Publisher Description:

The Spanish for Children Primer A Program teaches upper-elementary students this dynamic language using the pedagogy and structure of our popular Latin for Children series combined with immersion-style dialogues and vocabulary. The Spanish for Children series emphasizes grammar and the parts of speech as vital tools for the correct speaking and understanding of Spanish. The texts also use lively chants to aid memorization of both grammar and vocabulary.

Spanish for Children Primer A (Student Edition) contains 37 weekly chapters, including 8 review chapters. Each chapter contains a memory page, a grammar page, a fun worksheet, and a quiz. Students will learn over 290 commonly used vocabulary words. The engaging and conversational text explains grammar concepts such as verb conjugation, tenses, and noun genders and helps teach students to construct Spanish sentences well. All teaching and explanation provided in the student edition is written at the student’s reading level.

A special note from Spanish for Children author Julia Kraut:

Our goal with the Spanish for Children series is to teach students "why." We focus on the rules that govern the language and spend a large amount of time comparing Spanish and English grammar. In many ways, this series doesn't teach just Spanish—it teaches how to go about learning a language in general. This is different from the "scenario-focused" approach of many other textbooks, where students learn vocabulary that relates to specific subjects and then learn to discuss those subjects. While students using SFC do memorize vocabulary each week, using groups of related words to talk about various subjects and scenarios is "the icing on the cake"—the "cake" being an understanding of the patterns of the Spanish language, and knowing which word belongs where and why.

This is a consumable item.

Category Description for Spanish for Children:

"Learn more than how to order a taco" with this great program. The Primers are divided into 32 weekly chapters, including 5 review chapters. Each lesson introduces new vocabulary words alongside a Spanish concept, starting with verbs and nouns in the first unit and moving on to number, gender, adjectives, pronouns, verb conjugations, and more. The lessons are short (about 4 pages each), plus weekly worksheets and quizzes. Lessons begin with Spanish phrases, a conversation, a chant (to aid memorization of grammar and vocabulary) and a vocabulary list. Then the lesson discusses the concept being taught, followed by short exercises and a quiz. Each level teaches 290 of the most commonly used vocabulary words in an engaging, conversational way. A helpful glossary is included in the back of the primer.

The pronunciation CD is no longer included with the text, but a complete MP3 file of all pronunciations can be downloaded at the publisher's website.

The Answer Key is a copy of the worksheet and quizzes in the Primer with the answers filled in (this book does not include every page from the Primer - only those with answers).

If the instructor is not familiar with Spanish, consider the DVD and Chant CD set, which features 4 DVDs with the author teaching the lesson to her students. Each lesson (approx. 15 min each) corresponds to the weekly chapter in the Primer, and text from the book appears on screen as the lesson is presented so you can follow along. The students chant their weekly grammar work, and vocabulary and visual images appear which correspond with the words. The audio chant CD includes grammar chart chants and complete vocabulary.

Picking up where Primer A left off, Primer B emphasizes grammar and the parts of speech as tools for understanding and speaking Spanish. Also included are expanded dialogs, stories, songs, and chants. Primer B contains 32 weekly chapters, including 6 review chapters and an end-of-book review. The text teaches 290 commonly used vocabulary words, plus a review of vocabulary from Primer A. Students will continue mastering grammatical concepts, such as verb conjugation, tense, and noun gender. Weekly worksheets and quizzes are included, and students will enjoy sharpening their Spanish with dialogs, stories, and a puzzle that involves searching for treasure in Mayan ruins.

We used Latin for Children by this company and it was great. The chant method is very effective. They also insert humor along the way. I found it very intriguing what humor does to the brain. It totally changes their attitude toward the subject matter in an amazing and powerful way. The DVD lectures are super helpful. I wouldn't buy any foreign language course that didn't offer lectures by a bilingual speaker.

We've done Song School Spanish 1 & 2 and are ready for the next thing. I speak Spanish and needed something we could do in about 15-20 min. for multiple grades. Song School Spanish has been a good fit.

Even though it says "children" I use it for upper Middle School and High School, because of the grammar and conjugating sentences is quite upper level. I combine this with a conversations piece with Spanish speaking individuals and study culture of Latin America and Spain to make it a full one year course.

We've been very happy with the Classical Academic Press products - we used all their Latin materials and did French for Children last year - this year we want to delve into Spanish!

Is this program secular?
A shopper on Feb 25, 2021
BEST ANSWER: This program does not include any specifically Christian content. Spanish words for "church" are included and I believe it talks about going to church in a conversation sentence, but otherwise there is nothing that would establish it as a "Christian" curriculum.
Are there mp3's available for download with this program?
A shopper on Aug 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The set that we carry provides DVDs. However, the pronunciation CD is no longer included with the text and a complete MP3 file of all pronunciations can be downloaded at the publisher's website.

Good program
It is a good solid program. I used this series to teach my girls and they learned as much as my high schooler who was doing a public school curriculum from an outside teacher. I gives good solid basics.

If your family is looking for a gentle entrance into learning Spanish you will want to explore Spanish for Children by Classical Academic Press A two-year curriculum Spanish for Children begins with Primer A the first year of study which contains 32 chapters 27 of them containing new material and 5 of them reviewListed for third grade and up one of the best elements about Primer A is that it can work for multiple ages The grammar concepts taught in the lessons are simple enough to serve middle elementary grades but can also be used as a quick review for middle grade or older students Students of all ages even including adults will enjoy chanting the weekly vocabulary which is presented initially on the DVD weekly lesson but is also on an accompanying CDThe DVD weekly lesson taught by a young and enthusiastic teacher presents 5-10 minutes of grammar material enough to teach a single important concept (such as verb endings gendered and numbered endings for nouns or definite and indefinite articles) but not enough to overwhelm the student The grammar lesson is reinforced in writing within the student text which presents the weeks vocabulary along with a handful of written exercises so the student can practice new skills Brief Spanish phrases and a simple Spanish conversation are also presented each week There is also a weekly quiz which can be graded or not at the teachers discretionBy far the most enjoyable and helpful element is the vocabulary and grammar chanting My audio-visual learning seventh grader who went into the course as a reluctant language learner loves these chants which are accompanied by creative (and sometimes memorable) photos on the DVD Most mornings she chants the weekly lesson vocabulary and some of the earlier lessons as well She is not only learning a good deal of Spanish (there are 290 common words presented in Primer A) but important grammar patterns that will serve her well as she continues her Spanish studies The chants are occasionally sung but more often just presented in a simple rhythm You and your family may find yourself murmuring things like la muchacha la muchacha young lady girl as you go about your daily activities! The full Primer A set comes with a teachers answer key in addition to the DVD and CD set the student text book and a fun reader called Tin Bot The reader available in hard copy or eBook is a spliced reader mostly written in English but with some Spanish scattered throughout
