All three components of the Homeschool Kit come softbound. The Student Edition Text uses a two-color page layout, as opposed to the black and white pages of prior editions. Solutions Manual contains solutions to all problems in the text and tests.

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

I love this math book series. Both of my children use them at Regina Caeli Academy. Each chapter builds slowing on the one before so after working for a few months on the chapters my children were able to do almost all the math questions on their own with a little guidance.

Saxon 7/6 Homeschool Kit + Saxon Teacher CD-ROM
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely, this is exactly what I did with my child. My son is naturally talented with math and I skipped the 8/7 series after finding many of the concepts redundant. We began the algebra 1/2 and it worked out excellently. I also bought the two cd series, the lesson teaching cd and the answer key walk along cd and wow how they amplified the lesson experience and cane to the rescue niece when there was a typo in the book (only one). So don’t worry at all.
Coming from Rod and Staff math 6th grade should we take Saxon 76 or Saxon 87- student does well in math just wants to be challenged a bit. Rod and Staff does not seem to introduce enough concepts- great for drilling arithmetic facts but not enough material to prepare for higher math. Or am I wrong? We thought of switching now so we can get used to the format through high school.

BEST ANSWER: I was in this same position when my son finished R&S level 6 math. My son took the Saxon placement test and scored borderline between 7/6 and 8/7. After asking on various forums he did 8/7. Saxon is similar to R&S I think. They are both rigorous and solid math curriculums. We switched because I planned to use Saxon for upper level mathematics up to calculus which R&S doesn’t do and I wanted him to be comfortable and familiar with the Saxon methods. He did great with 8/7. He also used Life of Fred prealgebra at the same time and loved it! It teaches the relevancy of math and makes it fun. As a side note, he is a math lover and I never have to help him or really check his work much.
We 'tried' public school for my 7th grader last year. I withdrew her because she was failing math (and too much drama). I filled in her "Math Holes" with Saxon and then started her on lesson 80 of Saxon 8/7. She then studied independently and ACED every single lesson thereafter! Super proud of her! So here's my question: Is pre Algebra necessary or can I go straight to Algebra 1? I wouldn't normally consider it but she got 100s on every assignment from Saxon 8/7 lessons 90-120! I even hid my grade book and watched her work a lesson, thinking she might have cheated! She sure wasn't! Just needed the right tools!

BEST ANSWER: The basic criteria we use is that a student needs to get at least 80-85% on all the tests following Lessons 80-120 of Math 8/7 in order to be comfortable in Algebra 1. It sounds like your daughter has met that criteria - and then some! Both of you should be proud!
My child is 14 and need a review of the basic math. Which book will cover important concepts needed before Agebra I?
A shopper on Aug 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Math 87 starts with a complete review of all basic math concepts - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. The first 80 lessons are mostly all review. Algebra concepts are introduced in the last 40 lessons.

It sounds as though Math 87 would be a good course for your child.
Do you need to purchase a teacher edition seperatly?
A shopper on Aug 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is no Teacher Edition for the Saxon Math 8/7 3ED level. The level consists of only a Student Textbook, Solutions Manual, and Tests & Worksheets book. The student teaches himself by reading the daily lesson in the Student Textbook. Answers can be checked in Solutions Manual. Tests and timed drills are in the Tests & Worksheets book.
My son just finished 6/5 with no problems. I've been told the 7/6 has a lot of review. Is it too big of a jump to go from 6/5 to 8/7?
User on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have used the Saxon Math homeschooling program for the last 16 years and I would never skip a book.
There is review on 7/6 as there is in all of them, but it won't be long before new concepts are introduced which will lead in to the 8/7 book.
Personally, I would be afraid my child may be lost beginning 8/7 without completing and mastering 7/6, which could result in frustration and then having to 'back track.' I know each child moves at a different pace, but I do not think you will be disappointed if you stay on course and move forward in Saxon order.
My son has just finished 6/5 and had no problems. I've been told that 7/6 has a lot of review. I don't want to buy a whole set if there is tons of review. Is going to 8/7 too big of a jump from 6/5? Is there a lot of review in 8/7 of 7/6?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: All Saxon has a lot of review. The usual jump year is after 8/7 to Algebra 1. I would get 7/6, and give him tests at where you think he's at. When he makes enough errors, say, 3...then jump start him in the book there. If he finishes early, due to starting further on in the book, just have him start on the next book. Having done Saxon 1/2 after 8/7, I would just skip that and go straight to Algebra 1. Mine was good at Math, but made careless mistakes, so I made him do it for honing his computation accuracy. That's the one that has the most rehashing. It has the pre algebra review, but nothing they can't pick up in straight Algebra 1. All Saxons start out with the rehash...it's just the way it is. I like it for that. Summer kills their brain cells - in a therapeutic way...but often they need that refresher, just not always as much as the book begins with.
What year was this edition published?
User on Feb 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: All three books in our kit have a 2005 copyright.
are there additional materials required for this math program?
A shopper on Dec 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, but you can use less or more resources as you choose. The DIVE dvd's (sold separately from Saxon) are good resources if you want your child to watch a video of a professor teaching the new concepts (about 15 minutes per lesson) but they are not necessary. Using Saxon, in my opinion, can be tailored to the student, if they need repetitive, thorough progress to absorb math concepts, then do every problem at a steady pace. If they get bored easily this way, they need to move through the material more quickly or might benefit from supplemental math study. Saxon's strength is ALL the concepts needed, presented in the order that builds a strong foundation for the next math level. But it can be plodding and slow for the voracious math learner (IMHO)
Is this a paperback edition?
A shopper on Oct 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: All of the pieces in the homeschool kit are softbound. We have found them to be durable. Check out the Saxon Teacher dvds for extra help. They show every problem in the book worked out on a whiteboard. ??

Awesome.
This is a great system. The lessons are well laid out. There are plenty of examples and we can work through the practice problems together. He really enjoys math and the mixed lesson gives him just enough to absorb the lesson. His education has been hindered by his ADD and the special education classrooms were distracting. With COVID, I was his teacher remotely and found it difficult to keep him focused, so we turned to homeschooling. Thank you from a new teaching Mom.
