Publisher Description:
MCP Phonics Level K develops alphabetic and Phonemic awareness, phonics, and oral langauge skills youngsters need. Letters and sounds are introduced through a consistent six-page lesson sequence, which includes letter recognition, writing the letter, phonemic awareness, sound-symbol correspondence, and a Picture Dictonary page. An array of multisensory teaching options address different learning styles.
With the 2011 edition of Plaid Phonics, the Modern Curriculum Press (MCP) name is gone only "Pearson" is left. The phonics content, however, is unchanged (yay!). The print is slightly bolder; colors are also slightly bolder. The cover has updated graphics and although many of the internal graphics are changed they are essentially the same (i.e. a cow picture is a different one but it's still a cow). Homeschool Bundles are now available for this edition, which includes the student and teacher's edition packaged together at a discount.
Instruction moves from letter recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within books helps student master concepts. They also contain some pages in "standardized test format," so you get a little test preparation as a bonus. There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to jump in anywhere in the program. At each level, there is a consumable Student Workbook and a Teacher Resource Book. Student Workbooks are in full-color and include basic instructions on each page. Units are broken down into lessons with the suggestion of completing 3-6 lessons per week. Although you can use the workbooks as stand-alone supplementation and reinforcement, the Teacher Resource Guides contain complete teaching information to use this as a phonics program. Teacher Resource Guides are spiral-bound and include: pre-tests and post-tests, lesson plans, teaching information, suggested activities, and noted cross-curriculum connections. Homeschool Bundles include both the student and teacher's edition.
A very solid series of phonetic and word study skills, from letter recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within books helps students master concepts. They now also contain some pages in "standardized test format," so you get a little test preparation as a bonus. There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to "jump in" anywhere in the program. Levels K, A, B, and C are in motivating full-color. Levels D-F are available only in two-color editions. We are offering the 2011 edition, the 2003 edition, and the '98 edition. The 2003 edition is updated but highly similar to the 1998 edition; both feature photos instead of the black and white illustrations of previous editions. In fact, a lot of the pages are exactly the same, and about the only real difference I could find at a glance was that the tear-out book pages include only four pages, so you simply fold them in half instead of folding and cutting for eight pages. Homeschool Bundles are also available for this older edition, which include the student and teacher's edition, along with a parent guide booklet.

If you have a kindergarten student who is 5 years old and who is already familiar with letter sounds, get the level A book. You’ll be glad you did!
That said, this book is full of colorful pictures. It has lots of pages, so you can skip anything that seems to repetitive. It is a great resource for anyone who needs written work for a kindergartener to show a state reviewer or for a young child who needs something to do while his older siblings are working.
