Description
Publisher's Description of Why Shakespeare? Indeed!

Amanda Murray's purpose, with this guide, is to teach you HOW to understand (and teach) Shakespeare in a way that keeps alive the theatrical nature of his work without your having to step onstage! My purpose is to dispel the "I just cant understand it. Why do they talk so funny?" mantra of our modern culture. My hope, through the study of Shakespeare, is that you will learn not just about his work but will be able to see how, like many other playwrights throughout time, he was a product of and commented on the world that surrounded him.

Through the study of his work, you will understand how this man, wise beyond his years, tapped into the splendor of life itself and what it means to be a valiant, loved, honest, courageous and flawed human being capable of the best and the worst. Through his work, it is possible to integrate studies of history, medicine, law, interpersonal communication, literature, politics and the many other subjects that are touched on in the plays.

The book is full-color throughout, and printed on high-quality paper. The 8.5" x 11" book is coil-bound, making it easy to open and lay flat for study.

Category Description for Why Shakespeare?

He spoke English, you know. Well, it doesn't always seem that way and Shakespeare can seem very out of reach. This five-week enrichment study (unit study) will change all that. Not a study of specific plays but an examination of the Renaissance environment, the playwright himself, his language, and his craft. The user-friendly materials are well-organized and attractive. The study itself is lively with a variety of activities, games and interesting information.

With one chapter per week, lesson plans and schedule spread the study over two days per week. Each chapter includes textual information (engagingly written), preparation steps for the instructor ("Be Prepared"), Games and Activities, and a set of discussion questions and essay topics. The full-color course book, written directly to the student includes an excellent Renaissance timeline along with helpful illustrations, and teacher notes. In a resource section and throughout the text are numerous web search suggestions, books/plays, and movie/video lists. The publisher's website includes links. Lapbook suggestions as well as reproducible templates are also included.

Perfect for co-ops, classes, and multi-age families, there are course books in two age categories (Grades K-5 and Grades 7-12). The "for Kids" book is written to the teacher but follows the same five-week organization, making suggestions for younger participants. This book includes five reproducible coloring pages and lapbook templates. The Coloring Pages are detailed Shakespeare-themed sketches printed on quality paper and suitable for colored pencils or fine point marker use. ~ Janice
