Publisher Description:

Finally, your teens will write without dread!

Have they almost given up on writing? Do they reach for the tissue box when you say, "Write an essay"? Do you worry they won't be ready for high school or college writing? Do they say they think of things to write but can't write them down?

With THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS: WRITING NONFICTION IN HIGH SCHOOL, 2ND EDITION, they'll learn essay writing in a relaxed, nonthreatening atmosphere with a little humor thrown in.

This 2ND EDITION includes proofreading marks and exercises, a new chapter on common grammar mistakes, and numbered lessons to easily keep track of daily lessons.

This course teaches your teens what they need to know for high school and will be prepare them for college writing: persuasion, compare-and-contrast essays, literary analysis, a research paper with MLA documentation, and much more. In addition, students will learn how to write description and narration essays.

Beginning writers will feel safe, and advanced writers will enjoy Digging Deeper lessons.

Written by the same author who wrote JUMP IN, Apologia's popular middle school writing curriculum, this course is the natural next step for those who value college-preparatory material presented in incremental steps with a conversational tone.

Sharon Watson has the knack of teaching students with no prior writing experience in the same class with advanced writers. She knows when to introduce new material and how to keep it interesting. Both reluctant and eager writers will benefit from the way she reveals exactly how the "magic trick" of writing is done!

With over 100 daily lessons and complete instructions for 22 essays and reports, this is an engaging course students will enjoy--or not dread. And, more good news: the course is written to the student and almost teaches itself. Really.

Because writers come in all varieties, this course begins with basic writing skills so that inexperienced writers can catch up quickly on fundamentals, and then it smoothly merges them with their age-mates. More advanced writers will enjoy the Digging Deeper lessons designed specifically for them. New and seasoned writers will gain a confidence that comes from success.

Perfect for homeschools, co-ops, and private schools. Contains some Christian-based material.

My high schooler is a very reluctant writer and reviews assure me that this will at least help him get the basics. My secret desire is that he will come out the other side enjoying the art of writing. A homeschool mom can dream.

I used this with my two older kids the past two years. I really thought it was great. I'm back to buy it for my three younger kids (grades 9-11). I've been through many different writing curriculums in the past 16 years. It says a lot that I'm buying again!

This looks like a program that is simplified and easy to follow. It appears to be appropriate for the non-enthusiastic writer.

Best writing curriculum out there! Very easy to use even for self-study by student, without group support. It's inexpensive, yet it's comprehensive, complete, well-written, captivating to its readers.

I feel that I need help with teaching writing and evaluating writing. It seems we have some gaps. I read about this on a homeschool forum and I looked over a student copy as well as a teacher's addition. I am excited to get started with this in our home.

Great for step by step instruction. Very thorough. Only downfall was my son thought it was too wordy. He dislikes reading and skim reads for facts. I didn't think it was too wordy at all.

My 11th grader is a good writer but not a confident one. She asked me to find her a writing program that would teach her to write "the right way." After previewing a variety of programs, this one looks like it will engage her the best.

Has this course been edited to correspond with the college boards recent decision to eliminate the essay from the SAT?
A shopper on Nov 6, 2021
BEST ANSWER: This course does not mention the SAT. It covers the material that a freshman level student show know. It teaches opinion, persuasion, compare/contrast, biographical, definition, description, narration, and personal narrative essays. It reviews plagiarism, proofreading, and common grammar mistakes. It introduces literary analysis, newspaper writing, letter writing, and email etiquette. Sharon Watson writes to the student. She is thorough, unabashedly Christian, and very funny. I am using this text to teach a homeschool coop class of 20 ninth graders.
Does this course teach a student how to write a personal essay?
A shopper on Aug 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it goes over how to write personal narratives, opinion papers, persuasive essays including how to use logic to persuade, letters and emails, devotionals, biography, newspaper stories, compare/contrast papers, literary analysis, descriptive essays, and editing your work.
Do you need to buy the teacher guide?
User on Jul 6, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It might depend on how comfortable you are with the subject. The Teacher's Guide lays out the framework, objectives, and progression of the course; it gives tips on evaluating and grading; it contains a year's worth of writing prompts; and it includes the lesson-by-lesson answer key and teaching notes that correspond to the student text. Personally, I typically prefer to use the Teacher's Guide for the convenience of the answer key and teaching notes.
If this course does not cover all material a student should know to be prepared for college, as one of the Q&A states, what other courses do you recommend that do this?
A shopper on Jul 6, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Primarily, you would need a research writing course/experience. You could take a look at:

Writing a Research Paper: Step-by-Step
https://www.rainbowresource.com/category/197/Writing-the-Research-Paper-A-Step-by-Step-Approach.html

OR

This little gem from Christian Liberty Press - https://www.rainbowresource.com/product/005494/Writing-a-Research-Paper-Second-Edition.html?
Does this course cover research writing? How about paragraph writing?
A shopper on Jul 6, 2021
BEST ANSWER: This course assumes your student has had some experience and training in paragraph writing. If not, you might want to take a look at the author's other beginning writing program - Jump In!

This course does not cover research writing, per se, although some of the writing skills needed for research writing is covered in the expository writing section. However, research skills are not covered.
Hey, does this course thoroughly prepare my student for college level writing?
A shopper on Jul 1, 2021
BEST ANSWER: This course is definitely covering the topics and skills which are the foundation of college level writing. The coverage of persuasive writing topics and skills is very thorough and well done. There are a collection of other writing skills covered, as well. However, this course does not really address research writing and experience/training in that area would be needed to be "thoroughly prepared" for college level writing.
Is this a workbook? Would each of my kids need a copy or can multiple students use it?
User on Aug 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hmm, that's a good question. It's not a typical full-pg-of-work workbook;it is more like a (softcover) student text with questions scattered in the lessons. If it is going to be read aloud then work could be done on separate paper (there isn't room or lines for answers anyways) but it is very handy to have the text available to the student to look back and see how/what the author is teaching. BTW: we liked this book very much! (Spoiler alert - as a 'teacher' the correcting is very open-ended, i.e., I still have to figure out how to correct the writing assignments (a guide for each assignment is given; I still struggle with grading content.)

Great step-by-step writing process book!
I highly recommend this book. It teaches many types of writing, but breaks it down in bite-size lessons that aren't overwhelming for a reluctant writer. Each chapter covers a different type of writing your student may do. It has lessons on using logic when writing persuasive essays and goes through literary elements/ terms when teaching how to write a literary analysis of a novel. It also discusses editing and proofreading.

So glad we used this material in 10th grade. Very comprehensive
Very readable & enjoyable lessons for the student. Detailed instructions for both student and teacher. Each unit includes required exercises and often required essays. Contains 19 units: I usually planned a new unit every 2 weeks, but a couple were shorter. You will want to purchase the teacher's guide for grading.
