Product Description:

Exactly what was needed in the Apologia elementary science scope and sequence the Human Body. We waited awhile for this, but it was worth the wait (as we knew it would be). Continuing their pattern of in-depth studies, exciting information, engaging activities, and biblical worldview, this latest course examines the body systems skeletal, muscular, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, nervous along with nutrition, health, embryology, the immune system, and the major organs. It also provides a brief history of medicine and an introduction to cell structure and DNA. Activities within the fourteen lessons include finding blood type, making a cell model, and building a skeleton. Oh! And be prepared! Your student will be looking for household bacteria. ~ Janice

Publisher Description:

From the brain in your head to the nails on your toes, you and your students will encounter fascinating facts, engaging activities, intriguing experiments, and loads of fun as you learn about the human body and how to keep it working well. Beginning with a brief history of medicine and a peek into cells and DNA, your students will voyage through fourteen lessons covering many subjects, such as the body systems: skeletal, muscular, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, nervous and more! They'll study nutrition and health, how God designed their immune system to protect them, along with embryology and what makes them a unique creation of God. As they work their way through the course, your students will enjoy adding the organs about which they learn to their own personalized human figure to be placed in their course notebook. In addition to all this exploration, your students will enjoy scientific experiments and projects, such as testing the bacteria content around the house, finding their blood type, creating a cell model from Jello and candy, and even building a stethoscope! In keeping with the other books in the Apologia elementary science Young Explorer Series, the Charlotte Mason methodology is employed with engaging narratives, narration prompts and notebooking projects, all of which reinforce their learning using proven techniques that strengthen retention. Covering the body systems: skeletal, muscular, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, nervous and more!

Category Description for Apologia Science (K-6):

This popular elementary science series was originally created when Jeannie Fulbright, author and homeschool mom, was looking for a quality elementary science series that was creation-based using the Charlotte Mason approach. When she didn't find the curriculum she was looking for she decided to create her own. These books use the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology including narration and notebooking to develop critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. The series has since expanded to cover more science topics. New for 2021 is Earth Science, authored by Rachel Yunis, author of Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology.

Since the Charlotte Mason method is employed, every lesson is organized with a narrative, notebook work, an activity, and a project. The student notebook is emphasized in the lessons. Activities and projects bring the lessons to life and use simple household items. While the author's intent is for the parent to read these books to elementary students, a student with a 4th-grade reading level could read these books on their own. The books come from a strong creationist viewpoint, including sections called "Creation Confirmation" and Scripture interwoven throughout the book. Apologia recommends spending an entire year covering each book, taking about two weeks to explore most lessons (some lessons may require more time).

Notebooking Journals were a later - and welcome - addition to the series. As they complete the courses, students were encouraged to compile a notebook to collect and display the information they are learning. The Apologia Notebooking Journals now provide a place for the student to complete every assignment, to record experiments and to display work. Included are weekly lesson plans, templates for recording fascinating facts and assignments, and scripture copywork in both print and cursive models. In addition to full-color Miniature Books (for recording facts and information and pasting directly into the notebook), there are optional ideas (Take it Further in Astronomy; Dig in Deeper in Botany; Fly Higher in Zoology, etc.) for lots of additional activities, projects, experiments, books or videos, all of which correlate with specific lessons in each course. Along these lines, the Personal Person project in both of the Anatomy notebooks is special providing clear vinyl overlays of each body system. Be prepared to cut these out, though.

Junior Notebooking Journals are a simplified version of the orignal Notebooking Journals and require less handwriting but have the same reinforcing activities. These books include coloring pages, project pages, and cut and fold miniature books (same ones as in the version for older students). There is space for notebooking assignments (more drawings, no questions to answer) and scripture copywork (shorter verses to copy either in manuscript or in beginning cursive). Biblical quotations are from the NASB, KJV, NIV or NKJV.

To complete the books all you will need to provide is scissors, glue, colored pencils, a stapler, and a few brass fasteners. There are plenty of activity options in the journals, but keep in mind that based on your student, you may not want to complete every activity. Work can be tailored to each student by simply tearing out unwanted pages from the spiral-bound book. Serving both as a uniquely expressed record of the student's work and as a prized reminder of acquired knowledge, these books will become a homeschooling heirloom.

For convenience, we now offer either Advantage Sets or SuperSets. Advantage Sets include the textbook and either the Junior or original Notebooking Journal. SuperSets include the text, the MP3 Audiobook CD and either the Junior or the original Notebooking Journal.

We also offer lab kits from Nature's Workshop for the elementary courses. Kits contain most of the materials for the experiments, and are conveniently packaged by lesson in the corresponding book (sold separately). There are still a few items you will need from around your house, but with these kits the list becomes extremely short. ~ Janice / Jerry

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

Category Description for COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE PROGRAMS:

Could this be used in 9th grade as a partial credit if a student has done no other human anatomy or physiology courses? If so, what portion of a credit may be awarded?
A shopper on Jul 25, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Generally speaking, using a 6th grade level text for a high school credit of any kind is not acceptable.
How religious is the actual subject matter? When it goes into the actually subject ie skeletal system, is it based on actual science or pure religion?
Linda on Feb 17, 2021
BEST ANSWER: When the body is being discussed, I would say it's all science. For the elementary level, it's pretty detailed with lots of vocabulary like periosteum, rickets, remodeling, collagen, red vs. yellow bone marrow, osteoblasts, cartilage, osteoclasts, short bones, flat bones, sesamoid bones, coccyx, vertebrae, mandible,, pectoral girdle, etc. As I look through the skeletal system chapter, I see numerous references to God's design, such as "...because your skeleton is an amazing creation of God!" or "God designed some of your bones to protect you from harm. (both on p. 38) In the skeleton chapter (2), I see 14 references to God like this. That's a 14 page chapter. There are also "Creation Confirmation" sections, especially in the 1st chapter talking about the history of medical science and an anti-evolution point on p. 24. I used this book for 4-8th graders and they loved the activities and I felt they absorbed a lot of very useful knowledge. I hope this helps you make your decision.
Can you start with any of the Apologia textbooks or is there a particular order? Looking at starting this with a first grader in the fall
SARA on Feb 4, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You can do them in any order, however, the human anatomy textbook is a little more advanced. I would recommend it for 5th and up.
Is there a Lab kit?
Katie T on Apr 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, here it is https://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=050170 . We bought it and find it very helpful. It come in very organize , a bag for each lesson. I love it
How long did it take you to cover this material? A full year? One semester? One chapter per week? Thanks!
Catherine W on Sep 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I did a chapter a week, did not finish book. It is an excellent book because it repeats concepts throughout chapters reinforcing what they learn!
Is there a teacher book and tests to go with this curriculum?
A shopper on Aug 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is the text that you read with your children. (Or you can assign the children to read individually.) There is no need for a teacher book for this curriculum. We read this book together as a family and the children complete the notebooking activities (sold separately) but there are no tests for this curriculum. Also throughout the text, there are questions for the children to orally narrate after each section to check on retention of the material. We love Apologia Exploring Creation Curriculum; this is our third year using it!
I have a rising 3rd grader and a rising 6th grader. Is this suggesting they both use this book?
A shopper on Jul 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The book is the same for either. You can use the Junior Notebook for the 3rd grader and the regular notebook for the 6th grader. I am doing it this year with a 6th, 5th, 3rd and Kindergartener. The junior notebooks have coloring pages and less writing. The regular notebooks have vocabulary crosswords and more writing, but they also share some activities that can be done together.
I see the textbook and a notebooking journal. Are there worksheets for students to fill in charts and answer questions? Quizzes or tests?
A shopper on May 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The notebooking journal has pages for taking notes, completing charts, crossword puzzles, and answering questions. The pages have colorful pictures and are arranged with plenty of room for the student to write. It's a great resource to keep the student notes organized. It also has lots of "mini books" and hands on projects to reinforce concepts. Definitely worth the money.
This book doesn't come with tests or quizzes, but it would be easy to adapt the crossword puzzle or "what do you remember" questions to Jake your own, if you felt that was important.
This is suggested for grades 1-6. Would it be okay for 7th grade? I have heard it is a bit tougher than the other Young Explorers books. I do not think she is quite ready for General Science.
A shopper on May 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I think it will be fine for 7th grade. There is a lot of information in it, and she'll probably understand it even better in 7th grade actually. I would not do this in the earlier elementary grades, as I think it's too hard for them (but if they are a younger sibling, feel free to have them listen along -- this just wouldn't be their main text).

Excellent Science Program
This is an excellent science course. I have used other elementary Apologia Science courses and loved them as well. This is a solid creation based science program. My children enjoy these books, and they are easy to use. They have great activities and experiments that make learning science fun. We use the note booking journal with the textbook.

I wish we could do them all.
All of the Apologia science books for elementary look interesting. I wish we had started sooner because she will not be able to do them all by the time she move into 7th grade. This one is no exception to what we have found with the others in this series. Anatomy and Physiology is thorough, but not boring, full of facts, but written in a style that holds our interest. The activities reinforce review and the creation confirmation section is our favorite part of the chapters. I recommend getting the lab kit.

Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology.
We are loving our study of anatomy and physiology! I love that it talks about our growth in the womb without getting into the specifics of how babies are conceived. With our boys 9 years old, the ins and outs of the reproduction system is more advanced than we are ready to explore. They love learning about how their bodies work and all the inside organs that make them up.
