Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

I purchased Saxon Math because of other reviews of home schooling parents, who use it within combination with "Nicole the math lady" and had great results.

Tried to switch to Khan Academy this year and it was an epic fail. The clear, written examples in Saxon (which we used last year) and the circling back to concepts were much more effective.

Previous experience with Saxon Math has proven that it is effective. Each lesson builds on the next, and plenty of review built in.

I appreciate the spiral curriculum, the books are very thorough, and the lessons allow for mostly self study (I have three kids at different grade levels, so I need them to be mostly independent).

My MIL homeschooled my husband through middle school, and did not feel equal to the task of teaching him math. They tried a couple of curriculums, and she SWEARS by Saxon. I'm using it now to homeschool my girls while we live abroad in Scotland for a couple of years, and I'm glad to have something reliable to lean on in the otherwise uncharted territory of 'global schooling' that I'm undertaking.

What is included in the kit? I need an extra student text, test & worksheets book
Debra W on Aug 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: What's included is the student text book, tests and worksheets book, and the answer key book. You probably have to order an additional student text book and tests/worksheets book individually or buy two of this kit, but you'll have an extra answer key book.
Will the Saxon 7/6 4th ED worksheets and test book work with the Saxon 7/6 3rd ED Text book?
A shopper on Mar 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: After a fashion. The worksheets are fairly similar to the fact tests in the older edition. The tests are specific to the 4th editon and there might be a few changes in terms of lesson order but you should be able to use the newer edition tests with the older edtion text. Just beware that you may run into an occasional type of problem that hasn't been covered yet.
Is this 4th edition common core aligned?
A shopper on Aug 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: As far as I know, it is not aligned.
Does this edition align with common core?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Why do you want to align with common core? If the goal is to score well on standardized exams, this text will get you there, regardless of it's alignment. Very thorough, spiral in nature, and complete.
I'm looking at ordering your complete kits, but I need a different math level than what they come with. Is there a way to switch them out?
Amber B on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We are not able to make any changes/substitutions in the kits. However, the consultants are happy to work with you to develop a custom curriculum plan based on the kits. (There's no charge for this service.)
If I have 3 children in the same Saxon math level, would they each need their own text or just the text and worksheets?
A shopper on Feb 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The textbook has the lessons/explanations and questions/problems to solve. The worksheets book has the tests, timed/math facts daily tests, and any supplemental worksheets for selected lessons. The "teacher book" has just the solutions.
Balancing out frugality and ease of use, I would get 1 textbook, 1 teacher/solutions book and 3 worksheet books.
What year was this published? Does it have timed tests for every day and mental math?
User on Jan 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The copyright date is 2005. There are timed tests for every lesson. There is an investigation after every ten lessons, and there are tests every five lessons(starting at lesson 10). On investigation days, there is no timed test. But there is on test days. There is a box at the beginning of every lesson with mental math, and a special problem to solve. Then the student reads the lesson, then does the lesson practice problems. Next is the Mixed Practice which is 30 problems from all the lessons before including that days' work.
What year was this published?
A shopper on Jan 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I bought ours last summer June 2015 and the copyright date is 2005.

Good choice for my 6th grade quick learner.
After reading and listening to as many math curriculum reviews as I could find, I decided on Saxon for my 6th grade son. He can go through a lesson each day independently and then I grade it. We’re two weeks in and we’re both happy with it. It seems to be the right level and he’s finally learning how math applies to every day life. The workbook is very well written as far as I can see.

Advice re Saxon Math 7/6 vs. 8/7 vs. Math Mammoth
1. Saxon expert teacher Art Reed said during a phone consult that a student who does well in Saxon Math 7/6 (meaning student gets an 80 or higher on the last five tests) can go directly to Saxon Math 1/2 - no need to do Saxon Math 8/7 if student did well enough in 7/6.

2. My student started with Saxon, switched to Math Mammoth for 4th and 5th Grade, and now wants to return to Saxon because the constant review makes it easier to retain the information. Although we absolutely LOVED Math Mammoth, even with the chapter reviews and cumulative reviews, my student said she was still forgetting how to do many of the earlier math problems - and this is a very strong math student who really "gets" math. This just doesn't happen with Saxon.

3. I have another student who is more anxious about math and the repetition of Saxon has given him a lot of confidence that he can "do" math well. Saxon format also eliminates a lot of testing anxiety because there is nothing on the test that is not already VERY familiar and so test performance is not artificially diminished by performance anxiety.
