Product Description:

This book could make a wonderful art program for younger students, incorporating both art appreciation and projects in a beautiful, easy to use format. The book features 22 impressive works of art from around the world and from a variety of periods. Each work is shown on a spread of pages along with a few short, interesting paragraphs of information about the work itself, the techniques used, and the artist who created it. Then you flip the page to see how you can imitate that work and style using simple materials and methods. For example, the first work highlighted is Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." After looking at the painting and reading about it, you turn to the next page, which has step-by-step directions to help you make your own swirly landscape using thick paints and a plastic fork. In six steps you go from drawing a simple landscape sketch, adding color, and using the fork to manipulate the paint into swirly patterns like those found in Van Gogh's painting. The end products are very attractive, and completing the projects will help students remember the distinctive styles of the artists they've studied. The projects pages are very colorful and offer beautiful illustrations of the finished projects to give students a visual aid. Throughout the 22 works/projects, students will be introduced to 3-D art, paintings, abstract art, prints, collages, Chinese brush painting, and other styles/types of art for a well-rounded but fun early art education. Fun art projects
Beautiful book. I enjoy the brief description of a piece of artwork, artist summary, and opportunity to create your own version. As a non-artists I wish there a little more information about the supplies.

A book with a plan that works :)
I am so impressed with the clarity and simplicity that these incredibly complicated works of art are presented so they speak to children. And then offering a way for us to create a similar art experience for a child, with supplies we might have at hand, is such a bonus. It turns art into a creative "you can express yourself just like Van Gogh or Kandinsky" process that is fun. I'm not an artist, but thank you for making this adventure easy and fun to introduce to my child.

Both art appreciation and hands-on art projects can be important and exciting elements of teaching art to young elementary age students While many books concentrate on one or the other The Usborne Art Treasury does a terrific job of combining picture study and creative art projects inspired by great art The book written by Rosie Dickins and designed by Nicola Butler also utilizes information and advice from art historians It includes a brief biographical introduction to 22 different artists and reproduces one famous painting from each of those artists After each artist/painting is introduced youll find a project inspired by the painting and style of the artist just presented For instance youll find a brief biography of Vincent Van Gogh and a full color reproduction of his painting Starry Night Then youll find a project called Swirly Landscape which encourages students to paint in a similar style to Van Gogh by using paint thickened with craft glue Students will create a landscape with painted swirls curves and lines scraped in paint with a plastic fork Each artist/project is given two full two-page spreads so young students can really see the artists work and then the sample art for the project Not all of the projects involve painting A variety of mediums and styles are utilized from chalk drawing to collage to mobiles to painting with ink Directions are clearly presented in a step-by-step format easy to follow even if you have no experience teaching art The materials required for the actual projects are almost all ordinary materials youll have on hand in your household or basic inexpensive craft supplies you can easily find At the beginning of the book theres a complete listing of all supplies you need to complete all of the projectsDuring first grade my daughter worked on projects inspired by Van Gogh Monet Degas and OKeeffe The book emphasizes modern artists including Picasso Klee Calder and Pollock and you will also find work here by Hokusai Rousseau Matisse and Whistler The book does a good job of including art from different cultures so youll find projects for African masks inspired by the work of unknown artists and ink paintings inspired by Chinese artist Shen Quan This is one of the best books Ive seen for combining elements of picture study and actual art projects Though the biographies are brief (youll want to build on them through other books and online sources) theyre well-done and the representative paintings are excellent choices The book is colorful bright and well designed In addition to our homeschool (where well continue to use it this year) we recently utilized some of the projects in a local arts camp for children ages 6-14 The Usborne Art Treasury is a definite treasure!
