I love the way the poetry for young people books explain the poems. They also have vocabulary words defined that the kids may not know.

Helping a child learn to love and appreciate poetry can sometimes feel daunting Even if you love poetry yourself it can sometimes feel like a mysterious process to find creative ways to pass that love along Thats one reason Im so grateful for the Poetry for Young People series which provides such beautiful volumes to help parents and teachers in that process One of our familys favorites is the Emily Dickinson volume edited by Frances Schoonmaker Bolin and illustrated by Chi ChungThe once reclusive Dickinson is now considered one of Americas best loved poets Many of her poems are short but her skillful and sophisticated use of language especially metaphor does not always make them easily accessible to children While some of her poems engage topics that might feel heavy there are a number of lighter brighter poems that focus on nature and the outdoors One of the best elements of this particular collection is how well-chosen the poems are: they seem just right to engage children in the mid-elementary years (and beyond) Youll find some classic and perhaps familiar Dickinson favorites here such as Hope is the thing with feathers I Dwell in Possibility and There is no frigate like a book There are also some lesser known but engaging poems that caught my young daughters attention and imagination and isnt that what we hope poetry will do? We especially enjoyed the seven riddle poems poems in which Dickinson describes something ordinary and every-day but never names it specifically The pictures on those pages help provide good visual cluesThese are also wonderful poems to help train the poetic ear Dickinson loved simple repetitive meter akin to hymnody so a number of these poems will be easy for a child to memorize Chi Chungs beautiful old-fashioned illustrations add much charm to the book The page design is lovely throughout with delicate blue borders encasing pictures and text Dickinsons sophisticated vocabulary can be challenging for adults as well as children and some of the less common words are defined in smaller type at the end of the poems there if you need them helpful but not distracting The book also includes a well-written four page biography of Dickinson written in an age-appropriate way I would highly recommend either reserving the biography or going back to it after engaging children in reading hearing and enjoying the poems They will likely enjoy it and understand it more by then I cant say enough good things about this lovely book and the series its a part of The very reasonable price of this lovely paperback also makes it an excellent choice
