Category Description for American Language Series:

Many homeschoolers will recognize this program from Mile-Hi by Guyla Nelson. It has two basic components: Phonics & Reading and Spelling, Writing, & Vocabulary. These are designed to be used together, one reinforcing the other. This is a traditional, biblical, teacher-directed program with carefully laid out lessons. It covers all of language arts for kindergarten, including handwriting. Complete teacher materials, including Teacher Handbooks, lesson plans, and phonics songs are contained on a USB flash drive. Handbooks are in .pdf format and can be read and/or printed using Adobe Acrobat. The manuals are quite meaty at 268 pgs. (Spelling, Writing & Vocabulary), 420 pgs. (Phonics & Reading), and 510 pgs. (Phonics & Spelling). Song format is compatible with itunes or Quicktime. Software for playing these is available via free download from Adobe or Apple. Unless you can be at your computer while teaching, you will probably want to print out the lessons and download music to your mp3 music player. An abbreviated Phonics and Reading Guide (very abbreviated) is included also, but this is not enough to teach from. All of the student materials, however, are printed and in full-color. There are four worktexts - two for each component - and six paperback readers. Student materials are hefty as well; workbooks vary between 160 and 230 pages apiece; readers are thick with the first a mere 96 pages and the rest over 170 pages each. This is among the most comprehensive programs available both in terms of content and material.

Lesson plans are very detailed, telling you exactly what to do. They include a content overview, list of materials you'll need, teaching tips, and activities (step by step instructions for teaching the lesson). This will be a tremendous help to busy mothers or those without experience teaching reading. The coursework is fairly serious and rigorous, but student pages look inviting. Letters and their sounds are introduced in an order that allows students to begin reading and writing words almost immediately. By the second lesson, they are writing 'loll' and identifying words that begin with lo (short o) like 'lock' and 'lobster'. The rest of the letters are introduced in this order: i, d, a. c, t, e, f, u, v, w, s, h, n, r, m, b, j, x, g, y, p, q, k, z. Following this, consonant digraphs and blends are introduced, then consonant substitutes (silent letters), silent e, controlled-vowels, vowel digraphs and vowel digraph exceptions, diphthongs and diphthong exceptions. As sounds are learned, they are practiced and reinforced by reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. This program is very thorough and will give your child a solid foundation in language. Components are also available separately.

We have used one of these books with a child in our family and it was a great help for reading fluency. We want to have more options for my emerging readers now.

We are members of Classical Conversations and this series came recommended by that organization. I have a 5-year-old boy and I have used the Sonlight Fun Tales with his 4 older brothers as they have learned to read. I'm looking to use this series to increase my current Kindergartener's reading ability with interesting and colorful stories which build on each other.

I really like the little patriot series that I used when my kids were little and I can no longer find the whole. These look about the same and my granddaughter needs a good set of learning to read books and so I choose these. These look like they will be great.

These authors have written readers with engaging stories using varied vocabulary with as many letter sounds the child has learned. Practicing reading in this context gives the early reader a lot of success, building their confidence and making them excited about reading!

Charlotte Mason curriculum approved readers - these are simply fantastic. Simple and lovely illustrations with interesting reading.

I love that my littles can sit and read stories easily and practice what they are learning without hard words mixed in that frustrate them.

Great beginner reading stories that are beyond bob books. Children believe they are reading real stories vs choppy phonics books.

Is the content secular?
A shopper on Jun 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, this is written from a Christian perspective. One of the stories in the early readers is called “Sin” and talks about how sin makes God, Dad, Mom and me sad. Great resource for instilling biblical values in our emerging readers.
Does this include only the readers?
User on May 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it is only the readers. They are wonderful readers.

Useful and fun!
This set of books has really been helping instill the phonics lessons I’ve been trying to teach him. They’re also helping him love reading!

Great purchase!
This series is working well for my struggling reader. It has a lot of repetition (like Dick and Jane books) yet it goes slow enough for the student to practice the concept well before moving on (ex: was). We are using it in coordination with The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. They both follow the same pattern of simple short sounds, consonant clusters, silent e, etc through the beginning - middle of the books. I am pleased I bought this series. It is way better than using bob books and trying to part and piece things together that my son can practice all by myself.

Love this series...
This series goes hand and hand with the phonics pathways I use. Each book is designed to cover specific phonics rules for reinforcement with what we’re learning in or daily reading lessson. I hope they come out with books for that 8 yrs and up age group.

So Much Better Than Bob
I'm using these on three of my children simultaneously and I find them to be fantastic. Lots of good repetition, new sounds are introduced slowly, and there kids are all interested. I used Bob books to supplement my reading lessons previously and they are overpriced and lacking content. I highly recommend this series.

Just what I was looking for
I love that these books work on one concept at a time and give plenty of repetition to allow my child to really learn it before moving on. Each story is very short, allowing for short young attention spans and gives a sense of accomplishment. The illustrations are engaging too. I highly recommend these books.

We love these readers They progress along with the curriculum to give practice with the new phonics lesson and review those that have already been learned The typeset print uses a true manuscript letter "a" This is great for learning to read with every "a" learned exactly the same throughout the curriculum Most programs offer readers with a typed "a" that looks more like a lowercase "e" than an "a" If you are teaching a child who gets confused by a standard type "a" you will really appreciate this feature Note: The reader covers do not show the manuscript "a"We found the teacher's manual very helpful as the reading assignments are planned to reinforce phonics lessons learned I used this with my 1st two children then passed it on to a fellow home schooler before I realized I would have more children I could not find this series when it was time to teach my 3rd child and we struggled through several other programs This is the best phonics program I have seen and we have been so relieved to find it again! It is easy to follow very thorough and won't leave any "holes" in your child's reading education It is definitely worth the price Some may want to stretch this program out over 2 years
