Student Workbooks are in full-color and include basic instructions on each page. Units are broken down into lessons with the suggestion of completing 3-6 lessons per week.

Publisher Description:

MCP Phonics Level K develops alphabetic and Phonemic awareness, phonics, and oral langauge skills youngsters need. Letters and sounds are introduced through a consistent six-page lesson sequence, which includes letter recognition, writing the letter, phonemic awareness, sound-symbol correspondence, and a Picture Dictonary page. An array of multisensory teaching options address different learning styles.

Category Description for MCP Plaid Phonics - 2011 Edition:

With the 2011 edition of Plaid Phonics, the Modern Curriculum Press (MCP) name is gone only "Pearson" is left. The phonics content, however, is unchanged (yay!). The print is slightly bolder; colors are also slightly bolder. The cover has updated graphics and although many of the internal graphics are changed they are essentially the same (i.e. a cow picture is a different one but it's still a cow). Homeschool Bundles are now available for this edition, which includes the student and teacher's edition packaged together at a discount.

Instruction moves from letter recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within books helps student master concepts. They also contain some pages in "standardized test format," so you get a little test preparation as a bonus. There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to jump in anywhere in the program. At each level, there is a consumable Student Workbook and a Teacher Resource Book. Student Workbooks are in full-color and include basic instructions on each page. Units are broken down into lessons with the suggestion of completing 3-6 lessons per week. Although you can use the workbooks as stand-alone supplementation and reinforcement, the Teacher Resource Guides contain complete teaching information to use this as a phonics program. Teacher Resource Guides are spiral-bound and include: pre-tests and post-tests, lesson plans, teaching information, suggested activities, and noted cross-curriculum connections. Homeschool Bundles include both the student and teacher's edition.

Category Description for MCP Plaid Phonics:

A very solid series of phonetic and word study skills, from letter recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within books helps students master concepts. They now also contain some pages in "standardized test format," so you get a little test preparation as a bonus. There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to "jump in" anywhere in the program. Levels K, A, B, and C are in motivating full-color. Levels D-F are available only in two-color editions. We are offering the 2011 edition, the 2003 edition, and the '98 edition. The 2003 edition is updated but highly similar to the 1998 edition; both feature photos instead of the black and white illustrations of previous editions. In fact, a lot of the pages are exactly the same, and about the only real difference I could find at a glance was that the tear-out book pages include only four pages, so you simply fold them in half instead of folding and cutting for eight pages. Homeschool Bundles are also available for this older edition, which include the student and teacher's edition, along with a parent guide booklet.

With the 2011 edition of Plaid Phonics, the Modern Curriculum Press (MCP) name is gone - only "Pearson" is left. The phonics content, however, is unchanged (yay!). The print is slightly bolder; colors are also slightly bolder. The cover has updated graphics and although many of the internal graphics are changed they are essentially the same (i.e., a cow picture is a different one but it's still a cow).

I have the older MCP level K book and i love the lessons on each page. I am currently homeschooling my 4 year old and i plan on using it with him. I have a 3 year old that is right behind him. I was planning on just printing out copies from one book so I didn't have to ruin the book and I can get multiple uses out of it, but there are so many lessons I would be wasting so much ink and paper! might as well just order another book!

My older kids loved learning with this and felt it was a treat. This series also gradually takes students from learning "phonics" to learning about word structure and deeper reading skills.

The Plaid Phonics workbooks are an excellent source for teaching children the letters, sounds and writing of the alphabet. It is challenging and fun for all levels of students.

I used Level A with my older son and he really enjoyed the workbook. He went from no reading to proficient reading in a matter of months. This workbook begins easy and gets progressively more challenging in a fun and engaging way. So I decided to try this book for my younger son who is at the kindergarten level.

LOVE Plaid Phonics. Best phonics workbook out there in my opinion. I used it through grade 3 for my eldest and am now starting it for my kindergartner. I like how everything is contained in the workbook... you don't really need a teacher manual. Also a plus for me is that most days, child can do work independently.

This is the best phonics program I have come across in my past five years of homeschooling. Having been unhappy for 3 years of teaching 3 different phonic programs, I was continually looking for something better. My search ended when I purchased MCP. Phonetic concepts are explained in it's simplest form for children to understand and parents to teach. Quick lessons make it very easy to teach especially if you are homeschooling more than one child. I highly recommend Modern Curriculum Press.

Is the teacher guide required?
Mackenzie F on Aug 9, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Not required at all especially if you have experience teaching phonics; directions are written on each page to the teacher/parent. However, if you have little or no actual teaching experience, the teacher guide serves as an invaluable resource.

This workbook will probably disappoint you if you use it with an actual kindergartener. It’s very basic. However, it’s great for a four year old, with adapatation. I’ve used previous edition of this book with my older children, and I’m disappointed with the amount of activities in this book which are simply writing letters (like a handwriting book) vs actual phonics activities (such as ‘circle all the pictures that start with the sound of b’.) However it’s still a useful book, and full of colorful pictures.

If you have a kindergarten student who is 5 years old and who is already familiar with letter sounds, get the level A book. You’ll be glad you did!

That said, this book is full of colorful pictures. It has lots of pages, so you can skip anything that seems to repetitive. It is a great resource for anyone who needs written work for a kindergartener to show a state reviewer or for a young child who needs something to do while his older siblings are working.

Plaid Phonics
Plaid Phonics has some excellent components. However, they tend to jump fairly quickly from one phonics concept to another without having introduced the concept. This approach tends to be more like the "Whole Language" approach as opposed to synthetic phonics. I would like to see a step by step phonics approach in their books.
