Student Workbooks are in full-color and include basic instructions on each page. Units are broken down into lessons with the suggestion of completing 3-6 lessons per week.

Publisher Description:

MCP "Plaid" Phonics Level A helps students become fluent readers. Activities help students develop spelling (encoding), recognize words in context, and use phonics in word-building and personal writing. It provides teachers with a direct model for integrating phonics and reading through reading activities.

Category Description for MCP Plaid Phonics - 2011 Edition:

With the 2011 edition of Plaid Phonics, the Modern Curriculum Press (MCP) name is gone only "Pearson" is left. The phonics content, however, is unchanged (yay!). The print is slightly bolder; colors are also slightly bolder. The cover has updated graphics and although many of the internal graphics are changed they are essentially the same (i.e. a cow picture is a different one but it's still a cow). Homeschool Bundles are now available for this edition, which includes the student and teacher's edition packaged together at a discount.

Instruction moves from letter recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within books helps student master concepts. They also contain some pages in "standardized test format," so you get a little test preparation as a bonus. There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to jump in anywhere in the program. At each level, there is a consumable Student Workbook and a Teacher Resource Book. Student Workbooks are in full-color and include basic instructions on each page. Units are broken down into lessons with the suggestion of completing 3-6 lessons per week. Although you can use the workbooks as stand-alone supplementation and reinforcement, the Teacher Resource Guides contain complete teaching information to use this as a phonics program. Teacher Resource Guides are spiral-bound and include: pre-tests and post-tests, lesson plans, teaching information, suggested activities, and noted cross-curriculum connections. Homeschool Bundles include both the student and teacher's edition.

Category Description for MCP Plaid Phonics:

A very solid series of phonetic and word study skills, from letter recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within books helps students master concepts. They now also contain some pages in "standardized test format," so you get a little test preparation as a bonus. There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to "jump in" anywhere in the program. Levels K, A, B, and C are in motivating full-color. Levels D-F are available only in two-color editions. We are offering the 2011 edition, the 2003 edition, and the '98 edition. The 2003 edition is updated but highly similar to the 1998 edition; both feature photos instead of the black and white illustrations of previous editions. In fact, a lot of the pages are exactly the same, and about the only real difference I could find at a glance was that the tear-out book pages include only four pages, so you simply fold them in half instead of folding and cutting for eight pages. Homeschool Bundles are also available for this older edition, which include the student and teacher's edition, along with a parent guide booklet.

With the 2011 edition of Plaid Phonics, the Modern Curriculum Press (MCP) name is gone - only "Pearson" is left. The phonics content, however, is unchanged (yay!). The print is slightly bolder; colors are also slightly bolder. The cover has updated graphics and although many of the internal graphics are changed they are essentially the same (i.e., a cow picture is a different one but it's still a cow).

This book is great to use in a classroom, with small groups, or 1:1. It is excellent for phonics as well as vocabulary-building, because it is filled with pictures. ELL students and all young children benefit from visuals. Students learn phonics step-by-step. In writing, they learn spelling. They practice using words in the context of a sentence. There are stories to read. My students love this series and even ask me, "Can we work in the books?"
Mary R on Jan 28, 2023
I am a reading specialist and find these books to be a strong supplement to my teaching of reading. The table of contents is very clear about the presentation of the phonics skills and provides many examples of phonemic awareness to be used with students learning to read. I would strongly recommend their use in the classroom. It is very easy to see who has mastered a skill and who needs more work.

I've used these workbooks quite a bit and I recommend level K for preschool, level A for first grade, and so on. Know your students and introduce plaid phonics when they are ready, but don't sell them short. These workbooks are a nice complement to any spelling program.

My older kids loved learning with this and felt it was a treat. This series also gradually takes students from learning "phonics" to learning about word structure and deeper reading skills. In fact, once when I had a surgery and was limited in my teaching ability, my kids could work through many of the pages unaided.
Gayla E on May 30, 2020
great resource! has a good variety of activities 6x. These activities repeat in style so the kids once introduced to the layout can work independently.

This was the phonics series I learned from back in the 1970s. I am a speech-language pathologist now and thought the early level phonics book would be helpful for some of my students.

I have used plaid phonics in my classrooms for over 30 years. I purchase them on my own because I have never found another program that teaches phonics as well. I used the plaid phonics in school when I was a child also!

I have an older version I have used with an older child and was very pleased.

We use it as homework for our first graders. It builds vocabulary, sequentially follows short vowels, long vowels, blends etc in a clear way that is easy for first graders to follow and is simple enough for parents to help their children.

Is there a placement test?
Lisa on Apr 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: There is not a placement test that I'm aware of. However, the book starts with a review of consonant sounds and builds through short vowels, long vowels, blends, and digraphs.
Do you feel like the teacher Manual is necessary?
User on Mar 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I only use my manual for answers if I’m confused or the kids are confused. The lessons are very basic and completely covered with the directions on the students’ worksheets.
do you have sample pages?
A shopper on Feb 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There are sample pages of the workbook on its listing page. Please click on this button: "Click to open expanded view" (found at the bottom of the large graphic).

I used this along with spelling work out A and the combination is really good. I also like that it has extra lessons like /kn/ sounds and contractions. It also has sight word cards and letter cards in the back and tear out readers for the units.
The only child I wouldn't recommend plaid phonics to is one who gets things quickly or who did a lot of phonics work in kindergarten. I used it with a child out of public school who had no phonics instruction and really struggled with reading for her it was perfect.

Plaid Phonics
Plaid Phonics has good material but unfortunately they are not pure phonics. They mix alot of words that have not been introduced as yet to the student. I much prefer Explode the Code which is systematic.
