We feel that many adults cannot handle money, even among the church. We are going to teach a class using this at our local church for high schoolers. We believe in good stewardship in all areas including money...it's the number one cause of arguments if not divorce in a marriage.

My husband and I took the Dave Ramsey classes at our church, years ago. We found it very useful then and believe it will be a great homeschool class for our teens now.

It was a course needed for high school. I've heard how it changed friends' spending habits so thought it'd be good to give my teen a head start making wise personal financial decisions.

Why did we choose this, RR, you ask? This was the choice of our Homeschool Group Curricula Selectors, although we do love Dave Ramsey and have really enjoyed his Junior Series for Children and also the Total Money Makeover, etc. Thank you.

I'm so glad you carry this Personal Finance curriculum by Dave Ramsey. We were looking for a math credit for my non-mathy senior and wanted a curriculum that would teach her an appropriate view of handling money. We heard from friends that this was a consumer ed class and much more. I think it will be perfect.

Is this a secular Personal Finance course?
A shopper on Dec 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I don't remember it having anything particularly religious other than he talks about giving to charity or tithing as one of the lessons. But I think everyone should do that, religious or not. :-)
Is this a full years worth of work or a half year? Would this be a half or full credit for high school transcript? Thanks!
Andrea on Apr 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello. I was told that this particular course would only be worth a half credit ELECTIVE. This course does not count as the as the ECONOMICS credit required by many states for a student to graduate. RR can help with finding the correct course to fulfill any state requirement.

That being said, I am glad my son took THIS course & I will have my other children take it as well. Even if it only counts as an elective, this course truly opened my son’s eyes to personal finance, responsibility, risk, & debt. This course should actually be the one required by ALL students to graduate! In fact, my son recommends it for every adult, as well.

If you have further questions about which Economics courses for your student to take, I strongly suggest speaking to RR staff in order to guide you in the right direction.
What is the difference between the 2008 and 2014 editions? I have the 2008, but am wondering if there is enough value added to purchase the 2014.
A shopper on Mar 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: One parent who has used the two previous editions of this course noted that it now includes instruction on the valuable skill of balancing your checking account, the importance of student budgeting, the role of money in interpersonal relationships, career planning, resumes, interview basics, a summary of income and taxes, and the importance of giving your time, money, and talents to help others.
What is the copyright date of this edition? I have the DVDs from what might be a previous edition (2008)and wondered if the current student book will work with my DVDs. Does anyone have experience with this?
Karen J on Jul 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My DVDs and workbook are both copyright 2014, so I'm not sure if your DVDs from 2008 can be used with the current workbook. Sorry I can't help.
What grade/age would you recommend a high school student take the course? Would you do it right away (gr. 9) or leave it until the senior years? Thanks in advance!
A shopper on Feb 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Our family has used it with our co-op for middle school agrees with no trouble. The mom who runs it does the money game for their income and it works fine.
Can you use just the book, or is it a must to have the DVDs also?
A shopper on Feb 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The course is taught from the DVDs and it cannot be done without them. The speakers are very engaging and the course is well worth the money. I highly recommend it.
How many hours of work is this? Could it be considered a semester of high school math?
A shopper on May 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The syllabus that comes with the course suggests spending about 50 minutes a day on each assignment. However, some days didn't require nearly that amount of time, and other days more time was required, particularly if your student does the research and essay projects.

No, you could not count this as a semester of high school math.

I would highly recommend this course for all high school students as it will provide them with a wealth of practical knowledge. If your child actually applies the principles that he learns in this course to his daily living, he will most assuredly build a firm financial foundation that will benefit him for the rest of his life.
Does this curriculum contain any sectarian content?
User on May 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. There are Biblical references, but not interpretation or doctrinal teaching. The course covers primarily financial topics. There is a list of verses on the topic of money found on the teacher CD.
does this curriculum have sectarian content?
A shopper on May 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't think that any of the lessons were overtly "Christian" in their speech, but I am a Christian so I was coming at it from that worldview. I watched most of them with my kids and they talk about things such as "giving to charity" etc. but kind of in a vague way. It was a great course for my high schoolers and I think would be even more beneficial for a young college student. We really liked it.

do a little at a time
We just finished week 3 of this program and, if you follow the teacher's guide and actually just do a little at a time, this is a very powerful program. I've seen this done in co-ops where they just plow through it and pop the video in. This is best done a little at a time (it's a 90 day program) along with the activities. We are taking full advantage of this as a semester credit and the kids have set up checking accounts and have started emergency funds just as the program suggests. I can't stress enough that the students need to do the activities in order for this to be meaningful. If they simply watch the videos, it's not going to sink in. This is not rocket science but it's great to have someone else repeat to your kids what you've been saying all along!

Lots of prep work for teacher
I was hoping this would be more of an independent program for my son, but there is quite a bit of prep work on the teacher's part - printing out tests and extra activity papers. Answers for the student workbook are also included on the teacher disc - so you either need to print those out or pull it up each time you check the workbook and tests. I guess there is a one year program that they can do online which would be an independent study, but I'd rather put the money into something that we can re-use part of or re-sell when finished. The program seems really good and so far my son is enjoying it.
