Category Description for Advanced Straight Forward Math:

Does your student need to sharpen some specific skills? Maybe your math curriculum just does not have enough practice exercises or tests. These clean, uncluttered, and “straight-forward” workbooks that follow state and national standards will do the job nicely. Each topic-oriented workbook typically starts with an initial assessment of the child’s skill. Then, worksheets practice the applicable skills, periodic diagnostic tests monitor progress, and review and final exams identify improvement. This method provides a before, during, and after “picture” of skill development. The large number of exercises on each page provide little additional space, so you’ll probably want to work out problems on a separate paper. This multi-volume series addresses the most commonly problematic math skills at any student level. Use the Mastery (i.e. Tests, Fractions) books if you need a tool to understand how well your students grasp concepts and apply basic skills. Operations are specifically arranged to help you see where more attention is needed. Books in the Beginning levels practice introductory skills in any main subject (from operations of single digit adding, subtracting to introductory trigonometry and Pre-Calc). Once these skills are solidified, you’ll find an Advanced book for any skill (such as double-digit adding and dividing to Word Problems, Pre-Algebra, Pre-Geometry, and Algebra (these offer a book at multiple book levels) to Pre-Calculus. Higher levels have fewer assessments. A minor number of “reminder”-type information and some sample problems are offered—typically reserved for higher-level math skills. Includes an answers-only key in the back of each book. Reproducible for single family use. Approximately 35 pgs, pb.

Category Description for Straight Forward Math Series:

It can be difficult to find supplemental practice or alternative instruction for some higher-level math topics, especially trigonometry and calculus, but these clean, uncluttered and "straight-forward" workbooks do the job nicely. Each workbook is divided into chapters on broad topics (like matrices), which are broken down further into parts which focus on more specific topics (like the determinant for 2x2 matrices). Each part includes a short lesson on the concept, followed by example problems which are solved in a step-by-step manner with explanations. Example problems are followed by a set of exercises for the student to complete on their own. You will probably want to work out the problems on a separate sheet of paper, since little room is typically provided with the exercises and the books are not reproducible. An answer key is provided in the back of each book, which features answers to exercises and any reviews included (answers only, not detailed solutions). A cumulative review is included in every book except for Calculus AB Volumes 1 and 2 to ensure that the concepts have been mastered. For the price, these are excellent supplements to higher-level math topics where the textbook is not providing adequate explanation or practice. - Jess

When I first saw this game I thought to myself "Wow! That sounds similar to the Ravensburger games from Germany that I used to play as a very young child!" When I opened the box I discovered that it IS by Ravensburger! I am so happy to see these types of games become available in the states I chose this game with my 3-year-old daughter in mind Instead of focusing on numbers (which takes so much effort that it is impossible for her to keep up with her older brothers) this focuses on color recognition The snails are fairly large and easy to grab and move so that her developing fine motor skills don't become a frustration The rules are simple enough that this is also a great game for all three kids to play on their own with minimal chance of tears or "So-and-So isn't playing right!" complaints The spin of 'voting' for one of the snails to lose also takes the focus off of winning in the traditional sense and helps the players relax and enjoy the experience of playing together I'm glad that I added this to our game collection especially for the sake of boosting my young daughter's confidence in playing games with the family!
