Category Description for Wordly Wise 3000 (3rd Ed.):

In the 3rd edition of Wordly Wise 3000 book numbers correspond with typical grade levels (unlike the original edition, Wordly Wise, and the first edition of the 3000 series where it was necessary to add three to the book number to get the grade level). Book 2 includes all the lessons in Book A (1st edition) and lessons 1-7 from Book B (1st edition). It has 15 lessons and 150 vocabulary words. Book 3 includes lessons 8-10 from Book B (1st edition) and all lessons from Book C (1st edition). It also has 15 lessons with 150 words and contains some Greek and Latin root exercises. Students learn 300 new words a year in Books 4-12. Books K and 1 were new with the 2nd edition of the 3000 program, and work just as well with the 3rd edition.

The Student Workbooks contain 20 lessons each with fifteen words. Each lesson includes a Word List with complete dictionary type of entry information, a Finding Meanings exercise (choose two phrases to form a sentence that correctly uses a word), the Just the Right Word exercise (replace a phrase with a single word), an Applying Meanings exercise (using words in context), a Word Study exercise (covers synonyms, antonyms, suffixes, prefixes, and analogies), and a Passage (classic and contemporary authors) with follow-up questions.

The Teacher Resource Books include teacher's guides for the lessons, reproducible tests and reviews, vocabulary activities (including word webs and semantic maps), options for group or individual instruction, pacing options, and answer keys for the tests and Student Book exercises. Tests are designed to prepare students for standardized tests; the format is largely multiple-choice. There are tests for each lesson as well as cumulative midterms and finals. At the upper levels (grade 9-12), each test also features a SAT Sneak Preview section in which additional practice is given in preparation for standardized testing. If you don't think an intensive, thorough teacher guide is necessary, non-reproducible Test Books (with answers) and Answer Keys (for student workbooks) are available separately.

Have an auditory learner? We offer Audio CD sets that correlate to levels 2-12 (no longer available for some levels). These include recordings of each word list to aid pronunciation, along with definitions and comprehension questions, and all reading passages. The number of CDs in each grade level set varies.

The structure of the Kindergarten and 1st Grade Books are a bit different. These vocabulary-building activities include selecting the correct picture in the workbook while the parent reads a story aloud from the teacher pack. Concept and Picture Cards introduce key concepts and words, and the activities prepare students for the kind of content-area reading that they will encounter in later grades. The unique, two-week lesson plans in these beginning books teach and reinforce words and concepts in 20-25 minutes a day. Teacher Packs for K and 1 include extensive lesson plans, Concept and Picture Cards, read-aloud stories and poems, extension and challenge activities, blackline masters, formal and informal assessments for each lesson, assessment checklists and more. At the Kindergarten and 1st Grade levels, these Teacher Packs are a "must-have."

Category Description for Wordly Wise 3000 (All Editions):

Wordly Wise 3000 works. It's a vocabulary-building program that grows with the student, and makes vocabulary acquisition interesting and entertaining. Current editions (4th and 3rd) of Wordly Wise 3000 share a similar format giving interesting word histories, dealing with usage issues, and exposing common usage pitfalls. There are 20 lessons in each level plus five review lessons. Typical lessons contain an alphabetized list of fifteen words (fewer words in lower levels) with a brief, dictionary-type entry for each. These include part of speech, concise definition, and proper usage of the word in the context of an interesting sentence that provides a mnemonic anchor for the word. Following are activity sections which vary slightly with the edition. Crossword puzzles and hidden message puzzles are used for review. The overall word list for the series consists of 3000 words; their selection based on frequency, grade-level literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books. Course components include a Student Book, an Answer Key, a Test Book, and a Teacher Resource Book. Levels K and 1 of both editions differ a bit from Grades 2-12 levels.

The 3rd edition of these books is superb. The 4th editions are quite paltry compared to the vocabulary in the 3rd edition.

I have used these with all 4 of my older children ....and now with 3 of my grandchildren that I am homeschooling.....

We have enjoyed Wordly Wise for several years now, though we have modified some of the ways the children are expected to answer. I don't expect them to write everything out and am content with circling correct answers or conducing it aloud for my dyslexic child.

My son used Book 4 and we have just finished it. I like the amount of words he is learning and we are also using it as his spelling list for the week. I like the way it is formatted and he can do most of it on his own.

Very thorough & challenging. My son did not love this at first, but I began to notice a difference in his vocab while speaking, and his spelling improved. I tested him weekly on meaning & spelling of each word!

Does the book comes with answer keys?
A shopper on Jan 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: There are answers in the Teacher's Edition but there is also a small answer key that provides answers for only the Student Book. Here is the link for the Book 5 answer key:

Diff btwn this and older WW?
A shopper on Dec 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The vocabulary lists are different.
WW 3000 uses dictionary entries of vacabulary words.
WW 3000 has pleasing (simpler, less congested) layout.
Activities in either are reflective of SAT/ACT test questions.
WW 3000, 3rd and 4th edition books are grade level books while WW books are not (i.e. Bk 1 is 4th gr, etc.)
The original Wordly Wise series did not include the story/essay that accompanies each lesson in the 3000 series (1st, 2nd, 3rd ed). A few of these essays contain material that some homeschoolers consider undesireable - non-family-oriented lifestyles and evolution. This controversial material tends to be in the upper levels.
Is it used?
A shopper on Aug 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Not exactly sure what you mean by "is it used". My kids used all of the wordly wise books. The stories are interesting and the questions pertinent. I've used the series for almost 20 years.

Used for Homeschooling
When I started two years ago, the material was a little difficult for my son; But now he has quickly caught on to the format. I appreciate this book because the student is taught how to use the vocabulary words they are learning, incorporate the use of context clues, word study (Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes, and synonyms and antonyms), reading comprehension, and writing.

Good educational material
This is just right at the 5th grade level not too easy that is boring, & not too hard that the student gets frustrated. Good activities & the reading material is great.
