Publisher Description:

A perfect complement to Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures, the Zoology 1 Junior Notebooking Journal provides everything your student needs to complete his study of Zoology 1. Not only does it include all the fun and creative features of our Regular Notebooking Journals in the Young Explorer Series, but it also contains many additional activities, projects and experiments that can be completed in one day or less.

This Junior Notebooking Journal will serve as your child’s notebook, providing a place for him to complete every assignment in the text.

Each lesson begins with two fun coloring pages for the student to color while he listens to the reading of the text. These pages provide opportunities for active learning while reinforcing the lesson’s content. Following are pages with templates designed to encourage creative expression and written narration. The student can illustrate what he’s learned and write a sentence or two about the topic.

Next, the student is allowed to work with and learn key vocabulary words presented in the text. Included are puzzle piece cut out and match vocabulary activities, partially filled in crosswords, vocabulary stories, plant identification activities and more. These learning activities are not only fun, but they also increase the student’s retention of both the important terms and the subject matter presented in the lessons.

Keeping a scientific notebook has always been standard scientific practice. Apologia’s Junior Notebooking Journals have been designed to:

  • Facilitate retention and provide documentation of your student’s education. The unique personal written and artistic expressions incorporate both sides of the brain.
  • Be flexible and allows for multilevel learning. A twelve-year-old student may write an essay and make an elaborate illustration, while a six-year-old may write one sentence with a stick-figure drawing
  • Help students record experiences, observations, and thoughts
  • Engage students in the scientific process
  • Provide a written history that students can reference as they explore new subject areas
  • Give your student a place where they can record and organize experiences and observations
  • Provide a place to review their notes to create opinions and draw conclusions about the way their world works

Category Description for Exploring Creation with Zoology 1:

Birds, bugs, and bats if it flies, it's explored in this fascinating introduction to zoology! The first portion of the book focuses on birds and their unique characteristics. Kids will learn bird anatomy, how they are able to fly, why they build nests, how they raise their young, and more. They'll also learn to identify the birds they see every day and do activities that explore the habits and preferences of different species of birds. Students will learn about bats, some of the most useful and wonderful flying creatures in the world. As they study the physical characteristics and lifestyle of the bat, they'll gain a new appreciation for these creatures. Finally, kids will get up close and personal to the insect world. They'll learn how to identify and classify the many different types of bugs they see, and they'll even get to design their own experiments with different insect species. Kids will get the opportunity to keep their own field journals as they are encouraged to be their own scientist as they observe and understand the world around them.

Category Description for Apologia Science (K-6):

This popular elementary science series was originally created when Jeannie Fulbright, author and homeschool mom, was looking for a quality elementary science series that was creation-based using the Charlotte Mason approach. When she didn't find the curriculum she was looking for she decided to create her own. These books use the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology including narration and notebooking to develop critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. The series has since expanded to cover more science topics. New for 2021 is Earth Science, authored by Rachel Yunis, author of Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology.

Since the Charlotte Mason method is employed, every lesson is organized with a narrative, notebook work, an activity, and a project. The student notebook is emphasized in the lessons. Activities and projects bring the lessons to life and use simple household items. While the author's intent is for the parent to read these books to elementary students, a student with a 4th-grade reading level could read these books on their own. The books come from a strong creationist viewpoint, including sections called "Creation Confirmation" and Scripture interwoven throughout the book. Apologia recommends spending an entire year covering each book, taking about two weeks to explore most lessons (some lessons may require more time).

Notebooking Journals were a later - and welcome - addition to the series. As they complete the courses, students were encouraged to compile a notebook to collect and display the information they are learning. The Apologia Notebooking Journals now provide a place for the student to complete every assignment, to record experiments and to display work. Included are weekly lesson plans, templates for recording fascinating facts and assignments, and scripture copywork in both print and cursive models. In addition to full-color Miniature Books (for recording facts and information and pasting directly into the notebook), there are optional ideas (Take it Further in Astronomy; Dig in Deeper in Botany; Fly Higher in Zoology, etc.) for lots of additional activities, projects, experiments, books or videos, all of which correlate with specific lessons in each course. Along these lines, the Personal Person project in both of the Anatomy notebooks is special providing clear vinyl overlays of each body system. Be prepared to cut these out, though.

Junior Notebooking Journals are a simplified version of the orignal Notebooking Journals and require less handwriting but have the same reinforcing activities. These books include coloring pages, project pages, and cut and fold miniature books (same ones as in the version for older students). There is space for notebooking assignments (more drawings, no questions to answer) and scripture copywork (shorter verses to copy either in manuscript or in beginning cursive). Biblical quotations are from the NASB, KJV, NIV or NKJV.

To complete the books all you will need to provide is scissors, glue, colored pencils, a stapler, and a few brass fasteners. There are plenty of activity options in the journals, but keep in mind that based on your student, you may not want to complete every activity. Work can be tailored to each student by simply tearing out unwanted pages from the spiral-bound book. Serving both as a uniquely expressed record of the student's work and as a prized reminder of acquired knowledge, these books will become a homeschooling heirloom.

For convenience, we now offer either Advantage Sets or SuperSets. Advantage Sets include the textbook and either the Junior or original Notebooking Journal. SuperSets include the text, the MP3 Audiobook CD and either the Junior or the original Notebooking Journal.

We also offer lab kits from Nature's Workshop for the elementary courses. Kits contain most of the materials for the experiments, and are conveniently packaged by lesson in the corresponding book (sold separately). There are still a few items you will need from around your house, but with these kits the list becomes extremely short. ~ Janice / Jerry

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

Waffling on what I think Pros and Cons
I have some detailed frustrations below, but overall before you buy know this---It's not re-enforcing the text. It's mostly enrichment and other activities that build on text. Lots of blank space for you to use at your discretion with loose topic headings. It's not "must have" and I don't necessarily think it's the best resource to accompany the book for younger kids. I also bought a lapbook and got a worksheet resource off TPT that I think is better.

Overall, I just disagree with the description of this resource. It's described. It's referencing younger students or those with delayed writing and yet the whole thing is writing. It's headlines and blank spaces. It's not "fill in the blank", it's Bird Lesson #2 and blank lines. Some of the spacing is too small to write in. For example, page 28, "Birds in My Yard" there is less than 2" (I measured) to fill in "Behavior" and less than 2" to fill in "Field Marks". My 2nd grader with good hand-writing can't fill it in. The coloring pictures are beautiful to look at, but they are more like adult coloring. I offered to let my 6th grade daughter color them because the 2nd grader didn't even want to attempt. The 6th grader turned it down because they were too detailed and she didn't want to mess them up.

Not needed, but GREAT help for younger students!
We usually got tired of doing science class and quit before we finished the text. This notebook keeps all your experiments, journaling, drawings, etc. organized as you study. The art projects make it fun to review the science facts. So after we bought the student notebook we finished a whole year of science. This notebook has wider lines and less lines than the regular journal, so that it doesn't tire younger students. There are also many activities that don't require writing.

Love it for my challenged son!
My son is smart and loves animals, but he has severe adhd and struggles with writing. This journal is really helping him to learn science journalling. The children's swap shop at the Houston Zoo was so impressed with the journal that they gave my son the highest amount of knowledge points available for this type of thing. He was so proud of the accomplishment. I love this!
