Publisher Description:

Typing Instructor for Kids Gold is the most advanced Typing Program available. It presents Typing Instructor in full-screen size and rich color for the optimum Typing Instructor experience for kids. No other Typing tutorial is more entertaining and educational.

Get your kids to the head of the class as they learn to become Touch Typists on a motivating adventure on Typer Island. Kids start their journey in the Old West at Wild Bill’s Soda Shoppe. They’ll learn to conquer the a, s, l, and ; keys, take on typing lessons, challenges, and games. The Typer Island Adventure is packed with so much fun and motivation, kids forget they are learning to type. “Boring” is not a word you’ll hear as kids continue their Adventure in new lands, On the Water, In the Air, Over the Edge, and Under the Sea. Typing Instructor for Kids is the perfect typing solution for parents, too, as kids will not need help as they are guided step-by-step by Toby, a young boy, and his feathered-sidekick, Layfette. They help kids progress through the Adventure using just the keys they have learned.

Packed with Motivation

Kids are motivated to learn new keys, pass typing tests and complete challenges to earn coins, points, and jewels for their Treasure Chest. After completing typing activities in each land, the ultimate reward is reaching the Castle. Once at the Castle, kids become the ruler of Typer Island and embark on more adventures and games. The Castle’s secret passageway takes them to the Lost City, a mysterious underwater city, filled with surprises and a challenging underwater scavenger hunt game.

Explorer Isle Cave

Kids can take a break from their typing adventure at any time to explore Typer Island. The Cave on Explorer Isle has an awesome game room where kids can choose to play any of Typer Island’s games – except the exciting bonus games available in the Castle and the Lost City. They must reach the Castle to play those games. Kids can choose to take more lessons or challenges on Explorer Isle. They can also visit Story Lagoon and practice their skills by typing a favorite story from literature, such as excerpts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, a nursery rhyme, a classic book, or a fairy tale.

Adventurer Tools

Typer Island has a lot of Adventurer tools for kids to find their way around the Island. Aboard the Tour Ship kids can learn everything about Typer Island! A convenient Map Room helps kids see where they are on their Typer Island Adventure, where they are going next, and what keys they will learn. The Treasure Chest shows what new coins and points they have earned. Kids can display a variety of graphs in the Saved Results area to see their performance on all their typing activities; lessons, challenges, stories and even games. They can see their progress and the keys on the keyboard they need to practice.

Hours of Fun

Typer Island has unique games to keep kids interested in playing. This repetitive activity builds finger-to-key memory and before they know it, they are well on their way to becoming Touch Typists! Games can be played in a wide variety of ways; at varying levels of difficulty to keep kids interested in continuing to the next level. Games can be played with just the keys they have learned so far, or with all the keys on the keyboard.

Adventure Settings

There are a lot of choices on Typer Island. Kids can select English or Spanish and a Typing Plan that fits their skill level – there are 11 unique plans! They set their goal word per minute, which can be adjusted, if needed, at any time.

Category Description for Typing Instructor for Kids:

With a similar mix of lessons, tests, practice material, and games as Typing Instructor, this version is more accessible to younger kids and offers a fun, motivating and effective way to learn typing skills. There are currently two versions available: Gold and Platinum. Gold is the most updated version with enhancements in graphics, but very few content changes. Choose from Mac or Windows, CD-ROM or downloads. Please note system requirements under each item.

Typing Instructor for Kids features 160 touch-typing lessons which cover all the basic keys (letters, numbers, symbols) on either a standard or a split keyboard (except for the 10-key number pad). There are ten different typing plans to choose from, each geared to a different age group. Regardless of the plan they are following, each student learns the keyboard by taking a tour of "Typer Island" and visiting five different lands as they journey to the Castle. As students journey through Old West, On the Water, In the Air, Over the Edge, and Under the Sea, they'll learn new keys and complete exciting challenges (usually timed) like typing to shoot words out of the sky, racing a Viking ship by typing words as quickly as possible, and typing words printed on sharks before they eat you! The activities build upon each other so students can't move on until their skills are ready. The changes in scenery add a lot of variety to the lessons, but you can still rely on helpful features including visual instruction with the 3-D guide hands and keyboard. Accuracy and speed (WPM) are also tracked throughout, with students getting instant feedback on their performance, and earning rewards as well.

Of course, the arcade-like games will be the most fun to the beginning typist! The further students advance in the program, the more games will be available to them. Once they make it through all five lands, students capture the Castle, which opens the Lost City, a new addition to the program that provides two new games. While capturing the Castle and exploring the Lost City are the ultimate goals of the game, students earn treasures and points all through the program, which keeps them motivated and entertained. Students can also visit Explorer Isle at any point to play their favorite games (except for Lost City games), using only the keys that they have covered already. They can also visit Story Lagoon and practice typing one of 40 familiar stories, including fairy tales and classic literature. With this programs careful progression, interesting storyline, high-quality animation, 30+ games, multiple skill levels, and English/Spanish instruction, its no wonder it is the winner of so many prestigious educational awards. This one comes highly recommended, folks.

Someone recommended Typing Instructor to me. I hope that it will be a good product for my son to learn how to type. They earn chances to play games based on accuracy and the games help them to practice what they have learned.

I wanted something that would teach my kids the important skill of typing without me having to be right there next to them the entire time. This way, I can be working on Math or reading with one child while the other is doing typing on the computer.

Modern children need to know how to type as much as children of the past needed to know penmanship. We're still working on penmanship too, but typing is essential in today's world.

what platforms will this run in?
A shopper on Aug 12, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Our information from the supplier indicates that it will run on Mac OSX 10.4 or higher (including Snow Leopard). However, there is no information concerning Mac systems higher than Snow Leopard.
Does this progarm require an internet connection?
A shopper on Dec 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No it does not. It is recommended you register your product using the internet but that is not required in order for you to use it. My kids have enjoyed this and have grown in typing a lot- we love it!
will this product work with Mac Book Pro and Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.3?
A shopper on Apr 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I can’t speak to whether it will work with MacBookPro because we haven’t used it on a MacBook.

It has worked well on on our iMac w/external CD-Rom/DVD Apple drive, which we always updated to the latest OS system updates. Because both of my kids are now done using the typing instructor it hasn’t been tested on the update that came out within the last two weeks but because it was working on the version just before that I would imagine it would work well.

We have a Windows Laptop and it frequently froze up on that machine so we opted to purchase the external drive for the Mac and never had a problem with the software on the Apple.
My son will be six this year, and we are considering this typing curriculum. Does the program include anything that might be considered scary? He doesn't like ninjas, knights, dragons, monsters, battles, etc.
A shopper on Feb 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: My daughter used this when she was 8 without much oversight. I asked her for her opinion. She said nothing scary or any of the things you mentioned, but it does have a castle that acts like finish line as you complete parts of he program. HTH
is there a downloadable version? I don't have CD-Rom
A shopper on Jan 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Not that I have found except in apps that we downloaded onto our Mac. We bought an external cd drive for this software and a math program we use. My kids picked up on typing better with this software than with the app so it was worth it. Sorry I couldn’t help.
Can I use this for more than one student?
A shopper on Aug 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes! At the beginning you are able to add at least 4 to 5 different children and are able to set the difficulty per child! Then, when the child signs in, they just click their name and it will set to their particular progress, allowing each child to move forward at their own pace!
Does this work with MAC OS X El Capitan?
A shopper on Nov 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes.
Does this work with Windows 10.0?
User on Nov 4, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it works great! My kids have been using this program for the last two months with Windows 10 and haven't come across any issues.

This is a really great software to teach kids how to type It's so much more engaging and interactive than just using a book My 10 year old son is using this in our homeschool We both like the fact that he can just insert the CD-ROM listen to a few instructions and go One of the neat things about this program is that in the top portion of the screen will be the typing assignment (that highlights each letter as the child types it) then in the bottom portion there is an interactive illustration of a keyboard with moving handsshowing where to have the hands in "home row" and then what fingers to use to strike which keys Another thing I like is that the child has to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency before moving on to the next level At the end of each assignment your child gets a readout of their wpm and accuracy It's all done in a colorful and engaging format I highly recommend this software

My 6 year old loves this product He uses it on his laptop daily without prompting The correct keys light up on the screen to encourage the student to not look down at the keyboard He is learning very quickly and able to transfer this to proper keystrokes for the written portion of Rosetta Stone SpanishNo preparation is required on the parent's part I do glance at his hand and body position to ensure proper form You can check the progress the student is making on both speed and accuracyDefinitely worth the money Start early and teach them to type before bad habits form
