Product Description:

Harness the amazing wall-climbing power of the Gecko! This kit can create a wide variety of robots, all centering around suction cups. The primary build, the Geckobot, can easily walk straight up any smooth, vertical surface (such as glass windows, plastic, whiteboards, or smooth drywall using the four included suction cups. Such movement is made possible with a combination of motors and air pumps, built into the Geckobot during construction. The 24-page, fully-illustrated manual teaches kids all about suction power and includes instructions for the Geckobot and 6 other experiment builds: an industrial robotic suction arm, suction tow truck, suction gun for picking up light objects, crawling inchworm, smartphone holder, and an ellipsograph that draws near-perfect circles. Other materials needed are AAA batteries for the motor and air pump, scissors, and other routine household materials. The Geckobot kit includes 176 pieces, with four suction cup pads, and is compatible with other Thames and Kosmos kits.

Publisher Description:

This astonishing wall-climbing robot has a motorized air suction system that enables it to walk vertically up and down perfectly smooth surfaces, like glass, plastic, whiteboards, and glossy laminates. The battery powered motor drives an innovative gear system that produces a rotating motion making the legs move back and forth and up and down, mimicking a real gecko so two of the feet are touching the wall while the other two feet are lifted off of the wall, in an alternating motion. At the same time, the gear system drives an air pump that sucks air inward at the two feet touching the wall while blowing air outward at the other two feet. In this way, two of the feet are always holding the model to the wall, while the other two feet are pushing off and stepping forward.

When the geckobot's tongue hits an object in front of it, it triggers the motor to go in reverse, thus causing the model to walk back down the wall. While the model walks, its head and tail move from side to side, resulting in an amusing and lifelike lizard model.

You can build six other models and conduct experiments with suction to learn about air pressure and the mechanical physics of this unique device. Build models of an industrial robotic arm with vacuum suction cup grippers, a car with suction cup wheels, an octopus with suction cup arms, a crawling insect, a window cleaning robot, and a vacuum holder device.

A 24-page, full-color manual guides you through model building with step-by-step illustrated instructions and provides scientific information and explanations.
