Description

A non-traditional approach to learning nonfiction composition, this curriculum is chock full of information to help the student learn the craft well. Though small the book is surprisingly thorough covering the usual essays, research papers, and writing for business projects such as resumes, proposals, and expository business letters. There are sections that cover how to edit writing, as well as adding clarity and developing a writing style. The learning guide makes self-paced instruction a practical reality, which is the intention. The checkpoint exams in this course are mostly focused with identifying components within the student's writing. After reviewing this material, I like what I see, and think it would work nicely as part of a high school English course. ~Judy

Publisher's Description of Writing Nonfiction: A Simple, Clear Approach for High Schoolers Set

Just as the painter may capture a scene in a striking, unique and beautiful way, so can a writer capture reality in a way that is unique and creative--even inspiring. Whether you are writing essays, reports or research papers; articles, blogs or proposals; biographies, can autobiography or a book; here is a simple, clear approach to writing nonfiction.

With twenty-two short chapters and an extensive reference section, this inviting handbook includes everything you need to learn to say the things you want to say clearly and effectively.

Its four accompanying learning guides cover the process of writing a paper; word use; sentence and paragraph structure; academic essays, reports and research papers; and tools to make writing clear and effective.

The writing curriculum offered by Heron Press emphasizes a self-paced mastery approach to learning grammar and composition. While not a heavy writing or grammar course, it seems to be very well-designed. The straightforward way the materials are presented alongside the course learning guides should permit most students to complete the program on their own. The publisher also has a Public Speaking Course (#035125) that compliments the series. Most sets include a student text, workbook, learning guide, exams and exam guides, and a materials list. While most of the learning guides are printed simply on plain paper and stapled in the corner, they really do seem to be the hub of the curriculum, essentially serving as a lesson plan.

These books and materials are secular in focus and philosophy. The publisher is associated with L. Ron Hubbard, but we didn't see any overt evidence of religious content. This is a well-designed series, with an emphasis on simplicity and focusing on the message.
