Product Description:

The Teacher Manual starts with some general how-to-and-why information plus a complete scope and sequence for the course. Daily lesson plans include the same grammar instruction found in the student book plus a wealth of additional information and complete corrective support (i.e. answer keys) for each of the daily sentence edits. "Fixes" are explained and grammatical "talking points" are provided. Helpful sidebar teacher's notes serve as a cross-reference to other lessons as well as interesting historical tidbits such as the name (pilcrow) for the paragraph mark and its origin (Middle Ages) and purpose (to separate content). Appendices with the story, IEW references, and a copy of the Grammar Glossary complete the Teacher Manual.

Publisher Description:

Ingenious! Students hunt for and correct errors in daily passages that cumulatively tell a story. Fix It! Grammar™ is a six-year, incremental program that encourages students to apply new grammar knowledge in every lesson while continuing to practice what they already know.

Level 1 Nose Tree presumes no prior grammar knowledge and introduces basic parts of speech, end-mark punctuation, phrases, clauses, homophones, and more.

Category Description for Fix It! Grammar:

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine a well-loved program getting any better. IEW’s Fix It! Grammar - 4th edition – will change your mind on that. There are some excellent improvements, most notably in the teaching-assignment sequences, but the fun-to-use and user-friendly program is still distinctive in its systematic approach that melds structure-of-language instruction with usage-based practice. Some of the improvements include thorough explanations, lists of errors for each passage, blank lines for copywork, expanded scope and sequence, and seamless transition between levels allowing for mastery plus spiraling.

The six-year course sequence has changed but the grade and IEW writing level designations for each level remain the same.

Level 1 (4-5; SSS-A) is still Nose Tree.
Level 2 (4-5; SSS-A) (formerly Robin Hood) is Town Mouse and Country Mouse.
Level 3 (6-8; SSS-B) (formerly Frog Prince) is Robin Hood.
Level 4 (6-8; SSS-B) (formerly Little Mermaid) is Mowgli and Shere Khan.
Level 5 (8-12; SSS-C) (formerly Chanticleer) is Frog Prince.
Level 6 (8-12; SSS-C) (formerly Sir Gawain) is Little Mermaid.

Obviously, if you’ve been using this program, you may be concerned about a next grade level course with the same title as last year. IEW assures us that “the stories themselves have been rewritten and the teaching content has been expanded. Therefore, there should be no concern if a student repeats a story from third edition while working through the new fourth edition Fix It! Grammar series.” While designed as a six-year, start-to-finish program, according to IEW, Frog Prince (Level 5) and Little Mermaid (Level 6) are useful for high school students who need a refresher course or who are preparing for standardized tests.

There are 30 weekly lessons in each course. Each of these begin with one day of expanded and targeted instruction coupled with examples. Daily assignments for the remaining four days follow. These daily lessons are based on passages from the course story. A guide at the top of each lesson page lists the assignment’s tasks. Each lesson has four distinct tasks:

Read It! - read passage and look up vocabulary word.
Mark It! - mark the passage using the guide.
Fix-It! - correct the passage using the guide.
Rewrite It! - copy the corrected passage.

Grammar lessons should take only 15 minutes per day, require teacher-student interaction one day per week, and allow the student to work somewhat independently the remaining days. This path to mastery suggests review cards for key grammar concepts as well as a grammar glossary for reference. In other words, the student is being equipped and trained to incorporate excellent grammar into their writing as well as being prepared to edit their own work.

Each course is comprised of a teacher's manual plus a student book. The general methodology is straight-forward. Read/discuss instructional material, edit one sentence daily, and then rewrite the passage correctly. Defining the vocabulary words that are identified in each sentence is an added bonus.

The Student Book provides both the weekly lessons and the space to complete them. Weekly lessons devoted to review (no new material) are peppered throughout the course but predominate in the last half. Appendices in the spiral-bound student book provide the complete story (a compilation of the daily sentences), various IEW resource pages, and a Grammar Glossary that serves as a reference tool.

The Teacher/Student Combo packages provide both a Teacher Manual and a Student book.

In case it's not clear, the goal of these courses is FUN - along with learning and remembering good grammar, of course. They provide a light touch that is embedded in practicality. Obviously designed to complement the IEW writing courses, they are integrated with IEW terms such as dress-ups, acronyms (FANBOYS), and clause starters (www.asia.b). The Fix It! materials can be done as a stand-alone program. I've been a lukewarm fan of editing approaches to grammar, but this one is also strong in providing systematic, structural coverage of grammar. This combination of instruction and practical application is highly effective. TMs - 225 - 250 pgs. spiral-bound; SBs - 120 pgs spiral-bound ~ Janice

We've tried several grammar programs, and all have come up short. Thorough, yes, but tear-producing for this mom who never had any formal grammar instruction and her sentence-diagramming adverse kids. We're going to give this one a try. Hoping the different approach will work for us.

I've heard great things about IEW but am not ready to jump into the full-blown expensive writing series yet. I also liked that it required less teacher involvement. I thought the story-based lessons would be interesting to students.

I have heard from numerous homeschool moms that this is a great way to teach kids about grammar. Being a first time homeschool family, I liked the one sentence a day approach and for children to not just learn the grammar, but to apply it and learn about it through that given sentence each day.

Hoping this manual will teach me how to teach my son to look at things critically and absorb the convoluted and not-much-fun rules of grammar. I detested grammar growing up, so I have high hopes that it will be less odious to my son with the guidance of these clever folks!

Any recommendations on a good usage supplement to round out/compliment this curriculum? Thank you!
Noelia on Mar 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You won't need a supplement. This curriculum builds so nicely in small increments. My kids have loved this program. This is our 3rd year using it and we go through about 2 books in 1 year. And we do math and LA year-around.
Is this a hard copy or a pdf file??
User on Oct 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's a hard copy. The student manual can be bought hard copy as well (see link below) or downloaded in PDF form from a code in the front of this manual. This teacher's manual is hard copy.

Any thoughts on using this with a variety of ages? I'm considering it for my 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders - but worry it would be too hard for the 3rd grader, too easy for the 7th grader. Are there any modifications for different ages?

Fix It! Grammar: Level 1 Nose Tree Student Book
BEST ANSWER: I think it would work with the 3rd and 5th grader. I am planning on using it with my 3rd and 4th grader this coming year. I would suggest starting your 7th grader with it but going through it faster. I did this with my 7th and 10th grader doing 2 days per day. If you did this your 7th grader could get through books 1 and 2 in one school year.
Does this have the download of the student book?
A shopper on May 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. Directions and a link to download the student book are included in the Teachers's Manual.
Do you need the teacher book to go along with the student book?
A shopper on Sep 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would highly recommend it even if you are an English major. They explain why some of the words are not marked, give you more tips, answers, reasons why some words are marked and the vocabulary answer and an advanced student more to do.
We love Fit It! Grammar. I cannot recommend it enough. My 5th grade son, who doesn't really like to write, loves it, and says that verbs, nouns, ect are easy to understand. You can really do it in 15 minutes 4 times a week. Hope this answer helps!

Just starting
We are just starting out with grammar and just getting into the book (so that is why I am only giving it 4 stars so far). But this looks like a great way to teach grammar--step by step, little by little so that it is not overwhelming the student with new big terms. I like that there is one sentence a day to practice the new lesson, and then there are 4 days of practicing it before learning something new.

Very impressive
We are really enjoying the ease of this program and that it doesn’t take too much time to complete each day. My daughter is learning lots of important aspects of sentence structure and copy work. Editing is such an important skill and I’m glad she is enjoying it.

Overall good
Overall it is pretty good. I would have loved to see a bit more background knowledge to the grammar - currently it gives about 1-2 sentences on the "additional information" on each sentence -
I do love the concept of this style of learning grammar hands on - and my son looks forward to doing his sentences daily. He is eager to read the story start to finish.

Excellent!!!
Both my boys, ages 9 & 13 think it's like a treasure hunt to find the mistakes and mark noun, verb, etc. They don't even think of it as copy work! It's broken down into one sentence a day, which is perfect for my boys. They are learning so much with just doing a little bit every day. Great quality product for doing vocabulary, grammar, spelling all in one! Love it!

Best grammar program!
We have tried several popular grammar programs over the years. Most had two faults. First, they were painful for my daughter to execute. She hated grammar. Second, they didn't seem to stick. Fix It Grammar is a joy for our family. Both of my girls reach for it first among their subjects! They are also not only learning grammar but discussing the in's and out's of it on their own. I also love the copy work component. We will be using Fix It Grammar in the years to come!

I am a big fan of children learning grammar and writing early so that as they get older it is easier to focus on specific writing tasks Last year I used "Daily Grams" and "First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind" with my 2nd grader I really liked both curriculum but my son disliked the Daily Grammar and he was less than thrilled about the First Language Lessons I decided to look for something that might be more appealing to him this year (And less of a fight to get him to do it!) When I stumbled upon "Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree " I decided to try it and my son LOVES it! He is a 3rd grader this yearHOW IT WORKS: "The Nose Tree" story is broken down into 1 sentence per day 4 days per week There is always a vocabulary word in the sentence that is bolded The first thing the child does is look the vocabulary word up in the dictionary determine the correct meaning based on the context and write the word and meaning down Then the child finds different parts of speech and grammar in the sentence and labels them This is pretty painless since there are grammar cards that come with the curriculum that I hand him to use He goes through the grammar cards and labels each in the sentence The program starts very simple and the first week you discuss nouns with the child and he/she looks for nouns and puts a n above the nouns The second week adds articles The third week adds pronouns etc Also introduced are paragraph symbols homophones (their there they're) punctuation quotations etc Finally the child copies a final draft of the sentence on an on-going sheet of paper By the time the program is done he/she will have hand-written the whole storyWHAT WE LIKE:My son loves the story He enjoys that each day builds the story and he likes to see what is going to happen next I love that he is learning parts of speech IN CONTEXT I think he will retain the information better I love that he is learning grammar and editing in a very painless way It's also great copy work My son writes a lot neater for this than he does for anything elseTHINGS TO KNOW:It is a fabulous curriculum! There are other books in the Fix It! Grammar series that we will be getting after this one This one is for grades 3-5 and it is recommended that children start with this one and do the others sequentially as the concepts build on each otherIt is very easy to use and requires no prep for me I often have my son do it himself and then just review to make sure he got everything correct The teacher book makes it simple to make sure everything is labeled correctlyAnother thing of note I bought both the teacher book and the student book However all you need is the teacher book and a printer since you can print off the student pages
