Starline Press Science is a character-based, state standards aligned, individualized and independent learning curriculum. Each grade level provides self-directed instruction with minimal teacher supervision. Grades 3-8 complete twelve units (booklets) per year, with a suggested 3-week completion timeframe per booklet. Grades 9-11 complete 10 booklets per year. Each grade level incorporates vocabulary lists, fill in the blank questions, chapter reviews, unit review/tests, and labs at most levels. Consumable worktexts are colorfully illustrated soft covers, although newer printings are more like booklets and do not have the perfect binding and glossy covers. Please see publisher website for CA state standards correlation. Available only in complete sets with answer/test keys. ~ Deanne

The information is surface-level with very little depth or explanation, and the review questions for the three different sections (paragraph, chapter, and unit) are simply repeated in those different places. As a result, this works mainly to drill test answers, rather than help kids actually understand what they're reading about. We've been doing a lot of supplemental reading and research so my kids can learn the material rather than memorize test answers.
The illustrations look like old-school clip art and serve mainly to add a fun little picture to the page, rather than for explanatory purposes. In the few places where they are labeled, the quality of the illustration is so poor that you can't really tell which parts the individual lines point to.
There are also mistakes in the answer key, so you need to be on the lookout for that. Your kids won't be able to use this program independently, even though that's how it's otherwise laid out.
On top of that, both student book and answer key are poorly edited (spelling errors abound, random font changes, random italics and underlining). I guess that could be forgiven, though I feel strongly that learning materials should be held to a high standard in this regard.
Overall, a huge disappointment for myself and for my kids.
