All three components of the Homeschool Kit come softbound. The Student Edition Text uses a two-color page layout, as opposed to the black and white pages of prior editions. Solutions Manual contains solutions to all problems in the text and tests.

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

My kids are doing wonderfully with Saxon math. It does not seem to be very advanced. My 9 year old, in fourth grade, is doing 5th grade math at his enrichment school. At home he has been working on Saxon 5/4 but it's not challenging him at all. Buying 7/6 for him and he should enjoy it more.

This is our second year using Saxon Math with my two children. I also used Saxon Math when I was homeschooled. It is solid, no-frills math, that has lots of practice of concepts, so you get those concepts. If want to have a good understanding of math, Saxon math is where it is at.

I LOVE Saxon math for my kids. The spiral technique where they come back and review concepts is just logical to me. My kids actually read the lessons and do the work on their own. They occasionally need help but the lessons are enough 90% of the time.

My son was bored in school with Saxon 6/5. He needed more.
Gary on Oct 7, 2021
I have heard about Saxon's excellent reputation for years, even as I chose to use Singapore Math with my boys. The latter is perfect for my middle son, but I feel that my older son could really benefit from the increased practice and repetition of Saxon as well as the slower pace at which Saxon introduces new material. I'm excited about switching my oldest son to Saxon 7/6.

What is included in the kit? I need an extra student text, test & worksheets book
Debra W on Aug 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: What's included is the student text book, tests and worksheets book, and the answer key book. You probably have to order an additional student text book and tests/worksheets book individually or buy two of this kit, but you'll have an extra answer key book.
Will the Saxon 7/6 4th ED worksheets and test book work with the Saxon 7/6 3rd ED Text book?
A shopper on Mar 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: After a fashion. The worksheets are fairly similar to the fact tests in the older edition. The tests are specific to the 4th editon and there might be a few changes in terms of lesson order but you should be able to use the newer edition tests with the older edtion text. Just beware that you may run into an occasional type of problem that hasn't been covered yet.
Is this 4th edition common core aligned?
A shopper on Aug 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: As far as I know, it is not aligned.
Does this edition align with common core?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Why do you want to align with common core? If the goal is to score well on standardized exams, this text will get you there, regardless of it's alignment. Very thorough, spiral in nature, and complete.
I'm looking at ordering your complete kits, but I need a different math level than what they come with. Is there a way to switch them out?
Amber B on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We are not able to make any changes/substitutions in the kits. However, the consultants are happy to work with you to develop a custom curriculum plan based on the kits. (There's no charge for this service.)
If I have 3 children in the same Saxon math level, would they each need their own text or just the text and worksheets?
A shopper on Feb 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The textbook has the lessons/explanations and questions/problems to solve. The worksheets book has the tests, timed/math facts daily tests, and any supplemental worksheets for selected lessons. The "teacher book" has just the solutions.
Balancing out frugality and ease of use, I would get 1 textbook, 1 teacher/solutions book and 3 worksheet books.
What year was this published? Does it have timed tests for every day and mental math?
User on Jan 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The copyright date is 2005. There are timed tests for every lesson. There is an investigation after every ten lessons, and there are tests every five lessons(starting at lesson 10). On investigation days, there is no timed test. But there is on test days. There is a box at the beginning of every lesson with mental math, and a special problem to solve. Then the student reads the lesson, then does the lesson practice problems. Next is the Mixed Practice which is 30 problems from all the lessons before including that days' work.
What year was this published?
A shopper on Jan 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I bought ours last summer June 2015 and the copyright date is 2005.

So far, so good!
We're switching from Singapore to Saxon for middle school (and beyond) for a bit more repetition and practice (we still love Singapore for elementary). Saxon absolutely lives up to the reputation it has for being a gradual program with plenty of review. We don't find we need quite so much but it's easy to hand-pick which problems my student needs to do. I love the opening exercises and facts drill! And my student likes seeing progress in speed too. Solid program!

(We completed Singapore 4A and tested solidly into Saxon 7/6.)

Easier lesson time
We were previously doing a sequential approach with Math. It worked for a time until it didn't and my daughter was starting to get frustrated. The switch to Saxon had been a blessing. It made her grasp the lessons easier without getting overwhelmed. I would recommend this book set for Math.
