Product Description:

Have you found yourself wishing that the information found in Story of the World was available for an older student, or maybe for yourself? Well, now it is! Corresponding to the time period covered by SOTW, Vol. 1 and written by Susan Wise Bauer in her highly readable style, this is a "grown-up" version suitable for older students and parents. Accompanying the text are maps and timelines, even a few photos. This book just begs to be read. I started reading the section on Spartacus and soon found myself enthralled with the details of the Gladiator Wars. ~ Janice

I love The Story of the World Elementary level books and I needed a little more for my middle school student. This looks perfect so the whole family can learn the same material this year, just with more detail for my older child.

I'm returning to homeschooling after years away, but my oldest learned elementary history using Bauer's 'Story of the World' books and supplemental materials. The first three of those were quite palatable, even for a kid who didn't particularly love reading. And my favorite was the first, Story of the Ancient World.

So now, of course, I turn to Bauer again. And conveniently for me, she has created higher level versions of her original series. I'm happy to give them a try.

I love ALL THINGS Susan Wise Bauer and since we're studying ancient history in Classical Conversations this year, this will be the perfect supplemental book!

My 9th grader will be using History of the Ancient World as the spine for her history study as recommended in The Well Trained Mind.

We are interested in adopting a new curriculum for 9th - 12th grade history. We are hoping that Susan Wise Bauer will complete the scope and sequence with a Modern World History text.

It was recommended by one of your specialists for my 9th grader who has a special interest in Ancient History. I am looking forward to reading it as well :)

Think history is boring and dry? You haven't read any of Susan Wise Bauer's books! Although I will use this for my high schooler, the truth is I bought this book for myself. It's one I will read and keep on the shelf as a reference.

We've used the SOTW series and found Susan Wise Bauer's writing to be an enjoyable walk through history so we decided to continue on.

We really enjoyed the style of Story of the World, and this is written the same way but for an older audience.

It is important that everyone know, and understand world history, but it doesn't have to be dry and lifeless as most history books read. Younger children have experienced history in chronological order with fun and excitement through reading Story of the World, and while it certainly has been beneficial for young adults, it lacked the deeper substance to captivate young ( and old ) adults. The author has filled that void with this series. SOTW just grew up!!!

BEST ANSWER: There has been at least one instance that has been brought to our attention. Accordingly, we have added a caution about "mature content" to our description.
Is this book written from a religious standpoint?

History of the Renaissance World
History of the Medieval World: From the Conversion of Constantine to the First Crusade
History of the Medieval World: From the Conversion of Constantine to the First Crusade
BEST ANSWER: While the author has a background in religious studies, (according to her website she holds "a Master of Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia"), the book itself is not religious in tone. She does explore the influence of various religions on the shaping of history, rather than avoiding the topic, but does so in an unbiased, factual manner.

Great continuation from Story of the World
I just started "Story of the World" with my daughters in K and 3rd grade and we love it. I needed a version for my 8th grader, so I bought this. From reading from the beginning, and skimming the rest, I think this will be great. It definitely has a more advanced level of writing than "Story of the World", but it feels similar in that it reads like a story being told, rather than a boring textbook. I like that it incorporates stories from the time period that help the reader understand the culture. I would say this will work well for advanced middle school students to high school and adults. (I'm looking forward to reading it myself.) The accompanying study guide I bought to go with it has good comprehension and critical thinking questions/essay prompts, too.
