Category Description for Abeka Math:

Although new to our catalog, this math curriculum is certainly not new to the homeschool community. Abeka has been a tried-and-true math program amongst homeschoolers for many years. Taking a traditional, spiral approach, this series presents math concepts at the simplest level and builds on those concepts each year while offering continual review so students can fully grasp the concepts being taught. Abeka also teaches math from a faith based worldview and integrates biblical application throughout the program.

The elementary math lays a solid foundation for the higher level mathematics, and emphasizes oral and written drill. For the younger grade levels, the lesson instruction includes visual aids, games and activities. As the grades progress, the lessons become more independent but are still teacher directed. For Kindergarten, a worktext and teacher key is available along with several manipulative components. Math kits for grades 1-6 are sold in a child and parent kit (each sold separately). The child kit includes the consumable worktext and a test/speed drills book. The contents of the parent kit vary depending on the grade level; however all will include a curriculum guide for lesson plans as well as answer keys for the worktext and test/speed drills. It is suggested to purchase both the student and parent kits for a full math curriculum. The curriculum guide incorporates flashcards/charts into some of the lessons. These are available to purchase separately.

Junior high moves toward Intermediate Mathematics and PreAlgebra. Worktexts at these levels are still consumable. Intermediate Mathematics is a new and improved seventh grade course, reviewing all math skills previously learned while introducing algebra and geometry. This new course focuses more on understanding the concepts rather than just memorizing. The Intermediate Kit includes the worktext and test/quiz book. A teacher edition, solution key, supplemental exercises book and key are all available for this level. The newly revised PreAlgebra text continues with review and bridges the gap between basic mathematical concepts and more advanced topics. This level has a worktext, quiz/test book and key, teacher edition, and solution key.

High school levels include Algebra 1 through Precalculus. Concepts are taught in a clear, logical order with detailed explanations and step-by-step examples. Student textbooks are non-consumable at this level. Each section has practice problems taught in that section and review problems from previous sections. A teacher edition (to help guide your student through the courses), solution key, quiz/test book and key are also available for each course.

Abeka Math is a solid, traditional math program with a biblical focus. Each year builds upon the previous while continuing to review. The math facts are drilled and mastered at the elementary levels so students can be confident and successful in subsequent levels. The review can move rather quickly; therefore if your student is moving into Abeka from another program, you should consider taking a look at the scope and sequence before deciding where to start in the series.

How do you know what parts you will need for one school year? Particularly the America's Story. Will I need all 4 parts or just 1?
User on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: V1 has plenty of content for a complete school year. Especially if You get the workbook to go with it. It gives reinforcements and provides activities as well. Unless your child is a super fast reader then you could probably do 2 volumes in one year. With all the other subjects we do, v1 was suffient.
Does this include geography or map studies at all?
A shopper on Jun 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It does a little bit. Here is some info regarding that, taken from the introduction of the teacher's manual:

"Many of the lessons in this book have geographical locations included in the story. These locations are underlined, so have your globe or world map on hand so that you and your children can find them after you finish reading. You may also want to include simple map skills. By simply including the geographical information into your conversation, you can familiarize your children with geographical terms. For your convenience, I have included a short list of geographical terms and their definitions in the back of this book."

There are also 4 map projects to be completed over the year, each project taking a few weeks to complete.

Gives us freedom
We are really enjoying this history program. Each lesson is just a few pages, which you can choose to read in one sitting or more. After the lesson the students do the journal or some other project related to what we studied throughout the week. This program guides me along and yet I have the freedom to teach in the way I love. I get books from the library for each lesson. The children color, write, draw and make models after we have read the lesson and some extra books. The history book does not tell you what to do although the student journal does give a few ideas.

A Living History Of Our World is written in a tone that my children enjoy Its a pleasure to read and listen to leaving us always wanting more The book and journal should not be sold separately in my opinion because together they make a complete program The Student Journal is a notebooking journal with a timeline project map projects optional 6 week reviews that include hands-on activities and dramatic play as well as more in-depth writing for review There are pages to color word puzzles extra topics to research and a place in the back for older students to dig deeperThe book is beautifully illustrated with hand drawings using colored pencils Even though her tone is surprisingly neutral there is a note to parent at the end of chapters with controversial figures or topics letting the parents know why she has chosen to leave this or that out or include something else It is a true open-and-go program with no preparation work required There are no special trips to the library for a book I cant find no running to the craft store for some obscure craft I will end up throwing away no endless copying of papers for my children to have something to do The Student Journal makes the History program; period If you skip this to save money you will be disappointedMy oldest daughter asks to do History every single school day It is her favorite subject That right there is proof enough for me
