Montessori-based Multisensory program ShillerMath

Not just another math program; this one is different. ShillerMath is a Montessori-based, multisensory curriculum for grades PreK to 7th which meets all NCTM standards. "What is Montessori?" you may be asking yourself. It is a method of educating children that stresses development of a childs own initiative and natural abilities, and the role of physical activity in absorbing abstract concepts and practical skills. But dont panic, no Montessori or math knowledge is required to use this curriculum, and there is little to no preparation for the lessons.

ShillerMath incorporates an incremental spiral approach (which guarantees plenty of practice) into their math program along with a 3-step presentation of concepts. The three steps are: "This is" "Show me" and "What is" Parents use this process developed by Dr. Maria Montessori to ensure that the child understands each concept. The example given for this in the Parent Guide is for teaching two-digit numbers:

Step 1: The parent says while pointing to the numbers, "This is 10, this is 11, this is 12."

Step 2: The parent leaves all three numbers out and says without pointing, "Show me 12; show me 11; show me 10."

Step 3: The parent points to one of the numbers and says, "What is this?"

The Lesson Books provide lessons which are colorful, easy to implement, and take an age-appropriate amount of time: 15 minutes for four year-olds, 20 minutes for 5 year-olds, 25 minutes for 6 year-olds, 30 minutes for 7 and 8 year-olds, and 30-45 minutes for children 9 to 12 years old. Each lesson begins by stating the objective, manipulatives needed, the learning style to which the lesson appeals, and whether the page is consumable.

Student Paced Math Instruction

Instruction is scripted and diagrams, drawings, and illustrations are provided for clear teaching of concepts. There is no set time per lesson or for the number of lessons per day. Each child is different and the child should set the pace according to their learning ability and skills. A Quick Start Guide is printed in the front of the Lesson Book which gives options for use and tips to reduce frustration for the student and the parent.

The Answer Guides include the pages from the Lesson Book with the answers printed in color. A Completed Work Sheet chart provides space for tracking completed lessons, lessons to revisit, and minutes worked on each lesson. This is found in books 1-3. A Review Test Scoresheet allows space at the back of the ShllerMath Answer Guide in Books 1-3 to track test scores and lessons to be revisited and is provided separately for books 4 and up. Additional sheets can be purchased for additional students or they are included with the consumable downloads available with each kit.

ShillerMath Teacher Guide

A 15-page Parent Guide tells you how to get started with ShillerMath, how the program works, how to build confidence in your child, and much more. This booklet even offers an explanation of parent responsibilities within the parent-child relationship.

Math songs available

ShillerMath songs are included in each kit or can be purchased separately. Each cd includes 25 original math tunes by Ron Brown of IntelliTunes. Listen to the songs in conjunction with the lesson while riding in your car, or while the kids are playing. I will say that the tunes are catchy, lively and upbeat and I caught myself singing them later in the day. They teach concepts such as the power of ten, counting by 2s, 4s, 5s, and mass on Volume I and fractions, negative numbers and square roots on the Volume II CD.

Shiller Math is the perfect place to begin math instruction for a child

The Beginner Base 10 Workbook is for the young child who wants to begin math, but isnt quite ready for Book 1 in this program. This book provides children with a complete and solid understanding of the decimal system. It introduces them to numbers in a very concrete manner using a multisensory approach, yet there are no manipulatives to purchase.

Power Solids Activity Guide and Fractions Quick Study Guide arent required to complete the ShillerMath program; however they are an excellent supplement to be used as a reference or for the student who loves the geoshapes and/or fractions and wants a little extra practice.

Help your student master math concepts

The goal of this math program is for students to speak and write mathematics clearly, accurately and concisely, and to achieve a solid understanding of math concepts. It seems Mr. Shiller had the right idea as he thought about how children learn and the best way for them to understand math concepts. As children hear the lessons and songs, play with manipulatives, and see the concepts applied, they can truly learn math in a way which would make Dr. Montessori smile.

My 7 year old daughter has Down Syndrome. We homeschool and have had success with the Montessori Method in the past. I am hopeful this will give her a more concrete grasp of an otherwise very abstract concept for her.

My very active 6 year old is doing well on this program. Combination of short lessons and hands on is much easier on both of us.

Great program as long as all materials included.
Love the program and material - however the shapes included are not enough to perform tessellations and other activities we ran into this problem several times . Needed 12 triangles to tesselate the rectangle in the book but only 8 were included in the kit. Also book one was a reprint bc of changes to the curriculum and the binding fell apart about 4 weeks into the school year. We didn’t really need Book 1 could be an issue for those using it for longer periods of time. No fault of Rainbow Resource - this was likely a Shiller oversight. Great program - captures all learning styles and I loved the gentle repetition. Perfect for Montessori style or those with learning difficulties.

Helps parents learn how to bridge the gap between public school and homeschool!
My child went to a public kindergarten, and when she discovered that you could homeschool at the end of the school year, she insisted firmly that this is what she wants to do going forward. I spent the following summer researching what approach we wanted to use, and I honed in on the century old Montessori method. I spent a lot of money acquiring manipulatives and Montessori albums, but still felt like I didn't have it all.

What I struggled with the most was trying to figure out how to continue her math education after a year in a common core program. After a semester of flailing, I decided to reassess my approach. I researched ShillerMath and was drawn to the hands on multi sensory approach and especially wanted to try the diagnostic testing that allows you to figure out EXACTLY where my child is in maths. The diagnostics are incredibly easy to administer and then you punch it into their lesson planner, then you get a print out of what lessons to start with! This is so incredibly helpful, that I wanted to cry! We jumped right in and enjoy our half an hour a day of math activities. I like the scripted lessons a lot more then I want to admit and I like that the kit blends well with the Montessori decimal materials I already have.

Each lesson is cross indexed and easy to reference. When my child pulls out a material and wants to use it, all I have to do it take a quick scan of the material index and quickly turn to an interesting activity!

The peace too I have gained from knowing I have everything I need right in the box has saved me a lot of time looking online for Montessori materials at an affordable price. I definitely recommend that the money you invest in ShillerMath Kits are well worth it, especially considering that they can all be used with multiple children at different children. I have two, so that means that five years times two kids divided by $350 = $35 a year per kid! Not bad for an all inclusive, out-of-the-box math program!

I cannot say enough good things about the Shiller math kit My daughter is seven and is finishing the second grade I have been homeschooling her from day one I have to admit that I ended first grade in tears I thought I couldn't do it anymore because I was a bad teacher and I didn't know where I was going wrong My daughter had holes in her math education that I didn't know how to fill I would try to go from one math rule to the next with paperwork etc Then I found this kit This kit is perfect! It's easy to use and best of all there are reviews that you give your child and if they have a question they don't know the answer to it tells you exactly which lessons to go back over so that they CAN understand it They lessons incorporate every learning style so my verbal 7 year old daughter loves it and so does my active 5 year old son as well as my 3 year old daughter! They love it so much that they will fight over who gets to do math first I wish I had known about this kit when my daughter was in kindergarten - I would never have bought any other one! I know this is expensive at first glance but this kit is so worth it! I KNOW which concepts my daughter is getting and how to fill in the gaps and the peace of mind that gives me is amazing The fact that I have four children and the fact that I will be able to use this for all of them makes this kit worth it's weight in gold to me - and it's a heavy box:)

Having used Singapore maths till my daughter was in 3rd grade and then ShillerMath till she's now in 5th grade I have to report that I prefer ShillerMath for its clear progression for being fun and interesting and for being a program that children can do independently from about 3rd gradeAbove all it really explains things nicely whereas the Singapore didn'tThough it seems pricey you get three/four years at a time and with four kids the kits are less than buying all the Singapore textbooksAll four kids are using ShillerMath now -- my 4-year-old and 6-year-old are doing Book 1 together my 8-year-old is storming through Book 3 and my 10-year-old is just about to complete Book 5I especially like it because it covers all the learning styles and follows a very sound Montessori-based method of 1) explain the concept 2) review the concept 3) have the child explain the concept

My 11-year-old son with Down syndrome really struggles with math and I struggle as his teacher The last couple years math hasn't been fun for either of us I have managed to teach him some basic math functions but he still seems to lack a true understanding of numbers About 6 weeks ago I noticed Donna's ShillerMath review on the Rainbow homepage I was very intrigued It sounded very different from how I had been teaching math And quite honestly that was a good thing What I had been doing hadn't been working I was very open to trying something newMy son just completed his first ShillerMath Review Test today I would love to be able to tell you that he passed with flying colors and all of our math struggles are behind us but that isnt realistic What I am so excited about is that I have a clear idea of what he understood in math the last few weeks which was quite a lot and the areas we need to revisit I have a clear teaching plan of attack and thats something I havent had with math in a long time When you start the Shiller Program with an older remedial student you can choose to do diagnostic testing to see where they fit in In our case I felt like my son had so many holes in his understanding of math that it would just be better to start at the beginning That way we wouldnt miss anything like we had in the past and he would have some opportunities for success ShillerMath is a Montessori math program Very different from any other program I have tried It is very visual and tactile Which is perfect for my special needs child The first thing you do each lesson is put down the math mat Its a white mat that comes with the kit Right away the childs focus is drawn to whats on the mat Each lesson is a small bite of information The next lesson will then seem completely different Were still in review mode so we can cover 2 or 3 lessons a day Since the lessons are all so different my sons interest is maintained for the whole session Also the lessons are ed so that makes it a lot easier for me At the top of each lesson it begins by telling you the objective of the lesson the manipulatives needed the learning style addressed and if there are consumable materials Its so easy to put a lesson together and then you just follow the I was used to math being taught as concepts When one concept is finished you move on to the next The problem with that is what if the child didnt understand that concept? Shiller doesnt work that way It seems to jump around but really youre building a foundation After a while you start to see how those small bites of information come together for the child to gain better understanding If the child has trouble with a lesson you go back to it from time to time until the child has closure That way nothing is missed and youre not doing the same thing over and over to the point of frustration So if youve read this far youre probably thinking it sounds great but what about that price Ouch! It is a big expense at first but if used for the full 3 to 5 years (the kit includes 3 student and 3 teacher books) then it really it isnt too bad I hate to think what Ive spent the last 3 to 5 years on curriculums workbooks manipulatives and games I expect ShillerMath to be my last big math expense for a long long time!
