Category Description for Science by the Grade:

This series is designed to give a little extra help in elementary and junior high science. It can be used to introduce a topic, review a topic, or for extra practice in areas that are a problem. It can also be used for assigning questions and activities in the different topic areas. The books for every grade level are based on state and national standards and can be of help when preparing for the science section on standardized tests.

Each book is divided into 3 sections: physical science, life science, and earth & space science. An assessment test is included at the beginning of the book which your student should take before starting. This will help determine knowledge of content and where extra practice might be needed. Each book ends with ideas for science fair projects, a glossary of key terms, and an answer key.

Each lesson follows the same format. A list of key terms is given at the beginning of the lesson and then background information on the concept is presented in several small sections. A review exercise is given as multiple-choice questions in standardized test format. Specific activities, experiments, and puzzles add to the fun of learning the concept. There is a reading comprehension activity in which the student reads a passage and answers related questions. Student pages are reproducible for family or classroom use. A few extra pages of practice can sometimes make the difference in learning success. ~ Donna

I wanted a mixture of science topics rather than focusing on 1 topic throughout the year. The information looks bite size which for my son works best with ADHD.

The Steck-Vaughn texts are all of excellent quality. They have all the essentials of science no matter what the current standards are, they have them and they are easier for students to read while maintaining grade level curriculum.

I am a combination of Robinson, Classical and Unschooling for my home school program for my three children. There is a lot of science in the literature books they're reading but I wanted to make sure that we touched on the basic scientific concepts that they would be learning at traditional school so I added these.

Other than the initial assessment test given at the beginning, is there a test/quiz given at the end of each section or at the end of the book to show any mastery of the material?
A shopper on Sep 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, not an official test/quiz, but if your child can complete the numerous activities of all different types for each section, it will let you know that they have mastered it.

I really like that the pages are colorful and the information is written in a way that is easy to understand. The order is a bit off...let me explain: Each lesson is split into short segments but then the questions are not in the order they appear in the book. Like if they speak about solubility then density. The questions ask about density then solubility. I just give it to my daughter in order. Other than that it's a great book
