Also can the illustrations be black and white?
A shopper on Jul 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You do NOT have to use the markers that are included. You may use your own markers, colored pencils, etc.
Will Rainbow Resource or Lulu Junior own the copyright for the story/characters if the book is entered in the contest? For example, the story I am hoping to enter includes characters that I created which I have other stories/comics about, which I want to publish some day (not just in the story contest).
A shopper on Jul 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The author/illustrator owns the copyright to the material.
My daughter has a more text-heavy story and she plans on including one illustration per 2-page spread. However, she was wondering if she could add lines to some of the illustration spaces so she has enough space for her story?
Carrie on Jul 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Very good question! I asked the same one to Sara Carothers and this was her answer by email:
"Thank you for your email. We considered this factor when setting the guidelines for an adventure story. It causes an issue on the judging side of the contest when some write more than others. We chose to keep to the existing lines this time to keep the judging criteria more equal. It creates an interesting editing challenge for writers! Sorry to say, but no extra lines this year."
Enjoy the process! My son and daughter also had a tough time condensing the story and still keeping all the needed elements, but she was successful in the end. We photocopied the text pages and they did rough drafts until the whole story fit. Then they knew exactly how much text would go on each page without ruining the originals.
I have a child with a disability, he cannot print very well, but can type. Is there anyway someone can print for him, or can he type it? Only asking because he does want to write a book, but his pruning is very hard to read.
A shopper on Jun 17, 2020
BEST ANSWER: From Sara: please email your question directly to me at: Thanks.
Are there rules, if so how do you find them?
A shopper on May 4, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there are rules. A downloadable/printable version is available as part of the description for the Kit - you just need to click on the Show More button.
The child only uses the front of each page to lay out the story, but I understand that the interior of the book will be printed as two-page spreads. So will pages one and two be printed as a spread so that page one is on the left and two on the right? Or will page one be on the right and page two on the back, creating the first spread with pages two and three?
A shopper on Aug 12, 2019
BEST ANSWER: On the book my son did last year, page 1 was by itself and page 2 was behind it. Pages 2 and 3 were a 2 page spread.
Is the shipping free for the summer writing contest kit?
Heather P on Apr 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, shipping will be free for the summer writing contest. However, the free shipping will not be in effect until the contest kicks off on May 1st. Also, if you order online, you will have to pay the shipping initially and then we will refund it back to you after the order is processed. If you place a phone order, the shipping can be taken off before your card is charged.
May I use the Lulu Jr. Illustory Make Your Own Book! kit from last year's contest, to enter the mystery book contest for this year?
A shopper on Jul 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Possibly. You will need to check the expiration date of the kit. If it is still good, then you may use it with no problems. If the expiration date has expired, you will need to contact Explain the situation and ask to use the old kit for our current contest.
Do you need to purchase a kit for each child or can a family share?

BEST ANSWER: For the contest, there can only be one child per entry. However, if you wish to create a family book without submitting for contest, then that can be done.
can you type this year? Or do you have to write it. Thanks
A shopper on May 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Books used as contest entries must be handwritten.
Can I buy 1 box for 3 different books/authors? Or, do I need to buy 1 box per child?
A shopper on Apr 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You will need one box per child. Each box/kit is for one book and for one child.
I see that the kit says "item no longer available." Is it permissible to purchase the kit elsewhere and still enter the contest?
Thank you!
A shopper on Jul 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you may do so as long as it is the exact same IlluStory product.
Can you add pages to the kit if you run out of space?
A shopper on Jul 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No you cannot.
Is 18 pages the max you can have or is it the minimum?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Both. If you submit more than 18 pages, only the first 18 will be printed. If you submit less, your book will have blank pages.
In the Historical Fiction contest rules, it says "if you prefer a more text-heavy story, be sure to include a minimum of one illustration per two-page spread. However, the pages in the kit have specified areas for text and illustrations and are printed on one side only. I would like to know whether I can make my own pages (following the template's margins, of course) or whether there is some other way to address this problem. Would you consider this? Thanks!
A shopper on Apr 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Even though you are creating one-side only single pages, they will be printed as facing pages. If you wish to add extra text for a two-page spread, you can convert illustration space into text apace by adding lines, if necessary. You do need to make sure there is one illustration for each two-page spread.
I have three children, ages 7-10. Would it be possible to have them work on a book together and submit it as a group project, without my help?
User on Apr 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: In terms of the contest, it should be one author per book. If you are only interested in having the book printed, then you can decide to do it any way you wish but for the contest submissions, there needs to be only a single author submitted under a single name.
If we bought a few of these for next year would they be able to be bound still? Is there a time limit on bounding the books?
A shopper on Mar 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is an expiration on the kits. The date varies depending on when we receive them into the warehouse. All are active and won't expire prior to the contest deadline but we couldn't make any guarantees for next year. I'm sorry.
Does this price include the book being printed and shipped back to you? Also, do the kids get to keep the printed copy, or do they have to mail it into the Summer book contest (if participating in the summer book contest)?
A shopper on Mar 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the kit price includes the printing and shipping charges. You keep the printed the copy, we will read a digital copy for the contest.
If we have a US mailbox, but live just across the border in Canada, can we still participate in the contest?
A shopper on Jul 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: At this time, the contest is only open to US residents.
Is this the product for the comic book contest? The promotion page showed a different product (My Comic Book):
A shopper on Jul 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this is the correct item (#62477) and the product is the same, actually, as that shown on the promotion page. We just added the name "My Awesome Graphic Novel" to the title.

My daughters are so excited to use these! Love the book contest idea! Only thing is I wish they could be typed. My girls think it would seem more like a “real book” if they could have typed print in their stories. We’ve been making our own hand written books using your Blank Books, but they think a “real book” should be typed.

Really just paper . . .
One could easily do the same thing with any of the photobook companies (Shutterfly, etc.) and have far more options and control. The idea is good and the contest is cool, but other than that? Not my cup of tea.
